  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of stabilization disposal and recycling on incinerated paper mill sludge ash as cement additives. It was investigated chemical(pH, ICP, TGA XRD) and physical(PDA, SEM) characteristics of the incineration ash. And the pozzolanic characteristics of incineration ash was applied to cement as additive to increase the compressive strength. The results were that the pH characteristic of incineration ash was strong alkalinity, the content of silica and alumina as a pozzolanic material was 50.97%, and the average particle size was $5.03{\mu}m$ respectively. When the ash contents as cement additive were varied in 0~15%(wt) of cement weight to explore the effect of the compressive strength on the solidified cement mortar, the proper amount of the incineration ash substituted was about 5~l0%(wt). Therefore we found that using the incineration ash as cement additive obtains the recycling of waste material, the stabilization disposal, the reduction of waste disposal expense, and the protection of environmental problem, too.

  • In recent years, problems of industrial solid wastes appear to be kind of national crises, caused by a sudden increase in their quantities, lack of disposal technique, and public discontent in installing plants for their disposal. This study is designed to investigate that pozzolana-based materials, such as blast furnace slag, fly-ash, paper sludge-ash, which are produced from industries as solid wastes, can be used as construction materials. The variations of concrete strength in function of compositional differences of raw materials including the wastes are studied experimentally. As a result, we find out that the blast furnace slag, the fly-ash, and the paper sludge-ash can be recycled as useful resources for replacement of cements by adjusting their substitution ratio.

  • As civilization progresses amount of sewage sludge continues to increase from a sewage disposal plant with a huge expenditure of water resources. So It is necessary to reduce the high costs of sewage disposal and the pollution of the environment and also a unit cost of artificial lightweight aggregate by continual recycling. The purpose of this study is to put artificial lightweight aggregate concrete to practical use by using sewage sludge and clay

  • We had passed through a serious water pollution with a rapid urbanization and industrialization in the 1960's. Seoul Chunggyechun Sewage Disposal System set uP in 1966 and finished in 1976, as the first sewage disposal system in Korea, had covered only 4 percentage of the sewage disposal system per capita for 10 years. Through holding the Asian Games in 1986 and the Olympic Games in 1988, we expanded the sewage disposal system so that it became increased 18 percentage of the population in 1986. Finally, we have installed about 60 sewage disposal system by 1994 for a large environmental investment which was critically caused by "Phenol Accident in Nakdong River" . Now, the sewage disposal system per capita covers 42 percentage and the activity for water quality improvement is going on rapidly. The method of sewage disposal is mainly "activated sludge process" . However, the technical ability for the sewage disposal has largely developed since 1991 so the "extended aeration process" is used in Po$\v{u}$n, Tangyang, Mun$\v{u}$i, "rotating biological contact process" in Onch$\v{u}$ng, Pukok, and "oxidation ditch process" in K$\v{o}$ch'ana.

  • A by-product, waste sludge water produced from ready mixed concrete(remicon) factories may affect our environmental contamination if it is discharged without proper waste disposal. In Korea, all waste sludge water has been recycled in the way of mixing water of remicon, but the quality of the concrete then produced can be deteriorated, so it might cause slump loss or irregular compressive strength. In this study, waste sludge water is divided into two parts, remicon sludge and residual water in order to make it's property more stable. Then, the remicon sludge and high-alkaline residual water were used as admixture and alkali activator respectively. In this paper we research about quality of with remicon sludge and residual water and performed the fundamental properties of cement matrix mixed with remicon sludge and residual water.

  • The Re-mi-con sludge water has been investigated because of environmental pollution and disposal cost. So, sludge water is partially reused as mixing water. However, if sludge water is reused too much that would influence the quality of concrete. KS specification limits the amount of sludge content up to 3$\%$ of cement weight. In this study, the effect of re-mi-con sludge on the characteristics of concrete is compared to raise the reuse ratio of re-mi-con sludge. From the test results, as blending ratio of re-mi-con sludge increases, workability is decreases. However, the re-mi-con sludge water have a minor effect on the strength development, the drying shrinkage and the resistance of freeze and thawing. Also, the existing model codes of drying shrinkage do not coincide with the test results of this study.

  • Industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants produce large amounts of sludge cakes for final disposal. This problem is an inevitable drawback inherent to the activated sludge process. Both the reduction of the amount of sludge produced and improvement of its dewaterability are presently very important issue also in Korea. So many pre-treatment processes have been developed in order to improve sludge dewatering efficiency. In this study the effects of hydrogen peroxide and paper sludge mixing processes were considered as reasonable alternatives to enhance sludge dewaterability. The CST of sludge was significantly decreased, and dewaterability improved by hydrogen peroxide oxidation treatment. The optimum dosage of hydrogen peroxide was proved to be 10mg/g-TS (when TS of sludge was 2%) with the conditions of pH 4 and only 1~2 minutes of reaction time. The mixing of paper sludge with sewage sludge was turned out to be very effective in reduction of sludge cake; 30% of sludge cake reduction was accomplished. Optimum mixing ratio of paper sludge was about 30%(v/v). This process also could save 25% of polymer to be required. These two alternatives are somewhat realistic, but it was concluded that paper sludge mixing process will be the best choice.

  • Sludge minimization from wastewater treatment plant is becoming more important to save disposal costs and to contribute to sustainable development. For the reduction of sludge production, solubilization and dewaterability of sludge are important factors in sludge processing. Ultrasonic treatment has been used to enhance sludge solubility and dewaterability with anaerobic digestion sludge, primary sludge, and activated sludge. At the ultrasonic power of 0.2 kW/L for 1 hour, anaerobic sludge and activated sludge showed higher solubilization efficiency than the primary sludge in terms of COD, proteins, and suspended solids. Ultrasonic treatment decreased sludge dewaterability and sludge settling characteristics up to 720 kJ/L of ultrasonic energy. In conclusion, ultrasonic treatment was effective for sludge solubilization but it deteriorate dewaterability (specific resistance) and settling characteristics (SVI) of sludge at the experimental conditions.

  • Phosphate removal through adsorbent, such as activated alumina, powdered aluminum oxide, flyash, blasted furnace slag and other materials, is commonly and widely practiced. The purpose of this study was to improve the removal efficiency of phosphorus in waste sludge earned at seafood processing factories. To investigate the utility and the feasibility of this sludge disposal process, experiment was carried out with a batch process. As a result, phosphate removal appears to increase with increasing adsorbent does, but shows no changes at an adsorbent does over 5g/l. With increasing ratios of initial phosphate concentration to adsorbent does, the amount of removed phosphate is increased while phosphate removal(%) is decreased. Wasted sludge, treated with zinc chloride chemically, represented a better efficiency than the untreated activated sludge and zinc chloride itself, when they reacted with phosphate solution.

  • When incineration method is utilized as a disposal process of sludge, the treatment generally consists of thickening, dewatering and incineration, implying that sludge dewaterability has a colose relationship with operating condition of a thickener. Dewatering factors should be, therefore investigated for achieving effective sludge treatment. No research on this has been performed in Korea. This study has focused on the evaluation on the effects of thickener operating variables on sludge dewatering, including sludge feed types and retention time. Mixing ratio of the first and the second sludge and operation time were varied in order to observe the change of dewaterability and optimum input of chemical conditioner.
