The shear strength reduction finite element method (SSRFEM) is a powerful tool for slope stability analysis. The factor of safety (FOS) of the slope can be easily calculated only through reducing effective cohesion (c′) and tangent of effective friction angle ($tan{\varphi}^{\prime}$) in equal proportion. However, this method may not be applicable to soil slope under wetting-drying cycles (WDCs), because the influence of WDCs on c′ and $tan{\varphi}^{\prime}$ may be different. To research the method of estimating FOS of soil slopes under WDCs, this paper presents an experimental study firstly to investigate the effects of WDCs on the parameters of shear strength and stiffness. Twelve silty clay samples were subjected to different number of WDCs and then tested with triaxial test equipment. The test results show that WDCs have a degradation effect on shear strength (${\sigma}_1-{\sigma}_3)_f$, secant modulus of elasticity ($E_s$) and c′ while little influence on ${\varphi}^{\prime}$. Hence, conventional SSRFEM which reduces c′ and $tan{\varphi}^{\prime}$ in equal proportion cannot be adopted to compute the FOS of slope under conditions of WDCs. The SSRFEM should be modified. In detail, c′ is merely reduced among shear strength parameters, and elasticity modulus is reduced correspondingly. Besides, a new approach based on sudden substantial changes in the displacement of marked nodes is proposed to identify the slope failure in SSRFEM. Finally, the modified SSRFEM is applied to compute the FOS of a slope example.

Rainfall-induced slope failures were simulated by seepage and stability analyses for actual slopes of weathered soils. After undisturbed sampling and testing on a specimen of unsaturated conditions, a seepage analysis was performed under actual rainfall and it was found that the pore water pressure increased at the boundary of soil and rock layers. The safety factor of slope stability decreased below 1.0 and the failure of actual slope could be simulated. Under design rainfall intensity, the seepage analysis could not include the effects of the antecedent rainfall and the rainfall duration. Due to these limitations, the safety factor of slope stability resulted in above 1.0, since the hydraulic head of soil layers had not be affected significantly. In the analysis of another slope failure, the parameters of unsaturated conditions were evaluated using artificial neural network (ANN). In the analysis of seepage, the boundary of soil and rock was saturated sufficiently and then the safety factor could be calculated below 1.0. It was found that the failure of actual slope can be simulated by ANN-based estimation.

An explicit surface potential calculation method of gate-all-around MOSFET (GAAMOSFET) devices which takes into account both interface trap charge and varying doping levels is presented. The results of the method are extensively verified by numerical simulation. Results from the model are used to find qualitative and quantitative effect of interface trap charge on subthreshold slope (SS) of GAAMOSFET devices. Further, design constraints of GAAMOSFET devices with emphasis on the effect of interface trap charge on device SS performance are investigated.
The safety factor of an infinite slope tends to be analyzed as lower when the effects of root cohesion are not considered into the equation. Thus, it is essential to consider regional characteristics such as root cohesion and crown density in order to obtain a reasonable safety factor value. In this study, The safety factor of the landslide model, both before and after considering crown density and root cohesion, was calculated and a comparative analysis was carried out. The safety factor is increased by the effect of roots cohesion of the analysis results, the amount of increase in safety factor along the inclination of the slope angle has been analyzed with various things, the effect of reinforcing the roots cohesion, slope of the lower angle it was found that the higher the safety factor increase.
Coastal circulations during the (surface condition of an) idealized cold-air outbreak are numerically investigated with two-dimensional, non-hydrostatic model in which a constant bottom-slope exists. The atmospheric forcing during a cold-air outbreak is incorporated as the surface cooling and the wind stress. When the offshore angle of the wind-stress vector, defined as the angle measured from the alongshore axis, is smaller than 45 degrees, a strong downwelling circulation develops near the coast. A sharp density front, which separates the vertically homogeneous region from the offshore stratified region, is formed near the coast and propagates offshore with time. Onshore side of the density front, small-scale circulation cells which are aligned in the direction perpendicular to the bottom begin to develop as the near-coast homogeneous region broadens. The surface cooling enhances greatly the development of the surface mixed layer by convective motions due to hydrostatic instability. The convective motions reach far below the hydrostatically unstable layer which is attached to the surface. The small-scale circulation cells are appreciably modified by the convetion cell and the density front develops far offshore compared to the case of no surface cooling. As to the effect of the bottom slope, the offshore distance of the density front increases (decreases) as the bottom slope decreases (increases), which results from the fact that the onshore volume-transport (Ekman transport) of the low-density upper seawater remains almost constant when the wind-stress is maintained constant. It is shown that the bottom slope is an essential factor for the formation of both the density front and the alongshore current when the surface cooling is the only forcing.
In Korea, there are many regulations and cases for horizontal seismic coefficient to pseudo-static analysis of slope, but there are insufficient regulations and cases for vertical seismic coefficient. Therefore, geological investigation and laboratory tests were conducted to analyze the effect of the vertical seismic coefficient on slope stability, and pseudo-static analyses based on infinite slope stability analysis were performed by using those results. As a result, if the earthquake magnitude is less than M 5.0, the effect of the vertical seismic coefficient is not significant, and if the earthquake magnitude is more than M 6.0, the vertical seismic coefficient largely increases the unstable areas of Fs ≤ 1.1. These tendency is more distinct in rainfall condition than without rainfall condition.

