  • Recently, 3S Mathematics Education (Storytelling mathematics education, SMART mathematics education, and STEAM mathematics education) is emphasized. Based on recently published report on Storytelling mathematics textbook, we propose executable expression based SMART storytelling mathematics related to the elementary mathematic curriculum on 3D building blocks. We designed letters and expressions to represent three dimensional shape of 3D building blocks, and we compare its characteristics with that of LEGO blocks. We assert that text-based executable expressions not only construct what students want to make but also teachers can read students thinking process and can support educational help based on students needs. We also present linear function, quadratic function, and function variable concepts using executable expressions based on 3D building block as an example of SMART storytelling mathematics. This research was supported by the collaborated creativity mentoring project between Siheung City and college of education at Seoul National University. We hope designed executable expressions can be used for the development of SMART storytelling mathematics education.

  • The city is experiencing various problems such as traffic congestion, environmental pollution, urban crime, and faces the limit of growth. Recently, various attempts to build a Smart City have been spreading around the world, in order to solve these problems. Smart City is attracting attention as the core platform of the future city with the $4^{th}$ industrial revolution. However, various definitions of smart city are mixed, and the methods and strategies for implementing smart city are changing or evolving due to the development of technology and the experience during that time. This study summarizes the definition of various smart city through literature review and suggests smart city building strategy that enables sustainable growth of cities as a platform of the $4^{th}$ industrial revolution era.

  • Background and objective: Vertical smart farm (VSF) is an alternative that contributes to solving various problems such as climate change and food shortage. This study focused on the types and awareness of VSF to introduce and diffuse VSF. We aimed to investigate the types of VSF and citizens' awareness on VSF. We analyzed 1) where the smart farm technology could be implemented on a building; 2) what citizens think about VSF; and 3) suggested what is most necessary for the introduction and diffusion of VSF in the future based on citizens' perception. Methods: VSF types were investigated through case studies on VSF in Korea and overseas. Citizens' perception on VSF was investigated through a questionnaire survey. A statistical analysis was conducted with the survey results for implications of the introduction and diffusion of VSF. Results: Four types of VSF were derived: rooftop farms, facade farms, indoor farms, and farms using the whole building. The survey showed that 29.2%, 27.8%, and 22.2% of respondents knew well about urban agriculture, smart farms, and vertical smart farms, respectively. Respondents answered that improving awareness is the most important factor to introduce VSF. According to the statistical analysis, it was determined that education and promotion of the necessity of VSF would be important to diffuse the VSF. Conclusion: VSF can be a solution to a variety of problems we face. The results of this study suggest a direction for the introduction and diffusion of VSF. In order to introduce VSF in the future, additional studies must be conducted on the legal system.

  • With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, propelled by digital technology, we are transitioning into an era of hyperconnectivity, where everything and objects are becoming interconnected. A smart supply chain refers to a supply chain system where various sensors and RFID tags are attached to objects such as machinery and products used in the manufacturing and transportation of goods. These sensors and tags collect and analyze process data related to the products, providing meaningful information for operational use and decision-making in the supply chain. Before the spread of COVID-19, the fundamental principles of supply chain management were centered around 'cost minimization' and 'high efficiency.' A smart supply chain overcomes the linear delayed action-reaction processes of traditional supply chains by adopting real-time data for better decision-making based on information, providing greater transparency, and enabling enhanced collaboration across the entire supply chain. Therefore, in this study, a hierarchical model for building a smart supply chain was constructed to systematically derive the importance of key factors that should be strategically considered in the construction of a smart supply chain, based on the major factors identified in previous research. We applied AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) techniques to identify urgent improvement areas in smart SCM initiatives. The analysis results showed that the external supply chain integration is the most urgent area to be improved in smart SCM initiatives.

  • In the situation where there should be a gap between the design environments of 2D drawing and 3D BIM modeling, it is unavoidable aspect to face confusion caused by parallel usage of both technologies unless the project delivery systems are entirely upgraded to 3D. Therefore, it is critical to make efforts to minimize this confusion. Meanwhile, detailed drawings have very important roles in the construction process because they do not only concretely express construction methods for a given design plan but also provide basis for quantity takeoff and construction cost estimation etc. This paper suggests a plan to standardize detailed information based on BIM standard framework in order to make BIM realize the information. In the short term, this plan provides improved environment where both BIM and CAD technologies can be applied and, in the long term, it provides bases for BIM to replace CAD technology.

  • This paper introduces a multi-purpose smart fusion sensor. Normally, this type of sensor can contribute to energy savings specifically related to lighting and heating/air conditioning systems by detecting individuals in an office building. If a fire occurs, the sensor can provide information regarding the presence and location of residents in the building to a management center. The system consists of four sensors: a thermopile sensor for detecting heat energy, an ultrasonic sensor for measuring the distance of objects from the sensor, a fire detection sensor, and a passive infrared sensor for detecting temperature change. The system has a wireless communication module to provide the management center with control information for lighting and heating/air conditioning systems. We have also demonstrated the usefulness of the proposed system by applying it to a real environment.

  • Seismic response control has always been a grave concern with the damage and collapse of many buildings during the past earthquakes. While there are several existing techniques like base isolation, viscous damper, moment-resisting beam-column connections, tuned mass damper, etc., many of these are succumbing to either of large displacement, near-fault, and long-period earthquakes. Keeping this viewpoint, extensive research on the application of smart materials for seismic response control of buildings was attempted during the last decade. Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) with its unique properties of superelasticity and shape memory effect is one of the smart materials used for seismic control of buildings. In this paper, an exhaustive review has been compiled on the seismic control applications of SMA in buildings. Unique properties of SMA are discussed in detail and different phases of SMA along with crystal characteristics are illustrated. Consequently, various seismic control applications of SMA are discussed in terms of performance and compared with prevalent base isolators, bracings, beam-column connections, and tuned mass damper systems.

  • There are many difficulties in the applications of smart manufacturing technology in the era of the 4th industrial revolution. In this paper, a test bed was built to aim for acquiring smart manufacturing technology, and the test bed was designed to acquire basic technologies necessary for PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), HMI, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and big data. By building a vehicle maintenance lift that can be easily accessed by the general public, PLC control technology and HMI drawing technology can be acquired, and by using cloud services, workers can respond to emergencies and alarms regardless of time and space. In addition, by managing and monitoring data for smart manufacturing, it is possible to acquire basic technologies necessary for embedded systems, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and big data. It is expected that the improvement of smart manufacturing technology capability according to the results of this study will contribute to the effect of creating added value according to the applications of smart manufacturing technology in the future.
