This research is concerned with the active vibration control of slewing smart structures subjected to rotating disturbance. When cantilever beam rotates about axes perpendicular to the undeformed beam's longitudinal axis, it experiences inertial loading. Hence, the beam vibrates after the slewing ends. In this paper, the analytical model for a single slewing flexible beam with surface bonded piezoelectric sensor and actuator is developed using the Hamilton's principle with discretization by the assumed mode method. The theoretial model is verified by the experimental open loop frequency response data. The controller is designed for residual vibration suppression after slewing. The designed cotroller is a positive position feedback (PPF) controller for controlling the first mode vibration.

There has been a recent surge of research interest on the smart structure. This paper presents active vibration control scheme of multi-mode forced vibration using piezoceramic sensors/actuators. The control scheme adopted is the Positive Position Feedback control. Among various vibration control techniques, PPF control technique makes use of generalized displacement measurements to accomplish vibration suppression. Two independent controllers are implemented to control the first and the second modes of the beam under external excitation. Experimental results for various damping ratio and feedback gains of the PPF controllers are compared with respect to the control efficiency. The results indicate that steady state vibration under wideband excitation can be controlled effectively when multiple sets of PZT sensors/actuators were used with PPF control technique.
This is a review paper on mathematical modeling of actively controlled piezo smart structures. Paper has four sections to discuss the techniques to: (i) write the equations of motion (ii) implement sensor-actuator design (iii) model real life environmental effects and, (iv) control structural vibrations. In section (i), methods of writing equations of motion using equilibrium relations, Hamilton's principle, finite element technique and modal testing are discussed. In section (ii), self-sensing actuators, extension-bending actuators, shear actuators and modal sensors/actuators are discussed. In section (iii), modeling of thermal, hygro and other non-linear effects is discussed. Finally in section (iv), various vibration control techniques and useful software are mentioned. This review has two objectives: (i) practicing engineers can pick the most suitable philosophy for their end application and, (ii) researchers can come to know how the field has evolved, how it can be extended to real life structures and what the potential gaps in the literature are.
This paper deals with an experimental investigation on an active vibration control of ahybrid smart structure(HSS) via an electro-rheological fluid actuator(ERFA) and a piezoelectric film actuator(PFA). Firstly, an HSS is constructed by inserting a silicone oil-based electro-rheological fluid into a hollow can- tilevered beam and perfectly bonding piezoelectric films ofn the upper and lower surfaces of the beam as an actuator and a sensor, respectively. The control scheme of the ERFA tuning stiffness and damping charac- teristics of the HSS with imposed electric fields is formulated as a function of excitation frequencies on the basis of field-dependent respnses. On the other hand, as for the control scheme of the PFA permitting control voltages to generate axial forces or bending moments for suppressing deflections of the HSS, a neuro sliding mode controller(NSC) is employed. Furthermore, an experimental implementation activating the ERFA and the PFA independently is established to carry out an active vibration control in both the transient and forced vibrations. The experimental results exhibit a superior ability of the gtbrid actuation system to tailor elastodynamic response characteristics of the HSS rather than a single class of actuator system alone.
ANC technic can overcome the limited performance of passive noise control at the low frequency range. But it has the local quiet control region in general. In this paper, it is discussed that the global noise control in a circular duct using a ring type smart foam and a porous material. LMS algorithm and RLS algorithm are used to find optimal orders of cancellation path. Experiments are performed to compare the efficiency of RLS algorithm with that of LMS algorithm.
This paper presents a robust vibration control methodology for smart structural systems. The governing equation and associated boundary conditions of the smart structural system are derived by using Hamilton's principle. The assumed mode method is used to discretize the governing equation into a set of ordinary differential equation. A robust controller is designed using a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach for the multiobjective synthesis. The design objectives are to achieve a mix of H$_{\infty}$ performance and H$_2$ performance satisfying constraints on the closed-loop pole locations in the presence of model uncertainties. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of LMI approach in damping out the multiple vibration modes of the piezo/beam system.
This paper is concerned with the trajectory tracking and vibration suppression of a single-link flexible arm by using piezoelectric materials. The dynamics of a single flexible arm with PZT patches as sensor and actuator is derived using extended Hamilton's principle. Resulting equations show that the coupled beam dynamics including beam vibration and its rigid in-plane rotation takes place in two different time scales. By using singular perturbation theory, the system dynamics is divided into two subsystems. Then, a composite control scheme is elaborated that makes the orientation of the arm track a desired trajectory while suppressing its vibration. The proposed controller has two parts: one is a tracking controller designed for the slow (rigid) subsystem, and the other one is a stabilizing controller for the fast (flexible) subsystem. The outputs considered for the system are angular position of the hub and voltage of the sensor mounted on the structure. To avoid requiring further measurements of beam vibration and also angular velocity of the hub for the fast and slow control laws, respectively, two sliding mode observers for estimating the unknown states are also designed.
The non-linear behaviour of electrorheological (ER) and magnetorheological (MR) dampers makes it difficult to design effective control strategies, and as a consequence a wide range of control systems have been proposed in the literature. These previous studies have not always compared the performance to equivalent passive systems, alternative control designs, or idealised active systems. As a result it is often impossible to compare the performance of different smart damper control strategies. This article provides some insight into the relative performance of two MR damper control strategies: on/off control and feedback linearisation. The performance of both strategies is benchmarked against ideal passive, semi-active and fully active damping. The study relies upon a previously developed model of an MR damper, which in this work is validated experimentally under closed-loop conditions with a broadband mechanical excitation. Two vibration isolation case studies are investigated: a single-degree-of-freedom mass-isolator, and a two-degree-of-freedom system that represents a vehicle suspension system. In both cases, a variety of broadband mechanical excitations are used and the results analysed in the frequency domain. It is shown that although on/off control is more straightforward to implement, its performance is worse than the feedback linearisation strategy, and can be extremely sensitive to the excitation conditions.
The machining-chatter stands for a sudden relative vibration appeared between a material and a tool while processing with a machine. This chatter is key factor that seriously affects the quality of processed materials as well as being a factor which causes serious damages to the tool and the machine. This study is related to the monitoring and smart control of chatter problem that can compensate machining-chatter faster and produce processed goods with more precision by autonomous compensation. The above-mentioned machining-chatter compensator includes the chatter vibration sensor and the chatter compensator that estimates the compensation value according to the sensor detecting the chatter vibration of machine-tool and the chatter vibration detected from the sensor while having a feature of being organized by interlocking with the machine-tool controller.
Vibration causes noise and sometimes makes structure unstable. Especially, due to the efforts of lightening, deformation of flexible structure is increased in its shape. Just a little disturbance can cause vibration and low damping ratio makes residual vibration last long time. This research is concerned with the model reference neuro-controller design for the vibration suppression of smart structures. By using a model reference neurocontroller, which is one of the algorithms of adaptive control, we performed an adaptive control of flexible cantilever plate and opened box structure with piezoelectric materials. The proposed adaptive vibration control algorithm, a model reference neuro-controller, was proved in its effectiveness by applying to an opened box structure. The model reference neuro-controller is implemented with DSP, and the real-time adaptive vibration control experiment results confirm that the model reference neuro-controller is reliable.