Korea has about 70% of its land classified as the mountain area, which has led to cut-slope being the result of substantial road and railway construction. However, there is currently a lack of research about the seismic retrofit design of a slope, even though many earthquakes have recently occurred at home and abroad. In this study, in order to investigate the stabilizing effect of piles against sliding during an earthquake, a series of 1 g shaking table tests and pseudo-static analyses were carried out. As a result, the stabilizing effect of piles against sliding during an earthquake was verified by the 1 g shaking table tests and the most effective result from the pseudo-static analyses was that the installation of the piles on the central part of the slope, where the failure surface included piles unlike the lower part and upper part of the slope. Furthermore, when the pile was installed on the central part of the slope, the change of the safety factor depending on the distance between the center of two piles was evaluated.
Background: Abandoned coal piles after the closure of mines have a potential negative influence on the environment, such as soil acidification and heavy metal contamination. Therefore, revegetation by efficient species is required. For this, we wanted to identify the role of Silene acaulis in the succession of coal piles as a pioneer and a nurse plant. S. acaulis is a well-studied cushion plant living in the Arctic and alpine environments in the northern hemisphere. It has a highly compact cushion-like form and hosts more plant species under its canopy by ameliorating stressful microhabitats. In this research, we surveyed vegetation cover on open plots and co-occurring species within S. acaulis cushions in coal piles with different slope aspects and a control site where no coal was found. The plant cover and the similarity of communities among sites were compared. Also, the interaction effects of S. acaulis were assessed by rarefaction curves. Results: S. acaulis was a dominant species with the highest cover (6.7%) on the coal piles and occurred with other well-known pioneer species. Plant communities on the coal piles were significantly different from the control site. We found that the pioneer species S. acaulis showed facilitation, neutral, and competition effect in the north-east facing slope, the south-east facing slope, and the flat ground, respectively. This result was consistent with the stress gradient hypothesis because the facilitation only occurred on the north-east facing slope, which was the most stressed condition, although all the interactions observed were not statistically significant. Conclusions: S. acaulis was a dominant pioneer plant in the succession of coal piles. The interaction effect of S. acaulis on other species depended on the slope and its direction on the coal piles. Overall, it plays an important role in the succession of coal piles in the High Arctic, Svalbard.

The present paper studies the effect of the slope gradient of a fully permeable submerged breakwater using a newly developed numerical model that is able to consider the flow through a porous midium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance terms, i.e. simulate directly WAve-Structure (submerged breakwater)-Sand seabed interaction and can determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulence model in 2-Dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-2D). The developed model was validated through the comparison with an existing experimental data, and further used for various numerical experiments in oder to investigate the complicated hydrodynamics on the varying slope gradient of permeable submerged breakwater. We found an acceptable phenomenon, as we expect intuitively, that reflection and transmission coefficients decrease simultaneously as slope gradient decrease. In addition, the breaking point, the circulation flow and mean vorticity around a submerged breakwater are throughly discussed.

In general the stability of soil nail-slope system, the shear resistance is neglected because the tensile resistance of nail acts mainly for slope stabilization. This is because that deformed steel is generally used for nail and it does ductile behavior. In other side when the steel pipe with high rigidity is used for nail, the shear resistance at failure surface work more than deformed steel. In order to analyze effects of shear resistance at the soil nail-slope system with high steel piped nail, a series of numerical analyses were performed. Also numerical analyses at 3 conditions - 5 nailed, 7 nailed, 9 nailed at the same slope were perfomed for investigating the trend of shear resistance effect. From these 3D numerical analyses, it was found that the maximum shear resistances at each nails were larger in case of steel piped nail and because of this, the factor of safety at the condition of the steel piped nail appears larger than that of deformed steel nail.
