Recycling Energy from Mixture of Sewage Sludge and Petroleum Coke Waste

  • The disposal of sewage sludge using landfills and ocean dumping is no longer a viable option due to land scarcity and increasingly stringent environmental control regulations. As such, various efforts have been made to develop new sewage sludge recycling technologies. This work investigates the fundamental physical and chemical characteristics of rural type sewage sludge from Chungnam province in South Korea. The average moisture content, ignition loss, elementary analysis, and average heating value of the sewage sludge samples were examined. The average moisture content of the dewatered sludge was about 80%, while the organic matter was about 50% of the total solid sludge weight. The average heating value of a sewage sludge and petroleum coke waste mixture(1:1 weight ratio) was about 5,000 ㎉/kg, thereby indicating a high potential for energy recycling.

활성도를 부여한 회수수 슬러지의 콘크리트 혼화재 활용 (Practical Use of Activated Recycling Water Sludge for Admixture of Concrete)

  • 레미콘공장에서 발생되는 회수수는 대부분 재활용되고 있으나, 회수수 슬러지에는 시멘트, 골재, 혼화제 등이 포함되어 있어, 콘크리트 제조시 성능을 저하시키는 요인으로 작용하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 회수수에 포함되어 있는 슬러지를 콘크리트용 혼화재료로서 활용하고자 기존의 연구를 참고하여 슬러지를 하소하여 활성도를 부여하였다. 활성도를 부여한 슬러지를 콘크리트용 혼화재로 사용한 특성을 분석하기 위하여 기본배합을 고로슬래그 미분말 대체, 플라이애시 대체, 고로슬래그 미분말과 플라이애시를 혼합 대체한 3가지 수준으로 하였으며, 기본배합에 대하여 활성 슬러지를 결합재의 2.5%씩 12.5%까지 대체하였다. 그 결과, 슬러지 대체율이 증가할수록 슬럼프는 다소 감소하였으며, 공기량은 증가하였으나, 큰 변화는 보이지 않았다. 콘크리트의 압축강도는 슬러지의 대체율 증가에 따라 소폭으로 증가하는 경향이었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 레미콘 공장에서 발생되는 회수수 슬러지에 활성도를 부여하면 콘크리트 품질에는 큰 변화가 없을 것으로 판단되며, 회수수의 슬러지 농도를 저감시켜 레미콘 품질향상에도 기여할 것으로 전망된다.

제지산업의 지속가능한 처리공정을 위한 제지슬러지 재활용 기술

  • This paper has investigated physicochemical properties and conventional and environmental-friendly treatment methods of paper mill sludge to emphasize the importance and necessity of the sludge recycling. The paper mill sludge generally shows high contents of calcium and water, and is mostly discharged by landfill after incineration process rather than being recycled due to technical or economical problems. In recent years, however, several possible methods for recycling the paper mill sludge have been suggested for its sustainable process as follows; compost, raw material for the construction and paper industry, new energy source for reducing fossil fuel use and raw material of activated carbon for treating paper mill wastewater. Thus the authors suggest that practical recycling technologies of the paper mill sludge must be developed for substantiality in the paper industry through comprehending physicochemical compositions and generation status of the sludge and actively performing various related studies. Furthermore, this investigation could be used as preliminary information for the study on recycled paper development using paper mill sludge incineration ash.

석회를 이용한 펄프공장 폐액의 화학적 처리에 관한 연구 (The study of chemical treatment of pulp mill bleaching waste liquor using lime)

  • This study was conducted to know the possibility of reducing lime dosage by recycling sludge from bleaching wastewater lime coagulation settlement treatment at pulp mill process. In case of bleaching wastewater at the pulp mill process, when the lime dosage was increased, the removal efficiency of TSS(Total Suspended Solids) was increased, proportionally, but the organic removal efficiency was increased very slowly. It was concluded that sludge recycling at the lime coagulation settlement process was effective method to reduce the requirement of lime dosage. At the lime coagulation settlement process with sludge recycling, when the recycling number was increased, the organic removal efficiency was decreased, sharply. It was evaluated that the pH could be the basic standard for lime supplement by sludge recycling.

  • 반도체 및 태양광 산업에서는 반도체 소자 및 솔라셀을 제조하기 위하여 실리콘 웨이퍼가 사용되고 있다. 실리콘 웨이퍼는 실리콘 잉곳의 절단으로부터 만들어지며 이 공정에서 실리콘 슬러지가 발생한다. 반도체 소자의 사용처가 점점 증가함에 따라 실리콘 슬러지의 발생량 또한 증가하고 있는 실정이다. 최근 경제적인 측면과 효율성에 관한 측면에서 실리콘 슬러지의 재활용 기술이 폭넓게 연구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 실리콘 슬러지의 재활용 기술에 대한 특허와 논문을 분석하였다. 분석범위는 1982년~2011년까지의 미국, EU, 일본, 한국의 등록/공개된 특허와 SCI 논문으로 제한하였다. 특허와 논문은 키워드를 사용하여 수집하였고, 기술의 정의에 의해 필터링하였다. 특허와 논문의 동향은 연도, 국가, 기업, 기술에 따라 분석하여 나타내었다.

