중온 혐기성 연속회분식 공정에 의한 도시하수슬러지의 소화가능성 평가 (Application of Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor to Mesophilic Digestion of Municipal Sewage Sludge)

  • Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the performance of anaerobic sequencing batch reactor(ASBR) for digestion of a municipal sludge. Each cycle of the ASBR comprised feeding, two-or three-day reaction, one-day thickening, and withdrawal. The reactors were operated at an HRT of 10days and 5days with an equivalent organic loading rate of 0.8-1.54 gVS/l/d, 1.81-3.56 gVS/l/d at 35$\circ$C, respectively. Solids accumulation was remarkable in the ASBR during start-up period, and directly affected by settleable solids in the feed sludge. Floatation thickening occured in the ASBRs, and Solids profiles at the end of thickening step dramatically changed at solid-liquid interface. Slight difference in solids concentrations was observed within thickened sludge bed. Efficiencies through floatation thickening were comparable to that of additional thickening of the completely mixed control reactor. Average solids concentrations in the ASBRs were 2.2-2.6 times higher than that in the control throughout the total operation period. The dehydrogenase activity had a strong correlation with the solids concentration. Organics removals based on clarified effluent of the ASBRs were consistently above 86%. Remarkable increase in equivalent gas production of 27-52% was observed at the ASBRs compared with the control though the control and ASBRs showed similiar effluent quality. Thus, digestion of a municipal sludge was possible using the ASBR in spite of high concentration of solids in the sludge.

Feasibility Studies on Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor for Sludge Treatment

  • Digestion of a municipal wastewater sludge by the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor(ASBR) was investigated to evaluate the performance of the ASBR process at a critical condition of high-solids-content feed. The reactors were operated at an HRT of 10 days with an equivalent loading rate of 0.8-1.5 gVS/L/d at $35^{\circ}C.$ The main conclusions drawn from this study were as follows: 1. Digestion of a municipal wastewater sludge was possible using the ASBR in spite of high concentration of settleable solids in the sludge. The ASBRS with 3- and 4-day cycle period showed almost identical high digestion performances. 2. No adverse effect on digestion stability was observed in the ASBRS in spite of withdrawal and replenishment of $30\%\;or\;40\%$ of liquid contents. A conventional anaerobic digester could be easily converted to the ASBR without any stability problem. 3. Flotation thickening occurred in thicken step of the ASBRS throughout steady state, and floating bed volume at the end of thicken period occupied about $70\%$ of the working volume of the reactor. Efficiency of flotation thickening in the ASBRS could be comparable to that of additional gravity thickening of a completely mixed digester. 4. Solids were accumulated rapidly in the ASBR during start-up period. Solids concentrations in the ASBRS were 2.6 times higher than that in the completely mixed control reactor at steady state. Dehydrogenase activity had a strong correlation with the solids concentration. Dehydrogenase activity of the digested sludge in the ASBR was 2.9 times higher than that of the sludge in the control reactor, and about 25 times higher than that of the subnatant in the ASBR. 5. Remarkable increase in equivalent gas production of $52\%$ was observed at the ASBRS compared with the control reactor in spite of similar Quality of clarified effluent from the ASBRS and control reactor. The increase in gas production from the ASBRS was believed to be combined results of accumulation of microorganisms, higher driving force applied, and additional long-term degradation of organics continuously accumulated.

광경화성 수지에 고정화된 활성슬러지에 의한 페놀 분해 (Degradation of Phenol by Activated Sludge Immobilized with Photo-crosslinked Resin)

