  • Objectives: To develop the smart sensor to protect worker's health from chemical exposure by adopting ICT (Information and Communications Technology) technologies. Methods: To develope real-time chemical exposure monitoring system, IoT (Internet of Things) sensor technology and regulations were reviewed. We developed and produced smart sensor. A smart sensor is a system consisting of a sensor unit, a communication unit, and a platform. To verify the performance of smart sensors, each sensor has been certified by the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS). Results: Chemicals (TVOC; Total Volatile Organic Compounds, Cl2: Chlorine, HF: Hydrogen fluoride and HCN: Hydrogen cyanide) were selected according to a priority logic (KOSHA Alert, acute poisoning statistics, literature review). Notifications were set according to OEL (occupational exposure limit). Sensors were selected based on OEL and the capabilities of the sensors. Communication is designed to use LTE (Long Term Evolution) and Wi-Fi at the same time for convenience. Electronic platform were applied to build this monitoring system. Conclusions: Real-time monitoring system for OEL of hazardous chemicals in workplace was developed. Smart sensor can detect chemicals to complement monitoring of traditional workplace environmental monitoring such as short term and peak exposure. Further research is needed to expand the scope of application, improve reliability, and systematically application.

  • This paper describes the smart illuminating system based on the obstacle environmental presetting to improve the user convenience to easy lighting and energy conservation. Obstacle environment has trouble controlling the illuminating equipment using manual buttons in certain circumstances, which requires a smart remote controller. The smart remote controller is operated by the smart phone, motion sensor and timer to turn on and off the lamps. The event sensor module transmits the signals of the event occurrence to equipment on the remote place when smart phone and motion sensor detect an event, and the illuminator received the event turn on or off the lamp. The system results in energy saving by simple on/off control and manipulating the operating time with controlling the illuminating system preset by user's obstacle or preference circumstances. The proposed system implementation is experimented to figure out the energy saving about13.5w/h and the optimized convenience control.

  • In this paper, solar-powered, multi-scale, vibration-impedance sensor node on Imote2 platform is presented for hybrid structural health monitoring (SHM) in cable-stayed bridge. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are proposed. Firstly, vibration- and impedance-based hybrid SHM methods are briefly described. Secondly, the multi-scale vibration and impedance sensor node on Imote2-platform is presented on the design of hardware components and embedded software for vibration- and impedance-based SHM. In this approach, a solar-powered energy harvesting is implemented for autonomous operation of the smart sensor nodes. Finally, the feasibility and practicality of the smart sensor-based SHM system is evaluated on a full-scale cable-stayed bridge, Hwamyung Bridge in Korea. Successful level of wireless communication and solar-power supply for smart sensor nodes are verified. Also, vibration and impedance responses measured from the target bridge which experiences various weather conditions are examined for the robust long-term monitoring capability of the smart sensor system.

  • In this paper, a smart sensor system for the MEMS pressure sensor was developed. A compensation algorithm and programmable calibration circuits were presented to eliminate errors caused by temperature drift of piezoresistive pressure sensors in itself. This system consisted of signal conditioning, calibration, temperature detection, microprocessor, and communication parts and these were integrated into a SOC. A RS-232 interface was employed for monitoring and control of a smart sensor system. The area of fabricated IC is $4.38{\times}3.78\;mm^2$ and a $0.35{\mu}m$ high voltage CMOS process was used. Compensation error for temperature drift of 50 KPa pressure sensors was measured into ${\pm}0.48%$ in the range of $-40^{\circ}C{\sim}150^{\circ}C$. Total power consumption was 30.5 mW.

  • Recent advancements of wireless communication technology and miniaturization technique enables the implementation of wireless sensor network(WSN) using smart sensors. In addition, the research on the application of WSN to various fields of our daily life is performing briskly[1]. In this paper, we described the implementation of campus vehicle management system using wireless sensor nodes as an application of WSN. To do this, we have investigated the functions of commercial wireless sensor nodes such as transmission power control and node identification. We also proposed the architecture and operation procedure for the real system implementation.

  • It is essential to investigate the structure and the main characteristics of BSN (Bio-Sensor Network) platform in built smart healthcare environment while designing healthy housing facilities. For this study, WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) data transmission technologies have been employed with medical sensors, and optimal medical devices would provide various Web 2.0 services by connecting to the WiBro network. The BSN platform normally recognizes in surroundings of WBAN (Wireless Body Area Network) or WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network), and it is possible to manage sensor nodes by utilizing SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) and REST (REpresentational State Transfer). In addition, the feature of SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) for mobile gateway is also included for being adapted to huge network structure. Finally, BSN platform will play a role as important clues for developing personal WSN service models for smart healthy housing properties.

  • This paper presents the smart fan which is operated by a small conventional motor and an ultrasonic sensor. The smart fan generates cool wind with regulated speed of wing by the distance between the user and the fan. In this research, an 8-bit microcontroller (ATmega128) and an ultrasonic sensor (NT-TS601) are utilized for the system control and sensing information. In order to obtain the speed information from the encoderless DC motor, a stroboscope is used, which provides the voltage variation by the motor speed. The proposed smart fan makes the user feel cool, convenient and safe at a low cost.

  • This paper presents a virtual sensor system that is an effective method to test application software of smart sensors. The common way of testing sensor application is to build a test board, connect sensors to the board, and test sensor applications on the board with sensor's measurements as inputs. The problem of testing sensor application software with sensor's measurements as inputs is the restriction of test data. In other words, software testers cannot manipulate test data, because test data is generated by sensors. To solve this problem a virtual sensor system is presented in this paper. The virtual sensor system enables software testers to manipulate measurements of sensors. In the virtual sensor system, generation of virtual sensors comprises three stages - sensor selection, sensor characterization, and determination of output patterns. Sensor's measurements that can be manipulated through the virtual sensor system make the process of testing efficient. To show the usefulness of our virtual sensor system, it is applied to sensor applications in Android platform and the result of experiments is shown.

  • LEDs are becoming the most suitable candidate replacing traditional fluorescent street-light lamps because of its energy efficiency and high brightness. Furthermore, most countries are urging to pursue energy savings in conjunction with IT and sensor network. In order to conserve energy of LED lamp and ensure the safety of pedestrian, we propose a new smart control method for LED light system based on USN using compound sensors, such as illuminance, motion, temperature and humidity sensor. An elaborate simulation shows that the proposed system with a smart control based switching can reduce the energy by 40%, compared to the previous street-light system with a fixed time based switching.
