In this study, types of rock slope failure are analyzed by considering both joint characteristics investigated on previous landslide regions located at northern part of Mt. Jiri and geographic features of natural slopes deduced from GIS. The landslide prediction map was produced by superposing the frequency ratio layers for the six geographic features including elevation, slope aspect, slope angle, shaded relief, curvature and stream distance, and then the landslide risk map was deduced by combination of the prediction map and the damage map obtained by taking account of humanity factors such as roads and buildings in the study area. According to analysis on geographic features for previous landslide regions, the landslides occurred as following rate: 88% at 330~710 m in elevation, 77.7% at $90{\sim}270^{\circ}$ in slope aspect, 93.9% at $10{\sim}40^{\circ}$ in slope angle, 82.78% at grade3~7 in shaded relief, 86.28% at -5~+5 in curvature, and 82.92% within 400m in stream distance. Approximately 75% of the landslide regions belongs to the region of 'high' or 'very high' grade in the prediction map, and 13.27% of the study area is exposed to 'high risk' of landslide.

Soil erosion was investigated to find out difference in amount of soil eroded from slope land at early stage of young grasses and at later stage with sufficient cover with different slopes. The six experimental plots were formed on 8$^{\circ}$, 10$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$, and 25$^{\circ}$, with 2m width and 20m length located at the Hwak Kok Ri, Chun Sung Gun, Kang Weon Do. The amount of soil eroded and run-off were collected from 1. May 1987. to 30. October 1988, growing with grasses sowed 2. September 1987. The results were as follows : 1. The amount of soil eroded from the plots except 8$^{\circ}$ plot exceeded the allowable soil erosion with 14 ton/ha during the land formuing before establishment of sufficient surface cover with grasses. Therefore, proper soil conservation practice should be recommeneed. 2. The amount of soil eroded increased exponentially with increased slope as 1.24 times for 15$^{\circ}$1.65 times for 20*, and 2.94 times for 25$^{\circ}$, m comparing with standared 10$^{\circ}$ polt. 3. The erosion occurred mainly by high density of rainfall exceeding lOOmm as consecutive precipitation during the raining peried or accompanied by typhoon passing. 4. The significant soil erosion, when the land covering ratio was over 95% after seeding of grass, was recorded only by the single continuous storms over lOOmm of concentrated precpitation, of which amounts were 1/73~/250 of the allowable soil erosion. 5. The amount of soil erosion from the plots with sufficient surface cover with grasses increased as the slope increased however the amounts were small enough to be neglected. 6. Desolation by soil erosion would be minor problem up to the slope of 20$^{\circ}$ when the mountainous area developed to the grassland with sufficient cover. But it could be concerned on the turn to the hare land by the treading of livestocks with the land slope over 25$^{\circ}$. 7. The run-off of rainfall increased by the increament of slope but it was not exponentially increased. 8. The run-off of rainfall after seeding of grass reduced by 20% in comparison with the run-off of rainfall before seeding, which might be due to infiltration of rainfall promoted by the grass roots.
In this study, the rebar rock bolt sensor and GFRP rock bolt sensor, which can be monitored, were embedded in a large model slope, and the behavior of slopes occurred in the early stage of slope collapse was analyzed after performing the field failure test, numerical analysis of the individual element method and finite element method. By comparing and analyzing the field test and numerical analysis results, field applicability of rock slope collapse monitoring on the rebar rock bolt sensor and GFRP rock bolt sensor was investigated. Through this study, smart slope collapse prediction and warning system was developed, which can be used to induce effective evacuation of residents living in the collapsible area by detecting landslide and ground decay precursor information in advance.
Using artificial rainfall simulator, the soil loss, which is deemed as the most cause of muddy water problem among Non-point source (NPS) pollutant, was studied by the analysis of direct runoff, groundwater discharge, and soil water storage properties concerned with rainfall intensity, slope of area, and land cover. The direct runoff showed increasing tendency in both straw covered and bared soil as slope increases from 5% to 20%. The direct runoff volume from straw covered surface were much lower than bared surface. The infiltration capacity of straw covered surface increased, because the surface sealing by fine material of soil surface didn't occur due to the straw covering. Under the same rainfall intensity and slope condition, 2.4~8.2 times of sediment yield were occurred from bared surface more than straw covered surface. The volume of infiltration increased due to straw cover and the direct runoff flow decreased with decrease of tractive force in surface. To understand the relationship of the rate of direct runoff, groundwater discharge, and soil water storage by the rainfall intensity, slope, and land cover, the statistical test was performed. It shows good relationship between most of factors, except between the rate of groundwater storage and rainfall intensity.
A geophysical survey was undertaken at Wiri area, Andong, to delineate subsurface structure and reveal the fault zone nearby which heaving of road and subsidence of slope occurred in 1997, especially in the heavy rainy season. Electrical resistivity methods of dipole-dipole array profiling and Schlumberger array sounding and seismic methods of refraction and reflection were performed for the mapping of clay layer, which was interpreted to be the major factor among the reasons of slope deformation. The clay layer was characterized by lower electrical resistivities (< $100{\Omega}{\cdot}m$) and lower seismic velocities (<400 m/s), respectively. The results of electrical and seismic surveys showed that subsidence of slope was probably associated with sliding of wet clay on 18SW/NNW trending fault plane, while heaving of road was probably caused by upward movement of the wet clay through subvertical NNE trending fault.

