  • Slope stability is affected by duration of precipitation, probable rainfall intensity, unsaturated soil property, and soil strength. The recent analyses of slope stability tend to include unsaturated analysis based on infiltration properties of soil, while researches of unsaturated soil slope tend to include the analysis of deformation and stress distribution of soil over time. However, infiltration property of unsaturated soil slope depends not only on intensity or duration of precipitation, but also on relief and surface condition, which is not considered in status quo. This research uses hydrologic model parameters of soil in order to consider effects of inclination on filtration, and carries out analysis of unsaturated soil slope to confirm the effects according to slope inclination and surface condition. In conclusion, using slope stability analysis, the need to consider infiltration rate according to inclination and surface condition was confirmed even under the same precipitation conditions.

  • The purpose of this study is the stability evaluation of soil slope according to inclination of upper natural slope. Upper natural slope breeds loss of slope by inflow in slope of surface water by rainfal1 and f1uctuation of amount of materials in slope through method of cutting slope according to degree of inclination. Basis of standard inclination does not consider of inclination of upper natural slope and is presented uniformly. Therefore, in this study, analyzed stability of inclination of upper natural slope through limit equilibrium analysis. Result is same as following. First, safety factor through limit equilibrium analysis is almost direct decrease when gradient of soil slope is 1:1.2, 1:1.5. However, when gradient of soil slope is 1:1.0, 1:0.7, if sinclination of upper natural slope are $20^{\circ}$, it shows tendency that decrease of safety factor becomes low rapidly. Second, when when gradient of soil slope is fixed, inclination of upper natural slope increase tendency(maximum 3.0 times) that decrease of safety factor.

  • The length of study area was about 450m, and it was shown the geological condition of distinguished change of rock by cutting slope. In order to establish a slope stability, we carried out an engineering geological investigations about rock constituent, rock structure and a direction of discontinuous plane. The study area was divided into six section considered by direction of cutting slope, height of slope and geological condition. Analysis of cutting slope stability was carried out with stereo-graphic projection method by DIPS program which was feasible of stability analysis with geometrical correlation for a direction of discontinuous plane and direction of cutting slope. From analysis of cutting slope stability considered by construction, stability and economical efficiency, the slope stability countermeasures such as a high tensile wire net, slope protection method and enhanced retaining wall were established and operated which minimized effect caused by lower end of road on a relaxation of huge rock.

  • Intensive rainfall during the summer season in Korea has triggered numerous devastating landslides outside of downtown in mountainous areas. The 2D slope stability analysis that is generally used for cut slopes and embankments is inadequate to model slope failure in mountainous areas. This paper presents a new 3D slope stability formulation using the global sliding vector in the limit equilibrium method, and it uses an ellipsoidal slip surface for static and quasi-static analyses. The slip surface's flexibility of the ellipsoid shape gives a lower FS than the spherical failure shape in the Fellenius, Bishop, and Janbu's simplified methods. The increasing sub-columns of each column tend to increase the FS and converge to a steady value. The symmetrical geometric conditions of the convex turning corners do not indicate symmetrical failure of the surface in 3D analysis. Pseudo-static analysis shows that the horizontal seismic force decreases the FS and increases the mass volume at the critical failure state. The stability index takes the FS and corresponding sliding mass into consideration to assess the potential risk of slope failure in complex mountainous terrain. It is a valuable parameter for selecting a vulnerable area and evaluating the overall risk of slope failure.

  • Conventional slope stability analysis is focused on calculating minimum factor of safety or maximum probability of failure. To minimize inherent uncertainty of soil properties and analytical model and to reflect various analytical models and its failure shape in slope stability analysis, slope stability analysis method considering simultaneous failure probability for multi failure mode was proposed. Linear programming recently introduced in system reliability analysis was used for calculation of simultaneous failure probability. System reliability analysis for various analytical models could be executed by this method. For application analysis for embankment, the results of this method shows that system stability of embankment calculate quantitatively.

  • Stability analysis based on the limit equilibrium method combined with the result of infiltration analysis is commonly used to evaluate the effect of rainfall infiltration on the slope stability. Soil is a three-phase mixture composed of solid particle, water and air. Therefore, a fully coupled mixture theories of stress-deformation behavior and the flow of water and air should be used to accurately analyze the process of rainfall infiltration through soil slope. The purpose of this study is to study the effect of interaction of air and water flow on the mechanical stability of slope. In this study, stability analyses based on the coupled hydro-mechanical model of three-phases were conducted for slope of weathered granite soil widespread in Korea. During the process of hydro-mechanical analysis strength reduction technique was applied to evaluate the effect of rainfall infiltration on the slope stability. The results showed an increase of air pressure during infiltration because rain water continuously displaced the air in the unsaturated zone. Such water-air interaction in the pore space of soil affects the stress-deformation behavior of slope. Therefore, the results from the three-phase model showed different behavior from the solid-water model that ignores the transport effect of air in the pores.

  • This paper describes a new numerical analysis technique in stability analysis for a slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails. The installing effect of pressure grouted soil nails can be simulated in this method. Shear strength reduction method associated with finite element method is used for slope stability analysis. Factors of safety for a slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails are compared with those for a natural slope and a slope reinforced with gravity grouted soil nails in order to investigate their reinforcing effects. More than 50% increase in the factor of safety is obtained when the slope is reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails compared to the one with gravity grouted soil nails. The reinforcing effects of pressure grouted soil nails become obvious with increase in their length. The reinforcing mechanism of the pressure grouted soil nails for the slope stability can be explained by the slope failure surface expanding gradually toward the backfill. The increased stability of the slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails results mainly from their improved pull-out resistance.

  • In general, it has been usually used the method that assess rock slope stability using stereographic projection method, limit equilibrium analysis, numerical analysis and slope stability evaluation table. Several methods for assessing the stability of rock slopes has been proposed on the basis of site investigation data. These method adopted different evaluation items and weighting factors by researchers, organization and nation. But the researches for each evaluation items were insufficient. So the effectiveness of rock slope stability evaluation items for geometrical configuration (slope height, slope direction and angle, dip and dip direction of major discontinuity, absolute value for the direction difference for slope and major discontinuities) and topographical characteristic (possibility of topographical water concentration, upper natural slope angle, slope configuration) using 315 failure and stable highway rock slope analysis data, AV (abnormal value) analysis and NMAV (normalized maximum abnormal value) analysis were evaluated.

  • This paper deal with the stability evaluation and suggestion of progressive failure slope in biotite granite area of Andong. Based on geological site investigation and field test, stability analysis of slope was performed in conjunction with limit equilibrium methods and stereographic projection. Additionally, initial design and construction procedure was critically evaluated. Series of the slope stability analysis reveals the detection of local wedge and plane failure under the current slope condition. It is additionally appeared that a certain synthetic behavior of circle and plane failure exists on the right spot where the overall failure's going in progress. In order to construct more stable slope based on the suitability for the real state of the slope circumstances, this study issues a solution to eliminate the primary factors which cause the instability, by means of the grade of weathering and RMR classification of rock mass.
