Geochemical composition and clay minerals of surface and core sediments around off the Jeju Island were analyzed for identification of sediment origins. The clay mineral distribution is mainly controlled by the sediment source and the dominant circulation pattern. Smectite is highly concentrated (>8%) in the northwest near the South Yellow Sea and in the outer-shelf mud patch. It seems to be due to the high supply of smectite transported from China where fine-grained sediments are discharged from modern and ancient Huanghe River. The relatively high abundance of kaolinite are found in northeastern nearshore area and the southwest near Changjiang estuary. It seems to be supplied from Changjiang River and the southwestern Korea rivers. The sediment accumulation rates measured by $^{210}Pb$ geochronrom mowere 0.20 to 0.54cm/mr or 0.15 to $0.42g/cm^2{\cdot}mr^{-1}$ AOJI, with decreasing rates from the west part to the east part, resulting in the supply of fine-grained suspended sediments from the Changjiang and Huanghe Rivers system. The discrimination diagrams clearly show that the sediments around Jeju Island in the northern East China Sea are ultimately sourced from Chinese rivers, especially from the Huanghe River, whereas the sediment in the northeast part might come from Korean rivers and the Jeju Island.
XRD patterns of biedellite-nontronite and saponite-iron saponite series were investigated using one-dimensional pattern simulation method. Ethylene-glycolate smectites show stronger 002 and 003 reflections than hydrated specimens do. The intensities of the 002 and 003 reflections change systematically as a function of Fe enrichment in both types of smectites. The intensity ratio of 002/003 increases with increasing. Fe in both dioctahedral to the higher scattering factor of Fe than those of Al and Mg, and the scattering power of various smectites can be compared quantitatively by calculating the scattering factors of octahedral cations. Interlayer cations cause less effect on XRD profile than octahedral cations as Fe do. Although 001 reflections provide informations about the overall scattering power of the octahedral sheet, some ferrous dioctahedtal smectite cannot be distinguished unambiguously from trioctahedral smectites on the basis of XRD profile. Simulation showed that heterogeneous smectites exhibit 001 intensity distribution that is almost identical to that of homogeneous smectites having the average composition of heterogeneous ones. The broadening of 001 reflections may not be useful in evaluating the degree of heterogeneity of smectite unless other factors affecting the broadening are well known.
In the Heunghae area, genetic relationships among sedimentary facies, lithology, stratigraphy and diagenetic mineral facies of the Yeonil Group, are discussed. Conglomerate and sandstone of lower to middle parts of the Yeonil Group contain considerable amounts of volcaniclastic sediments, which were derived from the Tertiary volcanics exposed in the western margins of the sedimentary basin. A new stratigraphic division of the Yeonil Group into the Chunbuk and Pohang Formations is proposed on the basis of sedimentary facies, lithologic characteristics including volcaniclastic feature, and the presence of a key bed of siliceous mudstone overlying the Chunbuk Formation. Diagenetic mineral facies largely depend on the lithology and composition of sediments. Heulandite, smectite, calcite, and opal-CT are commonly found as diagenetic minerals in the Yeonil Group. Among these authigenic minerals, heulandite occurs as the coarse- grained main cement in conglomerates and sandstones of the Chunbuk Formation. Formation of the zeolite cement is favored by partial volcaniclastic lithology of the Chunbuk Formation. Smectite composition and diagenetic mineral facies such as heulandite and opal-CT may reflect that the Yeoil Group has undergone a shallow rial temperature ranging $40{\~}60^{\circ}C$.
For the propose of increasing the value added, zeolite powder was granulated by adding Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) as cementing material. The optimal concentration of PVA for granulation and the physical properties of the prepared granule were investigated. Four percent PVA stock solution was made by adding distilled water at $90^{\circ}C$ water bath and incorporated with zeolite. The contents of water stable granule above 2.0mm in diameter was 98.0% in the case of 0.3% PVA addition and almost 100% in the case of 0.6% PVA addition. Increasing PVA concentration of granules increased the hardness and decreased the infiltration rate and the maximum water holding capacity of granules, However, the drying method hardly affected the physical properties of granules. With the increase in the mixing ratios of kaolinite or bentonite to zeolite, the hardness of granules increased but high water contents of granules resulted in rapid decrease in the hardness of granules. However, when smectite or perlite was mixed with zeolite, the increase in mixing ratios to zeolite resulted in the decrease in hardness, the increase in the infilteration rate and maximum water holding capacity of granules.
This research investigated classification of clay activity degree by different clay mineral components. Based on compositions of different clay and oxide minerals within 390 soil series in Korea, 7 soils were selected to analyze for CEC and specific surface area of clay minerals. As a result, soils were mainly composed with Chlorite originated from sandstone, Smectite originated from Andesite porphyry and combination of Allophane and Ferrihydrite originated from volcanic ash, if the ratio of CEC value to clay content (degree of clay activity) was greater than 0.7. If the degree of clay activity was ranged between 0.3 and 0.7, soils were composed mainly with Kaolin originated from anorthite. Soils with this ratio also was composted with combinations of Kaolin, Illite and Vermiculite originated with river deposits. When the degree of the activity was less than 0.3, soils were commonly red-yellowish color and composed with two different minerals. One type of composition was Kaolin originated from granite and granite gneiss and the soils contained Geothite and Hematite. The other type was composited mainly with Illite and Vermiculite minerals originated from granite. These soils contained Gibbsite, Geothite and Hematite. The degree of clay activity was highly related with CEC and specific surface area. The greater degree of the activity displayed greater values of clay CEC and specific surface area. It is not easy to measure actual quantity and compositions of clay minerals, while the degree of clay activity can be measured from routine soil analyses. As a conclusion, the degree of clay activity may be not just a simple but also powerful tool to estimate physical-chemical properties of soils and to evaluate the soil classification in Korean soils.
