Industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants produce large amounts of sludge cakes for final disposal. This problem is an inevitable drawback inherent to the activated sludge process. Both the reduction of the amount of sludge produced and improvement of its dewaterability are presently very important issue also in Korea. So many pre-treatment processes have been developed in order to improve sludge dewatering efficiency. In this study the effects of hydrogen peroxide and paper sludge mixing processes were considered as reasonable alternatives to enhance sludge dewaterability. The CST of sludge was significantly decreased, and dewaterability improved by hydrogen peroxide oxidation treatment. The optimum dosage of hydrogen peroxide was proved to be 10mg/g-TS (when TS of sludge was 2%) with the conditions of pH 4 and only 1~2 minutes of reaction time. The mixing of paper sludge with sewage sludge was turned out to be very effective in reduction of sludge cake; 30% of sludge cake reduction was accomplished. Optimum mixing ratio of paper sludge was about 30%(v/v). This process also could save 25% of polymer to be required. These two alternatives are somewhat realistic, but it was concluded that paper sludge mixing process will be the best choice.

The purpose of this study is to suggest the effective operation method by developing prediction model for the gas production rate, an indicator of the effectiveness of anaerobic digestion tank, using data mining. At the result, gas production estimate model is developed by using ANN within 10% error. It is expected to help operation of anaerobic digestion by suggesting selected parameter. Meanwhile case based reasoning is applied to develop dewatering cake management technology. Case based reasoning uses the most similar examples of past when a new problem occurs, therefore in this study, management measures are developed that proposes dewatering cake minimization with the minimum change by applying the case based reasoning to sludge disposal process.
Solubilization pretreatments were conducted to enhance the anaerobic digestion of the waste activated sludge. Four pretreatment techniques including heating, sonication freezing and thawing, and enzyme addition were employed to solubilize the waste activated sludge under various conditions. Thermal pretreatment by heating showed the highest efficiency compared with other methods, and freezing and thawing was confirmed as a feasible alternative of solubilization as well as the pretreatment of dewatering. There is a clear correlation between the solubilization efficiency of the waste activated sludge and the gas production. Batch digestion results showed the cumulative gas production as much as four times after thermal pretreatment as compared with that by the control sludge without pretreatment. As a result, hydrolysis or solubilization pretreatment might play a significant role in the high rate digestion of the waste activated sludge.

The residual treatment facilities in WTP(water treatment plant) play an important role in solid-liquid separation. At present, it is difficult to solve problems related with thickening and dewatering of WTP sludge, and discharging waste water to river. The quantity of residuals generated from water treatment plants depends upon the raw water quality, dosage of chemicals used, performance of the treatment process, method of sludge removal, efficiency of sedimentation, and backwashing frequency. Sludge production by the physical separation of SS(Suspended Solid) occurs under quiescent conditions in the primary clarifier, where SSs are allowed to settle and to consolidate on the clarifier bottom. Raw primary sludge results when the settled solids are hydraulically removed from the tank. In this study, Drawing characteristics of the sludge thickening in the thickener of Water Treatment Plants was simulated by Using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Dewatering is an extremely important step in wastewater treatment process to reduce the final sludge volume in order to minimize the cost of sludge transportation and disposal. In the present study, the effect of different sludge solids content (1, 2 and 3.8%) on the dewaterability of anaerobically digested sludge using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans was studied. The pH reduction rate was higher during initial process in the sludge having low solids content, but after 48 h of bioleaching, similar pH of below 3 was observed with all the different solids content. Bio-oxidation rate of $Fe^{2+}$ was initially higher in sludge with low solids content, but 100% $Fe^{2+}$ was oxidized within 60 h in all the three treatment levels. Compared to the control, specific resistance to filtration was reduced by 75, 78 and 80% in the sludge with a solids content of 1, 2 and 3.8% respectively, showing improvement in dewaterability with an increase in sludge solids content. Sludge effluent quality and sludge settling rate were also improved in treatments with higher solids content after the bioleaching process.

The objective of this study is to examine the effect of the waste oyster shell powder as the addition agent in bulking sludge thickening of paper manufacturing plant using DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) and gravitational sedimentation. The effect of parameters such as dosage and size distribution of oyster shell were examined. The results showed that the optimum dosage of mixed oyster shell(size range : $\sim250{\mu}m$) was 0.8 g/L. The oyster shell addition of 5.0 g/L in sedimentation process was increased thickening concentration of 3.25 times. When 5.0 g/L of oyster shell was added in DAF process, water content of sludge was decreased from 95.5% to 82.7% in dewatering process using Buchner funnel test device. When size of oyster shell was divided four ranges($\sim53{\mu}m$, $53\sim106{\mu}m$, $106\sim150{\mu}m$, $150\sim250{\mu}m$), optimum size range for the flotation and dewatering was $53\sim106{\mu}m$.
The purposes of this paper are to study the use possibility of geotextile tubes for dewatering of high water content sludges and sediments and to evaluate affecting factors on dewatering. To do this, pressure filtration tests are conducted on four high water content materials with two geotextiles under two filtration pressures. Based on the test results, although woven geotextile tubes are not satisfied the soil retention criteria used in filter design commonly, a great portion of fines are retained by filter cake formation on geotextile tube's upstream side, but also after formation of filter cake, the permeability drops sharply. Higher filtration pressure tends to increase dewatering rate, but has very little effect on filtration efficiency. Dewatering capacity is affected by several factors which are related to the geotextile, but the property of sludge appears to be the dominant control factor for dewatering efficiency.
The purposes of this study were to examine applicability of waste egg shells as conditioning agent, to determine the optimum conditions for improving digested sludge dewaterability and to compare with before and after adding them. It estimated that the optimum conditions were dosage 30 g/L, particle size 10mesh, temp. $30^{\circ}C$, pH 7 and dewatering pressure $2.66{\pm}10^4{\;}N/m^2$. On the basis of induced optimum conditions, if adding waste egg shells in digested sludge, its specific resistance was $1.13{\pm}10^{12}{\;}m/kg$ and was low about 3 times than raw digested sludge $3.5{\pm}10^{12}{\;}m/kg $. Therefore, in view of waste recycling, it seemed that we could utilize waste egg shells as conditioning assent for improving dewaterability of digested sludge.

Although fly ash possesses viable engineering properties, an overwhelming majority of fly ash from coal combustion is still placed in storage or disposal sites. Similarly, sludges generated from various water treatment operations are predominantly subjected to the fate of land disposal. To prepare sludges fur land disposal typically requires time consuming dewatering schemes, which can become extremely difficult to execute depending upon the composition of the sludge and its affinity for water. This study was undertaken to reuse fly ash and sludge as construction materials. This paper includes geotechnical properties of fly ash and fly ash-lime-sludge mixture and results of compaction test, UU-test, falling head test, leaching test and CBR test. The effect on mixing fly ash with sludge and lime and the effect of curing period and the results are obtained from this test.