  • The purpose of this study is recycling of ready mixed concrete sludge as artificial aggregate by product technique of artificial aggregate in the normal temerature. For the qulity test of artificial aggregate using ready mixed concrete sludge, it is tested in the various aspect. Therefor, Quality of artificil aggregate is suitable as coarse aggregate except absoption, abrasion. For the application of aggregate in cement concrete, Coarse aggregate are replaced with artificial aggregate using ready mixed concrete sludge 100% of volume. The results of test shown that the artificial aggregate using ready mixed concrete sludge could be used replacement of coarse aggregate in cement concrete.

반도체 패키징 공정에서 발생하는 실리콘 슬러지의 재활용을 통한 Si@SiO2 제조 및 에폭시 몰딩 컴파운드로의 응용 (Synthesis of Silica Coated Silicon Substrate by Recycling Silicon Sludge Generated in Semiconductor Packaging Process and Their Application to Epoxy Molding Compound)

  • 본 연구에서는 반도체 패키징 공정에서 발생하는 실리콘 슬러지(Silicon-sludge, S-sludge)에 실리카층을 코팅(Silica coated silicon-sludge, SS-sludge)하였으며, 이를 에폭시 몰딩 컴파운드(Epoxy molding compound, EMC)의 필러로 적용하였다. 상세히는, 산세처리를 통해 S-sludge의 금속불순물을 제거하였으며, 졸-겔법을 통해 SS-sludge를 제조하였다. SS-sludge는 에폭시 고분자, 경화제 및 카본블랙과 혼합하여 EMC(Silica coated silicon-sludge EMC, SS-sludge EMC)로 제조되었다. 적외선 카메라를 통한 방열 특성 분석 결과, 제조된 SS-sludge EMC는 58.5℃의 가장 높은 표면 온도를 나타내었다. 이는 SS-sludge의 주성분인 실리콘의 높은 열전도도(150W/mK) 및 실리카 코팅에 의해 EMC의 방열 특성이 향상되었기 때문이다. 본 연구를 통해, 반도체 패키징 공정에서 발생하는 실리콘 슬러지를 고부가가치를 지닌 반도체 패키징용 EMC의 필러로 재활용할 수 있는 방안을 제시하였다.

석재 가공시 발생한 석분슬러지의 콘크리트 혼화재료로의 활용 (Utilization of Stone Sludge Produced by Stone Block Manufacturing Process as Concrete Admixtures)

  • The stone sludge produced during the manufacturing process of stone blocks is considered as one of industrial waste materials. This stone sludge are managed to either burying under the ground or stacking in the yard, but this disposal process is required an extra costs. The stone sludge disposal like burying or stacking also cause environmental pollutions such as ground pollution and subterranean water pollution. Thus, this study was conducted to explore the possibility of recycling of stone dust sludge as a concrete mixing material in order to extend recycling methods and to solve the shortage of aggregate caused by recently increased demand in construction. Based on the experiment results on various ratios of cement to stone sludge content, the compressive strengths of concrete were recorded in the range of $20{\sim}30N/mm2$. The results did not show any decrease in compressive strength due to the stone dust content. It can be concluded that the stone sludge produced by stone block manufacturing can be sufficiently recycled as one of concrete mixing materials in the aspect of compressive strength.

백상지 슬러지의 소성처리에 의한 재활용에 관한 연구 (Studies on the recycling of sludge originated from a copy paper mill by calcination)

  • Paper industry in Korea produces 14 million tons of paper and 1.3 million tons of sludge per year. Most of them has been treated by incineration, landfilling or ocean dumping. The sludge recycling to minimize the impact on the environment, so its importance is highlighted. In this study, in order to develop a new way of recycling the sludge, it was calcined and the recycled ash was tried to use as papermaking filler. Concerning the yield of calcium carbonate and the brightness and the rheology of the recycled calcination sludge, the optimum calcination conditions were found to be $600^{\circ}C$ and 12 hours. The sludge ash itself was not suitable for papermaking due to its color and low brightness. Thus the ash from the sludge was first mixed with a commercial filler and then utilized for papermaking. The effect of the increased hardness after high temperature treatment on wire abrasion was confirmed.

소화슬러지 탈수성 개선을 위한 폐달걀껍질 재활용 (Recycling of waste egg shells for dewaterability improvement in digested sludge with recycling of waste egg shells)

  • The purposes of this study were to examine applicability of waste egg shells as conditioning agent, to determine the optimum conditions for improving digested sludge dewaterability and to compare with before and after adding them. It estimated that the optimum conditions were dosage 30 g/L, particle size 10mesh, temp. $30^{\circ}C$, pH 7 and dewatering pressure $2.66{\pm}10^4{\;}N/m^2$. On the basis of induced optimum conditions, if adding waste egg shells in digested sludge, its specific resistance was $1.13{\pm}10^{12}{\;}m/kg$ and was low about 3 times than raw digested sludge $3.5{\pm}10^{12}{\;}m/kg $. Therefore, in view of waste recycling, it seemed that we could utilize waste egg shells as conditioning assent for improving dewaterability of digested sludge.