  • 본 연구에서는 페놀 분해 능력이 있는 활성슬러지 를 광경화성 수지에 포괄 고정화하여 페놀 분해에 미치는 영향인자에 대하여 조사 검토하였다. 고정화 활성슬러지의 경우 free 활성슬러지 보다 넓은 pH 범위에서 페놀 분해 상대활성도가 높게 나 타났£며, 고정화비드 직경이 작을수록 페놀분해 시 간이 짧았다. 페놀농도 2000 mg/L까지는 free 활 성슬러지의 분해시간이 짧았으나, 3000 mg/L에서 는 고정화 활성슬러지의 분해능이 높았다. 고정화비 드 주입량에 따른 페놀 분해성은 반융기 내에 주입 된 고정화비드양에 정비례 하지는 않았으나 주입량 이 많을수록 페놀 처리율이 높았다. 고정화 활성슬 러지의 반융에서는 반복샤용 7회 이상일 때의 상대 활성도는 처음의 약 8배 정도 증가하였다. 고정화 활성슬러지를 합성폐수 또는 증류수에서 진탕 또는 정지상태로 20일간 보관한 후에는 700 mg/L의 페놀이 24시간 후면 거의 분해되었으며, 증 류수에 정지된 상태로, 40일간 보관한 후에는 마찬가지로 24시간 후에 96.7 % 이상이 분해되었다. 또 한 고정화 활성슬러지를 합성폐수에서 호기적으로 보존하면 80일간 보존이 가능하였다. 고정화 활성슬러지를 사용한 연속처리에서는 용적 부하 5.59 kg-phenol/m3.d에서 95 % 이상의 페놀 이 제거되었으며, 연속실험에서 페놀제거 효율이 95 % 이상일 때 처리성척을 비교해보면, 고정화 활성 슬러지 빛 free 활성슬러지 용척부하는 각각 7.46, 3 3.72 kg-phenol/m3.day로써 고정화 활성슬러지가 2배 더 높은 부하에서 처리가 가능하였다.

고리형 에테르의 생물학적 처리 특성 (Removal Characteristics of Cyclic Ethers in Biological Wastewater Treatment System)

  • The fate of two cyclic ethers, THF(Tetrahydrofuran) and 1,4-Dioxane, in conventional biological wastewater treatment plants was investigated using sequential activated sludge process. Removal efficiency of THF were about 86% in average, which was greater than that of 1,4-Dioxane, 30%. However, it was not clear whether the removal of cyclic ethers in biological system was caused by microbial activity or not. Thus treatability tests were conducted by batch experiments. The effects of mixing, aeration and the addition of activated sludge on the removal of cyclic ethers were investigated in batch experiments. THF was totally removed by mixing and aeration in 24 hours while removal ratio of 1,4-Dioxane was at most 30% for the same period. This results could be ascribed to the differences in Henry's law constants between the two chemicals. In addition, biological degradation including biosorption was not obviously observed in these batch tests.

UASB 반응조를 이용한 매립지 침출수의 혐기성 처리 (Anaerobic Treatment of Landfill Leachate Using a Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor)

  • 침출수의 혐기성 처리시 오염물질 거동과 미생물 특성을 평가하기 위하여 10개월간 실험을 수행하였다. 상향류 혐기성 슬러지 블랭킷 (UASB) 반응조의 경우 최대 유기물 부하 $20kgCOD/m^3.d$까지 약 90%의 COD 제거율을 나타내었다. 높은 유기물 부하 ($18-20kgCOD/m^3.d$)에서는 프로피온산의 농도가 상대적으로 증가하여 프로피온산의 초산으로의 전환이 율속단계로 나타났다. UASB 반응조를 이용한 침출수 처리는 높은 유기물 제거능에도 불구하고 입상슬러지와 반응조 내부 등의 무기물 축적으로 인한 운전상의 문제가 발생하였다. 입상슬러지 내 주된 무기물의 성분은 칼슘화합물로 나타났다. 본 연구에서는 비메탄 활성도의 급격한 감소는 발생되지 않았으나 무기물 축적으로 인한 운전상의 문제를 저감하기 위해서는 무기물 제거를 위한 전처리 공정의 도입이 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

Microbial and Physicochemical Monitoring of Granular Sludge During Start-up of Thermophilic UASB Reactor

