  • Unmanned aircraft system traffic management (UTM) service for the safe operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) such as drones using commercial communication networks such as long-term evolution (LTE) and 5G in low-altitude areas of 150m or less is being studied in several countries. In this paper, whether it is possible to secure three-dimensional (3D) coverage for UTM service using the existing LTE cellular network for terrestrial usersis analyzed through simulations. The practicality in the real environment is confirmed by performing performance analysis in the actual topographical environment and the LTE base station layouts in Korea. According to the analysis results, as the altitude increases, the number of line-of-sight (LOS) interference base stations increases, resulting in a worse signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR), but coverage is secured except for the limited areas within 150m. was confirmed to be possible. In addition, it is confirmed that a significant proportion of outage areas could be reduced by placing a small number of additional base stations for the outage area.

  • Human spaceflight experience in extra-vehicular activity (EVA) is limited to two regimes: the micro-gravity environment of Earth orbit, and the lunar surface environment at one-sixth of Earth's gravity. Future human missions to low-gravity bodies, including asteroids, comets, and the moons of Mars, will require EVA techniques that are beyond the current experience base. In order to develop robust approaches for exploring these small bodies, the dynamics associated with human exploration on low-gravity surface must be characterized. This paper examines the translational and rotational motion of an astronaut on the surface of a small body, and it is shown that the low-gravity environment will pose challenges to the surface mobility of an astronaut, unless new tools and EVA techniques are developed. Possibilities for addressing these challenges are explored, and utilization of the International Space Station to test operational concepts and hardware in preparation for a low-gravity surface EVA is discussed.

  • Mobile network applications are growing and this requires a fast and efficient transport method between the BS(Base Station) and the MSC(Mobile Switching Center). One possible solution is to use ATM and a voice CODEC standard which compresses 64kbps voice data to less than 8kbps. The low bit tate and small-sized packets made by the voice CODEC imply that significant amount of link bandwidth would be wasted, if this small-sized packet is carried by one ATM cell. The cell assembly delay increases if one ATM cell is fully filled with the small-sized packets. For the bandwidth-efficient transmission of low-rate, short, and variable length packets in delay sensitive applications, AAL-2 was standardized. This paper evaluates performance of AAL-2 by using voice CODEC standard.

  • Most of the discussed power efficient routing algorithms, such as LEACH, PEDAP and etc., assume that a base station has infinite resources and there is no traffic limit. However, these assumptions cannot be applied to typical wireless sensor network environments, especially a small sensor network using a normal node as the base station. Moreover, many studies on the wireless sensor networks have not been considering the reverse transmission scheme which transmits data from a sink node to the normal nodes. We propose a bitarray-based reverse routing method which is a power efficient routing algorithm for the wireless sensor networks. The proposed method can be easily implemented by using the tree-based routing scheme and can be worked well with the small memory size for the address of sensor nodes. The experimental result shows that the amount of message transmission of the proposed bitarray-based reverse routing method can be reduced about 61.3% or more compared to the previous methods.

  • Cellular network applications are growing drastically and this requires a fast and efficient transport method between the base station and the mobile switching center. One possible solution is to use ATM links. The low data rate and small-sized packets in the typical cellular applications imply that significant amount of link bandwidth would be wasted, if this small sized packet is carried by one ATM cell. For efficient operation for such cellular and low bit rate applications, a new type of ATM Adaptation Layer, AAL Type 2, has been proposed. In this paper, the principles of AAL Type 2 are briefly described along with the introduction of other alternatives which have formed the basis for this new AAL. The result from the simulation to study the performance of the AAL Type 2 is discussed from the view point of packet delay and ATM cell use efficiency. Due to the variable size of packets in this application, the fairness issue in serving variable sized packets is also discussed along with the effect of fair queueing algorithm implemented at AAL Type 2.

  • In ultra-dense heterogeneous networks, the amount of interference from small-cell base stations(SBS) to macro-cell user equipments (MUEs) increases significantly as the number of SBSs increases and it causes the MUEs to decrease the signal-to-interference and noise ratio(SINR) and system capacity. In this paper, we propose a small-cell based cooperative multi-point(CoMP) communication scheme that can guarantee the performance of MUEs even when the number of SBSs increases. In the proposed scheme, MUEs first find SBSs that give signal strength equal to or greater than a given SINR threshold and then they are served by different numbers of the selected SBSs using CoMP to improve the performance of MUEs. Simulation results show that the proposed small-cell based CoMP scheme outperforms other interference management or CoMP schemes in terms of the SINR and system capacity of MUEs.

  • Radio base stations, which are widely distributed across large areas, have many difficulties in managing them. Unmanned radio base stations in remote mountains are having a hard time accessing them in case of emergencies. Major telephone service providers only remotely control incoming and outgoing information and local small business partners responsible for maintaining actual facilities do not possess such technologies, so they are each checked during field visits. In this study, in order to monitor temperature, humidity, fire condition, and power operation at a wide range of radio base stations, real-time monitoring is carried out at the office of Klaus server through real-time monitoring.

  • With the increasing number of mobile device users worldwide, utilizing mobile edge computing (MEC) devices close to users for content caching can reduce transmission latency than receiving content from a server or cloud. However, because MEC has limited storage capacity, it is necessary to determine the content types and sizes to be cached. In this study, we investigate a caching strategy that increases the hit ratio from small base stations (SBSs) for mobile users in a heterogeneous network consisting of one macro base station (MBS) and multiple SBSs. If there are several SBSs that users can access, the hit ratio can be improved by reducing duplicate content and increasing the diversity of content in SBSs. We propose a Deep Q-Network (DQN)-based caching strategy that considers time-varying content popularity and content redundancy in multiple SBSs. Content is stored in the SBS in a divided form using maximum distance separable (MDS) codes to enhance the diversity of the content. Experiments in various environments show that the proposed caching strategy outperforms the other methods in terms of hit ratio.

  • In this paper, we consider a heterogeneous network (HetNet) consisting of one macro base station and multiple small base stations, and assume the coordinated multi-point transmission between the base stations. In addition, we assume that the channel between the base station and the user consists of path loss and Rayleigh fading. Under these assumptions, we present the energy efficiency (EE) achievable by the user for a given base station and we formulate an optimization problem of dynamic cell selection and transmit power allocation to maximize the total EE of the HetNet. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised deep learning method to solve the optimization problem. The proposed deep learning-based scheme can provide high EE while having low complexity compared to the conventional iterative convergence methods. Through the simulation, we show that the proposed dynamic cell selection scheme provides higher EE performance than the maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio scheme and the Lagrangian dual decomposition scheme, and the proposed transmit power allocation scheme provides the similar performance to the trust region interior point method which can achieve the maximum EE.
