  • The topographic variables, which influence the precipitation phenomena, are classified by elevation (ELEV), slope (SLOPE), distance to sea (SEA), obstruction (OBST), barrier (BAR), roughness (SHIELD), extracted and analysed according to resolutions. This study is performed through 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 600 m, 800 m and 1,000 m based on 50 m DTM using TOVA (Topographic Variables Extraction Program). The result of a case study on Jeju weather station says that the variance according to resolution is generally less than that according to cardinal direction, but particularly SHIELD values and some cases for 600m resolution have a significant results.

  • An errors-in-variables model (EVM) differs from the classical regression model in that in the former the independent variable is also subject to error. This paper shows that to assess the applicability of the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation procedure to the EVM, the relative dispersion of the independent variable to its error variance must be also considered in addition to Mandel's criterion. The effect of physically reducing the variance of errors in the independent variable on the performance of the OLS slope estimator is also discussed.

  • Many studies have shown that the initial median frequency (MDF) and slope correlate with the muscle fiber composition. This study tested the hypothesis that the initial MDF and slope are fixed, regardless of the interval at which data are collected. MDF data using moving fast Fourier transformation of EMG signals, following local fatigue induced by isotonic exercise, were obtained. An inverse FFT was used to eliminate noise, and characteristic decreasing regression lines were obtained. The regression analysis was done in three different periods, the first one third, first half, and full period, looking at variance in the initial MDF, slope, and fatigue index. Data from surface EMG signals during fatiguing isotonic exercise of the biceps brachii and vastus lateralis in 20 normal subjects were collected. The loads tested were 30% and 60% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) in the biceps brachii and 40% and 80% MVC in the vastus lateralis. The rate was 25 flexions per minute. There were no significant differences in the initial MDF or slope during the early or full periods of the regression, but there was a significant difference in the fatigue index. Therefore, to observe the change in the initial MDF and slope of the MDF regression line during isotonic exercise, this study suggest that only the early interval need to be observed.

  • Until now, most probabilistic approaches to the slope stability analysis have been accomplished on the arc failure surface without load. In this study, the relationships between the probability of failure and the safety factor are investigated when the shape of failure is logarithmic spiral on the homogeneous slope with ground water level, the probability distributions of the load and the strength parameter of soil being assumed as normal distribution, log-normal distribution and beta distribution. The results obtained are as follows; 1. For the same safety factor, the design of slope is more reasonable by using the probability of failure than by the safety factor because the probability of failure is increased as the coefficient of variation is increased. 2, The safety factor is more reasonably determined by the coefficient of variation of the strength parameter than by the field condition when the safety factor is applied to design of slope.

  • BACKGROUND: In this review paper, the effects of surface cover (SCV), vegetative filter strip (VFS), and vegetated ridge (VRD) on the pollutant runoff from steep-sloping uplands were analyzed to compare the pollutant reduction efficiency in runoff ($PRE_{runoff}$) of the practices and to investigate how slope and rainfall parameters affect the $PRE_{runoff}$. METHODS AND RESULTS: The $PRE_{runoff}$ of SCV, VFS, and VRD for pollutants including suspended solids and biological oxygen demand was compared by analysis of variance. The effect of slope and rainfall parameters on the $PRE_{runoff}$ was explored by either mean comparison or regression analysis. It was found that the $PRE_{runoff}$ differs with the practices due to different pollutant reduction mechanisms of the practices. Though the $PRE_{runoff}$ was likely to be affected by site condition such as slope and rainfall (amount and intensity), more comprehensive understanding was not possible due to the limited data set. CONCLUSION: The $PRE_{runoff}$ of SCV, VFS, and VRD differed due to the distinctive mechanisms of pollutant removal of the practices. It is necessary to accumulate experimental data across a variety of gradient of slope and rainfall for comprehensive understanding of the effects of the practices on pollutant runoff from steep-sloping uplands.

  • One proposal is made to construct a nonparametric estimator of slope parameters in a regression model under symmetric error distributions. This estimator is based on the use of the idea of minimizing approximate variance of a proposed estimator using regression quantiles. This nonparametric estimator and some other L-estimators are studied and compared with well known M-estimators through a simulation study.

  • This research is to propose the reinforcing method and design code for the lateral behaviors of the abutment displacement induced from the rainfall infiltration on high landfill slope. First, to make the proper numerical analysis, in-situ soil (weathered granite soil) was taken, and the variance of strength parameters according to water content variance was examined by undrained direct shear test, furthermore, other soil parameters were calculated from the standard penetration test such as elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio etc,. Those parameters were used to calculate the lateral behavior of abutment by finite element method and the member force of pile in high landfill slope according to rainfall infiltration . From the results, the shoe displacement on abutment was calculated as 8.98cm, which is 3 times bigger than the allowable displacement, 3cm. To reinforce it, several reinforcing methods were selected and analyzed such as reinforced retaining wall, soil surcharge, pile reinforcing (5m enlargement, 3-line arrangement, 5m enlargement and 3-line arrangement). In case of 5m enlarged and 3-line arrangement piles, the lateral behavior of shoe showed lower value(2.26 cm) than allowable displacement.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the sedimentation area and runout distance in the downstream when debris flow occurred on a mountain slope through an experimental performance. Super typhoons and torrential rains caused by climate change cause large-scale debris flow disasters in the downstream areas of mountainous areas, mainly where sediments are deposited and flowed downstream. To analyze the characteristics of the sediment deposited downstream, the disposition area and runout distance were investigated through experiments in the case of a straight channel and channel with berm, respectively. As experimental conditions, changes in sediment volume concentration and channel slope, and channel with or without berm, reduction rates in sedimentation area and runout distance were investigated. In the straight channel, the steeper the channel slope and the lower the sedimentation concentration, the sedimentation area and runout distnace were increased. In a channel with berm, the runout distance and sediment area increased as the slope became steeper and the sediment area decreased.

  • In this study, artificial neural network (ANN) and multiple regression (MR) models were developed to predict the critical factor of safety ($F_s$) of the homogeneous finite slopes subjected to earthquake forces. To achieve this, the values of $F_s$ in 5184 nos. of homogeneous finite slopes having different slope, soil and earthquake parameters were calculated by using the Simplified Bishop method and the minimum (critical) $F_s$ for each of the case was determined and used in the development of the ANN and MR models. The results obtained from both the models were compared with those obtained from the calculations. It is found that the ANN model exhibits more reliable predictions than the MR model. Moreover, several performance indices such as the determination coefficient, variance account for, mean absolute error, root mean square error, and the scaled percent error were computed. Also, the receiver operating curves were drawn, and the areas under the curves (AUC) were calculated to assess the prediction capacity of the ANN and MR models developed. The performance level attained in the ANN model shows that the ANN model developed can be used for predicting the critical $F_s$ of the homogeneous finite slopes subjected to earthquake forces.

  • A tissue biosensor for the measurement of dopamine has been constructed by immobilizing the slice of Sprague-Dawley rat liver on $NH_3$-sensing electrode. To overcome the defect of tissue sensors, the maximal velocity of response curve was measured and applied to the Lineweaver-Burk equation instead of the Nernst equation. And then compared the results with those obtained from Nernst equation. When we obtained calibration curves from Nernst equation, there were variances on the slope and the linear range. But from Lineweaver-Burk equation, the scale of variance was small. Response time was reduced from 7~12 minutes to 2~3 minutes.