  • Mesophilically-grown granular sludge seeded in thermophilic UASB reactor was monitored to better understand the start-up process of the reactor. The reactor was fed with a synthetic wastewater containing glucose. As COD loading rate increased stepwise, methane production rate increased. Maximum values of COD removal efficiency (95%) and methane production rate (5.3 l/day) were achieved by approximately day-80 and remained constant afterward. However, physicochemical and microbial properties of granules kept changing even after day-80. Specific methanogenic activity (SMA) was initially negligible, and increased continuously until day-153 and remained constant afterward, showing the maximum value of $1.51{\pm}0.13\;g\;CH_4-COD/g$ VSS/day. Deteriorated settling ability of granules recovered the initial value by day-98 and was maintained afterward, as determined by sludge volume index. Initially reduced granule size increased until day-126, reaching a plateau of 1.1 mm. Combined use of fluorescence in situ hybridization and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) allowed to localize families of Methanosaetaceae and Merhanosarcinaceae in granules with time Quantitative analyses of CLSM images of granule sections showed abundance patterns of the methanogens and numerical dominance of Methanosaeta spp. throughout the start-up period. The trend of SMA agreed well with abundance patterns of the methanogens.

Anammox Bacteria Enrichment in Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) Reactor

  • We investigated the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) reaction in a lab-stale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. Our aim was to detect and enrich the organisms responsible for the anammox reaction using a synthetic medium that contained low concentrations of substrates (ammonium and nitrite). The reactor was inoculated with granular sludge collected from a full-scale anaerobic digestor used for treating brewery wastewater The experiment was performed during 260 days under conditions of constant ammonium concentration ($50\;mg\;NH_4^+-N/L$) and different nitrite concentrations ($50{\~}150\;mg\;NO_2-N/L$). After 200 days, anammox activity was observed in the system. The microorganisms involved in this anammox reaction were identified as Candidatus B. Anammoxidans and K. Stuttgartiensis using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH ) method.

상향류식 혐기성 입상슬러지 공법의 유기폐수 처리 효율에 미치는 온도의 영향 (Temperature Effect of the UASB Process for Treatment of Organic Waste)

  • Effects of temperature on the efficiency of the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket(UASB) process for treatment of wastewater from a starch and related products manufacturing industry were investigated using laboratory scale reactors equipped with two types of Gas-Solid Separator(GSS). Both fresh digested sludge and granular sludge stored nearly for one year at room temperature were good as a seeding material. The reactors seeded with aged granular sludge showed slow start-up, however, lowered activity at the initial period was recovered gradually. The GSS with an inner cylinder was proved to be effective in liquid-solid separation compared to the conventional type. Although the rate of organic removal and gas production per unit volatile suspended solids in the reactor reduced significantly as the temperature varied from 35 to $20^{\circ}C$, possibility of operation at low temperatures was shown as a result of gradual buildup of volatile suspended solids in the bed. Stable operation with a reduced efficiency was possible at a COD loading of $5-8kg/m^3/day$ at a temperature as low as $20^{\circ}C$.

침지형 분리막 생물반응기에서 미생물 농도와 슬러지 부하에 따른 미생물 활성 변화와 막오염 특성 연구 (Effects of Biomass Concentration and Sludge Loading Rate on Bioactivity and Membrane Fouling in a Submerged Membrane Bioreactor System)

  • 유기물과 질소를 동시에 제거하기 위하여 연속회분식으로 운전한 MBR (membrane bioreactor)시스템에서 미생물농도와 슬러지 부하량이 막오염과 미생물 활성에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 막오염은 MLSS (mixed liquor suspended solid) 농도 증가에 따라 조금씩 증가하는 경향을 보였고, 그 효과는 비포기 조건보다 포기 조건에는 좀더 두드러지게 나타났다. MLSS 농도는 막오염에 직접적인 커다란 영향을 주지는 않으나, 지나치게 높은 MLSS에서 유도되는 낮은 슬러지 부하에서는 막오염이 크게 증가하는 현상이 발견되었고, 이러한 조건에서는 포기에 의한 막 세척 효과도 크게 줄어들었다. 미생물의 개별 활성도는 슬러지 부하가 감소할수록 지속적으로 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다 반응조 전체 활성도 또한 17,000 mg/L 이상의 높은 MLSS로부터 유도되는 낮은 슬러지 부하율에서는 높은 미생물 농도에도 불구하고 오히려 감소했는데 이는 기질 부족으로 인한 경쟁으로 활성도가 떨어지고, 용액의 점성 증가로 인해 산소 전달율이 저하되었기 때문이다.
