Residual shear strength should be taken into consideration as well as peak one when analysing stability of slopes constituted by weathered rock or overconsolidated soils since such materials could be subjected to progressive failure mechanism. When landslide of a slope is related to progressive failure phenomenon, the failure might occur even though shear strength of the slope materials does not reach their residual shear strength over the whole slip surface. Therefore, stability of the slope concerned may be overstimated or underestimated when using only its peak or residual shear srength parameters. Mechanical description for progressive failure phenomenon is given by Bjerrum(1967). In parameters. Mechanical description for progressive failure phenomenon is given by Bjerrum(1967). In this study, his theory has been extended to estimate the distance of failed zone for a plane slope and the results calculated by this extended equatio has been compared with that obtained by numerical modelling using FLAC. In addition, stress state on the slip surface has been, in detail, analysed to understand failure mechanism when a limited progressive failure occurs. Effects of mechanical and hydraulic factors on progressive failure have also been analysed.
A mathematical model for cold rolling and temper rolling process of thin steel strip has been developed using the influence function method. By solving the equations describing roll gap phenomena in a unique procedure and considering more influence factors, the model offers significant improvements in accuracy, robustness and generality of the solution for the thin strip cold and temper rolling conditions. The relationship between the shape of the roll profile and the roll force is also discussed. Calculation results show that any change increasing the roll force may result in or enlarge the central flat region in the deformation zone. Applied to the temper rolling process, the model can well predict not only the rolling load but also the large forward slip. Therefore, the measured forward slip, together with the measured roll force, was used to calibrate the model. The model was installed in tile setup computer of a temper rolling mill to make parallel setup calculations. The calculation results show good agreement with the measured data and the validity and precision of the model are proven.
Yangsan fault in the southeastern part of Korean peninsula has been locally reactivated along a prexisted fault during the late Pleistocene time. Geomorphological evidence of the reactivation is revealed at the northern segment(Yugye-ri, Tosung-ri areas) of the Yangsan fault. The reactivation is distinctively characterized by fault gouge and fracture zone with high frequency in the Yugye-ri area. Obique slip separation of the area is about three meters of the middle terrace. The cumulative vertical displacement is recognized after the formation of the middle terrace. Age of the reactivated faulting is constrained to during the formation of dissected valley deposits. Average vertical slip based on paleo-event is inferred to about 0.5-0.7 meter in this area.
Theoretical equations for an influence of fiber breaks on the frictional heating phenomenon in a uniaxially fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composite are formulated. The microslip and gross slip phases are considered for deriving the equations. During a complete loading/unloading cycle, the work done against friction is derived. In order to estimate interfacial shear in a unidirectionally reinforced ceramic matrix composite which has fiber fractures as well as matrix cracks, parametric studies using the derived equations are done. In a case of less than 10% fiber fractures, additional frictional work due to fiber breaks can be neglected compared to the rest.
The fatigue test under the constant amplitude repeated loading is performed to investigate the fatigue behavior of the Torque Shear type high tension bolted joint which is able to manage the axial force uniformly. From the test results, it's known that the reduction of the axial force of T/S bolt followed by the elasped time is similar to that of the high tension bolts. The difference of relaxation is not occurred according to the position of bolts, the size of the introduced axial force but the effect of the variation of temperature is large. In the reduction of the axial force followed by the cumulation of the fatigue load, the outer bolt is larger than the inner bolt. This result depends on the difference in the distribution of the non-slip zone. The variation of the surface roughness affects the slip and the reduction of the anal force.
We propose an adaptive nonlinear control algorithm for compensation of the stick-slip friction in a dynamic system. The friction force and mass of the system are estimated and compensated by adaptive control law. Especially, as the nonlinear control input in a small tracking error zone is enlarged by the nonlinear function, the steady state error is significantly reduced. The proposed algorithm is a direct adaptive control method based on the Laypunov stability theory, and its convergence is guaranteed under the bounded noise or torque disturbance. We verified the performance of the proposed algorithm by computer simulation on one-DOF mechanical system with friction.
Islanding phenomenon is undesirable because it lead to a safety hazard to utility service personnel and may cause damage to power generation and power supply facilities as a result of unsynchronized reclosure. In order to prevent this phenomenon, various anti-islanding methods have been studied. Even though the slip mode frequency shift (SMS) method has been regarded as a highly effective anti-islanding method, the analytical design method of that was not cleared. This paper proposes a modeling of the SMS method using non-detection zone (NDZ) and evaluation of the method according to the test conditions of IEEE Std. 929-2000. The SMS method is derived analytically through the modeling and verified visually by simulation and experiment.
Ductile shear zones developed in Jurassic granites in the Yonggwang area show NE trend at the eastern part and nearly EW trend at the western part, respectively. Judged from shear sense indicators, they have resulted from dextral strike-slip movement. The intersection of both trends is thought to be due to the truncation and offset of NE shear zone Chonju Shear zone by the brittle Yonggwang fault which runs in near EW direction with sinistral movement sense. The simple shear deformation was predominate through the deformation in this ductile shear zone. Based on this deformation mechanism, the shear strain (${\gamma}$) estimated in domain 1 increases from 0.14 at the shear zone margin to 9.41 toward the center of shear zone. Total displacement obtained only from this measured section(JK 59 to JK14) appecars to be 1434.5 meters. The sequential development of microstructures can be divided into three stages; weakly-foliated, well-foliated and banded-foliated stages. In the weakly-foliated stage dislocation glide mechanism might be predominant. In the well-foliated stage grain boundary migration and progressive misorientation of subgrains was remarkable during dynamic recovery and recrystallization. In the banded-foliated stage grain boundary sliding and microfracturing mechanisms accompanied with crushing and cracking were marked. According to strain analysis from quartzites of the metasedimentary rocks, strain intensity (${\gamma}$) of the samples within the ductile shear zone ranges from 2.7 to 5.7, while that of the samples out of the ductile shear zone appears to be about 1.7.
This paper describes an optimal design of electric snow melting mat on vulnerable walk zone. In order to design an optimal electric power of snow melting mat and protect pedestrians with a nonslip mat, with considering protection of environmental pollution from abusing of the de-icing salts added calcium chloride. We analyzed nine snow melting mats through verification experiment in the condition of $-5^{\circ}C$, depending on three different kinds of heating material, electric heating cable, carbon heating film and carbon textile film. As a consequence, the $150W/m^2$ carbon textile film mat for snow melting was identified as an optimal power input and functional performance for pedestrians' safety on vulnerable walk zone. It is expected that the $150W/m^2$ carbon textile film mat would be useful to reduce slip down accidents by human error.