Korea has about 70% of its land classified as the mountain area, which has led to cut-slope being the result of substantial road and railway construction. However, there is currently a lack of research about the seismic retrofit design of a slope, even though many earthquakes have recently occurred at home and abroad. In this study, in order to investigate the stabilizing effect of piles against sliding during an earthquake, a series of 1 g shaking table tests and pseudo-static analyses were carried out. As a result, the stabilizing effect of piles against sliding during an earthquake was verified by the 1 g shaking table tests and the most effective result from the pseudo-static analyses was that the installation of the piles on the central part of the slope, where the failure surface included piles unlike the lower part and upper part of the slope. Furthermore, when the pile was installed on the central part of the slope, the change of the safety factor depending on the distance between the center of two piles was evaluated.
At the mudstone slope located on the roadside of the Seokri area in Donghae-myeon, Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, this study was performed to analyze the effects of rainfall on the stability of slope through seepage analysis according to the precipitation type of the mudstone slope, referring to the actual case of slope failure. For this, precise geological survey, geophysical exploration and drilling survey for the slope where the failure occurred were performed and followed by analysis of detailed soil layer. For the section where failure surface located, the durability reduction of rocks was measured through slaking/swelling tests and the permeability was measured through in-situ permeability tests for each soil layer. In addition, the change of strength parameter and process of instability were analyzed by back analysis, using Talren 97 and Slope/W programs, in the slope. By applying different precipitation conditions to the geographical conditions of the slope that had actual failure records, the slope stability was analyzed by seepage analysis according to duration of rainfall and rise of groundwater level resulting from the flow of rainfall caused by development of geological structures and the slope surface condition.
The purpose of this study was to establish the basic information for natural drainage capacity assessment in urban area. We sorted midium watershed of Han river and Nak-dong river, and selected 30 rainfall events during 1995 to 2000 according to high level of damage. The inundated area showed high watershed slope about 25% and it indicated the greatest damage around the watershed located in 200-300m of altitude. Besides, the great damage by inundation was occurred in the mountainous agriculture region, where the forest scale was high and the urbanization was being progressed gradually. However, inundated area was small in case of grassland, water tone such as riparian area, bare ground and wetland. Moreover, the inundated area was different according to river shape and characteristics of river distribution such as the density of the stream order, conservation constant of the river system, and the number of undulations in the watershed. Therefore, it showed that land use, river shape and distribution characteristics of stream influence on inundation.
The effect of stabilizing piles on cut slopes is checked and the behavior of slope soil and piles are observed throughout the year by field measurements on the large-scale cut slopes. First of all, the behavior of the slope soil was measured by inclinometers during slope modification. Landslides occurred in this area due to the soil cutting for slope modification. The horizontal deformations of slope soil are gradually increased and rapidly decreased at depth of sliding surface. As the result of measuring deformation, the depth of sliding surface below the ground surface can be known. Based on the measuring the depth of the sliding surface, some earth retention system including stabilizing piles were designed and constructed in this slope. To check the stability of the reinforced slope using stabilizing piles, an instrumentation system was installed. As the result of instrumentation, the maximum deflection of piles is measured at the pile head. It is noted that the piles deform like deflection on a cantilever beam. The maximum bending stress of piles is measured at the soil layer. The pile above the soil layer is subjected to lateral earth pressure due to driving force of the slope, while pile below soil layer is subjected to subgrade reaction against pile deflection. The deflection of piles is increased during cutting slope in front of piles for the construction of soil nailing. As a result of research, the effect and applicability of stabilizing piles in large-scale cut slopes could be confirmed sufficiently.

In August, 2013, we collected epifaunal megabenthos using a deep sea camera (DSC) around a benthic impact study (BIS) site. This was located in the KR5 block of the Korea Deep Ocean Study (KODOS) area in the Northeastern Pacific. The DSC was positioned at $6.8{\pm}2.9m$ (SD) from the sea bottom and was operated from a position at $131^{\circ}56.85^{\prime}-131^{\circ}55.02^{\prime}W$ for 2.3 h at a speed of 1-2 knot. The geographical features of the study area consisted of two structures; a trough in the middle and hills at the east and west sides. Sediment conditions were consistent within six blocks and were affected by slope and polymetallic nodule deposits. We analyzed 226 megafaunal species. Sipunculida comprised the highest percentage of individuals (39%), and the dominant epifaunal megabenthos were Hormathiidae sp., Primnoidae sp., Hexactinellida sp., Hyphalaster inermis, Freyella benthophila, Paelopatides confundens, Psychropotes longicauda, and Peniagone leander. More than 80% of the total density of megafauna occurred on sea plain (D- and E-blocks). We found two distinct groups in the community, one located on sea plains and the other along both sides of the sea slop. Our results suggest that geographical features such as slope and polymetalic nodule deposits are important in controlling the distribution of the epifaunal megabenthos around the KODOS area.
