  • Smartphone enables diverse applications to be used in mobile environments. In spite of the high performance of smartphones, battery life has become one of the major constraints in mobility. Therefore, power efficiency of the smartphone is one of the most important factors in determining the efficiency of the smartphone. In this paper, in order to analyze the power efficiency of the smartphone, we have various experiments according to several configuration parameters such as processor, display and OS. We also use diverse applications. As a result, power consumption is dependent on the processor complexity and display size. However, power consumption shows the unpredictable pattern according to the OS. Smartphone using android OS consumes high power when internet and image processing applications are executed, but It consumes low power when music and camera applications are executed. In contrary, smartphone based on iOS consumes high power when game and internet applications are executed but it consumes low power when camera and processing applications are executed. In general, smartphone using iOS is more power efficient than smartphone based on android OS, because smartphone using iOS is optimized in the perspective of the hardware and OS.

  • As the market share of smartphone exponentially increases in mobile market, a number of manufacturers have developed their own operating system. Firefox OS is an open source operating system for the smartphone and tablet which is being developed by the Mozilla Foundation. This OS is designed using JavaScript and operated based on HTML5. Even though the number of manufacturers which release the Firefox OS smartphone is consistently increasing, However it is difficult to analyze artifacts in a smartphone in terms of investigation since existing researches on Firefox OS focused on imaging velocity according to abstract forensic process and block size. In this paper, we propose how to collect data in Firefox OS while minimizing data loss and forensic analysis framework based on analysis results on system and user data leaving in a smartphone.

  • Objective: This study aims to draw an efficient UI design by comparing the usability of App drawer and single-layered home screens, which are smartphone home screens. Background: Because smartphone home screen is frequently used including the installation, deletion, and editing of APPs, it should be designed with easily controllable information structure. There is a need to seek a user-friendly UI by comparing the usability of App drawer and single-layered home screens, of which methods to search Apps are different. There is also a need to examine an efficient UI and the factors to improve from the user perspective. Method: This study targeted 30 Android OS and iOS users to evaluate the App drawer and single-layered home screens, of which UI structures are different. Each participant was instructed to carry out an App searching task and App deleting task, and the execution time and the number of errors were measured. After the tasks were completed, they evaluated satisfaction through a questionnaire survey. Results: In the App searching task with low task level, there was no difference in execution level between the App drawer and single-layered home screens. However, the single-layered home screen showed higher efficiency and accuracy in the App deleting task with high task level. As for the group difference according to use experience, there was no difference in satisfaction among Android OS users, but iOS user satisfaction with single-layered home screen with which they were familiar was higher. Conclusion: As for home screen usability, the single-layered home screen UI structure can be advantageous, as task level is higher. Repulsion was higher, when users, who had used easier UI, used complex UI in comparison with user satisfaction, when users familiar with complex UI used easier UI. A UI indicating the current status with clear label marking through a task flow chart-based analysis, and a UI in which a user can immediately recognize by exposing hidden functions to the first depth were revealed as things to improve. Application: The results of this study are expected to be used as reference data in designing smartphone home screens. Especially, when iOS users use Android OS, the results are presumed to contribute to the reduction of predicted barriers.

  • This paper examines the diffusion of smartphones with a special emphasis on the diffusive interactions between Apple iOS and Google Android in a global context. Since the two mobile platforms were first introduced in the market, the use of smartphones has skyrocketed, suggesting that the dramatic diffusion of smartphones may be explained in part by the growth and competition of these two platforms. To study this, an extended Bass model is applied to a data set of quarterly smartphone sales between 2008 and 2013 for 15 countries. Our findings suggest that the innovation effect was more salient for iOS than for Android in developed countries, whereas the imitation effect was more striking for Android than for iOS in developing countries. Furthermore, our results from the co-diffusion model suggest that the diffusion of Android negatively affected by the diffusion of iOS, but not vice versa.

  • The purpose of this research is to present the major factors which determine dominant design of Smartphone OS and to verify a logical causal relationship with them and user satisfaction. To achieve this goal, OS compatibility, OS enhancement, Installed base, and network effect were presented as determinants of Smartphone OS which serves as the basis for determining dominant design and their logical causal relationship with user satisfaction was empirically analyzed. The results of the research showed that OS compatibility and OS enhancements had a positive effect on the expansion of user base. Of the two factors, OS enhancement showed that it does not only expand the user base but also acts as the cause for the fortification of the network effect. Furthermore, it was shown that OS enhancement had a direct positive effect on user satisfaction. The findings of this research are significant in its academic contribution as well as its potential for practical application by presenting the logical causal relationship in the process of determining OS dominant design an area which was previously untouched by empirical testing.

  • This study aims to explore and analyze smartphone users' characteristics from the two perspectives (purchase vs. use characteristics) on the two operating systems (iOS and Android). The results of the study on purchase characteristics show that smartphones choice priority and the gender ratio are found to be significantly different between the two operating system users. However, the replacement cycle is not statistically different from iOS and Android users. The results of study on use characteristics show that the number of the applications and the registered SNS(social network service), the average monthly smartphone bill, and satisfaction are significantly different between iOS and Android users. However, the average Internet usage time is not different between the two operating system users. The findings provide useful implications for operating developers, smartphone manufacturers, and application developers.

  • The smartphone operates the media server daemon to handle audio service requests. Media server daemons, running with a high privilege in the background, caused many vulnerabilities to applications most frequently used in smart devices including smartphones. Fuzzing is a popularly used methodology to find software vulnerabilities. Unfortunately, fuzzing itself is not much effective in such format-strict environments as media services. In this paper, we propose a file format-aware fuzzing in order to efficiently detect vulnerabilities of media server daemon. We acquired a remote arbitrary code execution vulnerability on iOS/tvOS/MacOS/watchOS, and we verified the effectiveness by comparing our methodology with the fuzzers FileFuzz and ZZUF.
