  • Direct Instantaneous Pressure Control(DIPC) method of SRM using pressure predict method is presented in this paper. A hydraulic pump system has an inherent defect that its dynamic behavior causes by interaction between the sensor and hydraulic load. It will make sometimes the whole system become oscillatory and unstable. Proposed system integrates direct instantaneous torque control (DITC) and Smith predictor to improve dynamic performance and stabilization. The proposed hydraulic oil pump system is verified by computer simulation and experimental results.

  • Plants with long time-delays can not be often controlled effectively using a simple PID controller. The main reason for this is that the additional phase lag contributed by the time-delay tends to destabilize the closed-loop system. The stability problem can be solved by smith predictor. However, in this case responses are very sensitive to the estimated model errors. To reduce sensitive problem, this paper is presented based on virtual reference feedback tuning of the time delay plant using the closed-loop test to find parameters for a PID controller using the closed-loop test data.

  • When the teleoperated system has a signal transmission time delay between slave and control system , the system stability as well as the position tracking and the force reflecting performances are likely to be deteriorated. This paper proposed a bilateral control scheme and a controller design method for the teleoperated control systems with a signal transmission time delay.   • Uncertain time delay happens when the process reads the sensor data and sends the control input to the plant located at a remote site in distributed control system. As in the case of data network using TCP/IP, VDN that integrates both device network and data network has uncertain tim e delay. Uncertain time delay can cause degradation in stability of distributed control system based on VDN. This paper investigates the transmission characteristic of VDN and suggests a control scheme based on the Smith's predictor to minimize the effect of uncertain time delay. The validity of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated with tracking position control of experiments.

  • A new air knife system for coating thickness control in hot dip galvanizing process had been developed and installed on the CGL in Pohang Steel Works, POSCO. This new system consists of air knives with remotely adjustable nozzle slot and an automatic control system which can control both longitudinal and traverse coating deviations. Based on the optimal control algorithm, a traverse coating deviation control was designed. The controller controls the lip profile of the air knives with flexible structure according to the deviation of coating weight. From the measured values which are dependent on the strip width, the lip gaps are calculated with optimal algorithm and the model of the coating deviation. Time delay between knives and a coating thickness gauge is solved by the Smith Predictor.

  • A pilot plant, which is simplified the hot water heating control system of a large scale residential building, is used to investigate the effects of control methods and operating conditions on the system performance and to compare control characteristics. Digital variable structure controller(DVSC) and digital PI controller are implemented to control the speed of the circulating pump for the pilot plant using PC. For the DVSC, a control algorithm is suggested, which using a nonlinear sliding surface and a PID sliding surface outside and inside of output error boundary layer, respectively. Smith predictor algorithm is used for the compensation of long dead time. The suggested DVSC yields improved control performance compared with existing DVSC using linear sliding surface only. the system responses with the suggested DVSC shows good responses without overshoot for various operating conditions and robust under external disturbances compared with digital PI controller.

  • A variable structure control scheme(VSCS) with sliding mode that can be applied to the process with input/output(I/O) delay is proposed and its control performances is evaluated. The proposed VSCS with and output feedback scheme comprises a variable structure controller, a servo dynamic for tracking the set-poing, and a Smith predictor for compensating the effects of time delay. The robustness against the parameter variations and external disturbances can be achieved by the proposed VSCS even when the controlled process includes I/O delay. And the desired transient response is obtained by simple adjustment of the coefficients of the switching surface equation.

  • This work presents an advanced and systematic approach to analytically design the optimal parameters of a two parameter second-order internal model control (IMC) filter that satisfies operational constraints on the output process, the manipulated variable as well as rate of change of the manipulated variable, for a first-order plus dead time (FOPDT) process. The IMC parameters are designed to minimize a control objective function composed of the weighted sum of the error between the process variable and the set point, and the rate of change of the manipulated variable, and to satisfy the desired constraints. The feasible region of the constrained IMC control parameters was graphically analyzed, as the process parameters and the constraints varied. The resulting constrained IMC control parameters were also used to find the corresponding industrial proportional-integral controller parameters of a Smith predictor structure.

  • In this paper a design of neuro-fuzzy-based predictive controller for nonlinear systems with time-delay is proposed. The proposed control system contains two neuro-fuzzy systems called ANFIS(Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System). One is run as a series-parallel mode and the other is run as a parallel mode. An ANFIS running in series-parallel mode emulates the response of the nonlinear system with time-delay. Another ANFIS running in parallel mode generates the predicted output of the nonlinear system to compensate for the time-delays. Therefore, the proposed control system can be thought of as an extension of Smith-predictor scheme to the nonlinear systems with time-delay. A detailed design Procedure is presented and finally computer simulations are executed for the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

  • We consider the robust control problem for non-minimum phase(NMP) systems with parametric uncertainty. First, a new method that translates such an uncertain NMP system into a interval family of minimum phase(MP) transfer functions followed a time delay term in the form of Pade' approximation is presented. The controller to be proposed consists of a compensator with Smith predictor structure, so that it can compensate the time delay behaviour due to NMP plant. Therein, the main feedback controller for a family of MP plants has been designed by using quantitative feedback theory(QFT) such that satisfies the robust stability against the structured uncertainty. The stability and performance of overall system are examined through an illustrative example.