East China Sea (ECS) is known to be supplied with large amounts of sediments form Huanghe, Changjiang and various rivers in Korea. Many studies have been conducted to identify the effects of rivers and deposition process of ECS, but no consensus has been reached. In this study, clay minerals, rare earth elements (REEs) and grain size were analyzed to study the provenance and sedimentation environment of core 99MAP-P63 in ECS. Clay mineral contents of 99MAP-P63 are abundant in order of illite, chlorite, kaolinite, and smectite. The provenance of 99MAP-P63 sediments using clay minerals is interpreted as the Changjiang regardless of depth. As a result of REEs analysis, 99MAP-P63 sediments are very similar to Chinese rivers sediments. Therefore, the provenance of 99MAP-P63 is Changjiang, and the influence of Korean river seems to be insignificant. 99MAP-P63 sediments are generally classified as sandy silt, but the top of the core is divided into sand with a sand contents of 85 %. Compared with surrounding cores, sandy silt sediments arecorresponded to the low stand stage when sea-level was low, and the sediments were thought to have been supplied directly through the paleo-Changjiang. Sandy sediments in uppermost of core are corresponded to transgressive stage. Although distance from estuary was increased due to sea-level rise, it was possible to supply coarse sediments due to high bottom stress, and the paleo-Changjiang sediments deposited in study area were re-deposited.
This study analyzed heavy metal concentration, mineral composition, and spectral characteristics of heavy metal contaminated soil samples of cropland and rice field located in downstream of abandoned Okdong coal mine. X-ray fluorescence analysis detected heavy metal elements including cadmium, copper, arsenic, lead, zinc and nickel in the soils. Both cropland and rice field samples were severely contaminated with arsenic showing higher concentration over the concerned standard. The pollution index of cropland samples was higher than that of rice field samples. X-ray powder diffraction analysis identified that the mineral composition of cropland and rice field samples is similar with quartz, calcite, kaolinite, illite, smectite, magnetite and hematite. The range of organic matter content were more widely distributed in cropland samples. The spectral analysis showed that the reflectance spectra and the absorption features of cropland and rice field samples were alike. The absorption features that appeared near 490nm and 900nm were attributed to the ferric iron, and clay minerals such as kaolinite and smectite caused the absorption features at 1410nm, 1910nm and 2200nm. The reflectance of the soil spectral decreased with an increase in organic content. The absorption depths of both types of soil samples decreased with higher organic matter content at 490nm and 1916nm as well as higher heavy metal concentration.
For effective preservation of the rocks, which bearing plant fossils at Gumkwangdong Formation, Pohang, the properties of rock and treatment of chemicals were examined in an artificial weathering test. The rocks are diatomaceous siliceous mudstone, which contain a small amount of smectite and has developed laminated layers. The rocks react with water, the d001 spacing of smectite was increased. On the one hand, the physical properties of the rock samples, such as surface hardness, improved after the application of ethyl silicate-based stone strengthener. On the other hand, the spacing of interlayer of swelling clay minerals decreased and spacing of laminae layer increased. When the ethyl silicate-based stone strengthener was applied after pretreatment with a swelling inhibitor, interlayer and spacing of laminae changes were similar to those when only the stone strengthener was treated. The effect of the swelling inhibitor was almost negligible. When the rocks that have been conserved with chemicals react with water, spacing of laminae has widened much, whereas when the rocks was in contact with moisture only, there was little change. In addition, if it is placed in the outdoor after conservation treatment, although it occurs slightly slower than the untreated rock, the separation of the lamination layer and the pulverization of the rock occur within a very short time. Consolidation is required to improve the physical properties of fossil rock, but when exposed to rain and undergoing freeze-thaw process, the effect is lost very quickly. Therefore, regardless of the chemical treatment, it is a priority to prevent direct rainfall contact with the rock.
Cobalt can be released into the natural environment as industrial waste from the alloying industry and as acid mine drainage, and it is also a radionuclide (60Co) that constitutes high-level radioactive waste. Smectite is a mineral that can be useful for adsorption and isolation of this element. In this study, Cheto-type montmorillonite (Cheto-MM), which is the source clays of The Clay Mineral Society (CMS) and already well-characterized, was used. The effect of the adsorption site affected by the presence of interlayer water on the adsorption of cobalt before and after dehydration by heating was evaluated and the adsorption mechanism of cobalt on Cheto-MM was studied by applying adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm models. The results showed that the adsorption characteristics changed with dehydration and subsequent shrinkage, and cobalt was found to be adsorbed at the edge of Cheto-MM for about 38% and adsorbed at the interlayer site for about 62%, suggesting that the cobalt adsorption of Cheto-MM is significantly influenced by the interlayer. By applying the adsorption kinetic models, the cobalt adsorption kinetics of Cheto-MM is explained by a pseudo-second-order model, and the concentration-dependent adsorption was best described by the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. This study provides basic knowledge on the adsorption characteristic of cobalt on montmorillonite with different adsorption sites and is expected to be useful in predicting the adsorption behavior of smectite in high-level radioactive waste disposal sites in the future.
The landslide occurred in the Nongong area of Dalseong - gun, Kyeongbuk, is described and analysed in terms of structural geology and clay mineralogy to understand the causes of the landslide. The result of the analyses shows that the slip direction and the scale of the landslide of the study area were controlled by the attitude of the major discontinuity planes m the area such as joints, faults and dikes. In addition, the surface of the slip planes of the landslide is composed of clay minerals, which are mostly tri - octahedral vermiculite and smectite. From this study it can be concluded that the presence of expandable clay minerals within the bedding joints and fracture zones in bed rock played an important role in causing the landslide of the study area.
