Lumbar spine 의 뼈와 Interbody cage의 접촉면에서 기계공학적 민감성 고찰 (The Mechanical Sensitivity at Interfaces between Bone and Interbody Cage of Lumbar Spine Segments)

  • 뼈의 성장에 미치는 많은 요소들 중에서 implant의 상대적인 미세운동(relative micromotion)은 뼈의 implant와의 접합을 방해하는 것으로 알려져 왔다. 그런데 이러한 상대적인 운동 및 spinal stability에 직접적으로 영향을 주는 하중조건, spinal material의 물성치, spinal geometry 및 뼈와 implant의 접촉면에서의 마찰계수를 고려하기 위하여, 하나의 titanium interbody cage 가 삽입된 human lumbar segments (L4-L5)의 유한요소 모델이 개발되었다. 이러한 유한요소 모델의 해석을 통하여 상대적인 미세운동, Posterior의 수직적인 변위, von Mises 응력 및 마찰력이 예측되었다. Cancellous bone. annulus fibers 및 ligaments의 기계적인 물성치의 감소 또는 접촉면에서의 마찰계수의 감소는 상대적인 미세운동 (relative micromotion or slip distance)을 증가 시켰다. 접촉면에서의 normal force는 뼈의 밀도 (cancellous bone density) 가 감소하거나 접촉마찰계수가 증가하면 감소했다. 특히 하중조건에 있어서, compressive preload에 대한 torsion의 추가는 접촉면의 anterior부위에서 상대적인 미세운동을 증가 시켰다. 하지만 디스크면적이 증가할수록 상대적인 미세운동은 감소했다. 결론적으로, 접촉면의 기계공학적 거동 (Relative micromotion, stress response, posterior axial displacement and contact normal force)은 접촉면의 마찰계수 뼈의 밀도, 하중조건 및 노화에 따른 형상/물성의 변화에 매우 민감함을 보이고있다.

Rolling Test Simulation of Sea Transport of Spent Nuclear Fuel Under Normal Transport Conditions

  • In this study, the impact load resulting from collision with the fuel rods of surrogate spent nuclear fuel (SNF) assemblies was measured during a rolling test based on an analysis of the data from surrogate SNF-loaded sea transportation tests. Unfortunately, during the sea transportation tests, excessive rolling motion occurred on the ship during the test, causing the assemblies to slip and collide with the canister. Hence, we designed and conducted a separate test to simulate rolling in sea transportation to determine whether such impact loads can occur under normal conditions of SNF transport, with the test conditions for the fuel assembly to slide within the basket experimentally determined. Rolling tests were conducted while varying the rolling angle and frequency to determine the angles and frequencies at which the assemblies experienced slippage. The test results show that slippage of SNF assemblies can occur at angles of approximately 14° or greater because of rolling motion, which can generate impact loads. However, this result exceeds the conditions under which a vessel can depart for coastal navigation, thus deviating from the normal conditions required for SNF transport. Consequently, it is not necessary to consider such loads when evaluating the integrity of SNFs under normal transportation conditions.

  • Two-dimensional elastic contact problems, including normal, tangential, and rolling contacts, are treated with the finite element method in this study. Stress boundary conditions and kinematic conditions are transformed into multiple point constraints for nodal displacements in the finite element method. Upon imposing these constraints into the finite element system equations, the calculated nodal stresses and nodal displacements satisfy stress and displacement contact conditions exactly. Frictional and frictionless contacts between elastically identical as well as elastically dissimilar materials are treated in this study. The contact lengths, sizes of slip and stick regions, the normal and the shear stresses can be found.

Shearing Conditions on the Interface of a Spherical Water Drop Sinking in Silicone Oil

  • This paper deals with the experiment to obtain quantitative information about conditions of the interface between a water drop and surrounding oil. Velocity distributions in very close region of the interface are measured by introducing a new illumination technique and a telecentric lens. It enables precise measurements of velocity distributions in the close region to the interface. Although the measured velocity distributions exhibit strong influence from the solid wall of an experimental tube, the coincidence of inner and outside velocities on the interface is clearly confirmed for the clean interface. The shearing stresses on the interface, which are proportional to the velocity gradient normal to the interface, clearly show conditions of contaminated interface, which can be divided into two parts. From front stagnation point to somewhere near a separation point, the distribution of shearing stresses is well coincide with that of the Hadamard's analytical solution, while the distribution on the latter part of the interface sows quite different feature, which is supposed to be strongly influenced by contamination of the surface.

  • A Knowledge of friction force in pneumatic cylinders makes it possible to improve cylinder description during simulation and to asses performance under changing operating conditions more accurately. Such knowledge is particularly useful, for example, when modeling continuous pneumatic positioning systems or predicting the operating conditions under which stick slip may occur, as well as in establishing preventive maintenance procedures for pneumatic cylinders. Friction force depends on a number of factors, including operating pressure, seal running speed on the cylinder barrel and rod, barrel material and surface roughness, seal dimensions and profile, seal material, lubrication conditions, cylinder distortion during assembly, and the operating temperature of cylinder components. This paper shows a system for measuring the friction force caused by a seal used in pneumatic cylinders. Results of experimental tests show that seal friction forces for grease lubricated service are clearly dependent on speed and pressure and are les sensitivity to other parameter. i.e., barrel material and roughness, seal material, and profile.

Analytical modelling of multilayer beams with compliant interfaces

  • Different mathematical models are proposed and their analytical solutions derived for the analysis of linear elastic Reissner's multilayer beams. The models take into account different combinations of contact plane conditions, different material properties of individual layers, different transverse shear deformations of each layer, and different boundary conditions of the layers. The analytical studies are carried out to evaluate the influence of different contact conditions on the static and kinematic quantities. A considerable difference of the results between the models is obtained.

  • In this study, a aerodynamic loads prediction to design a deploying device of folded fin was introduced. In general, resultant flow conditions around the fin are used to obtain deploying moments and required energy. However, when it comes to the air vehicles launched from a mobile platform, more specific flow conditions can be provided. With the conditions, the design criteria can be calculated more realistically. In this study, therefore, aerodynamic moments induced by aerodynamic loads and energy required in deployment were calculated using wind-over-deck(WOD) velocity, combination of a platform velocity and a wind velocity. For the calculation, wind tunnel test was conducted on various angle of attack, side slip angles, and folding angles. It was found that the aerodynamic moments and the energy required in deployment using the non-uniform flow due to the velocity components were less than those using the uniform flow without the components.

Change of Fractured Rock Permeability due to Thermo-Mechanical Loading of a Deep Geological Repository for Nuclear Waste - a Study on a Candidate Site in Forsmark, Sweden

  • Opening of fractures induced by shear dilation or normal deformation can be a significant source of fracture permeability change in fractured rock, which is important for the performance assessment of geological repositories for spent nuclear fuel. As the repository generates heat and later cools the fluid-carrying ability of the rocks becomes a dynamic variable during the lifespan of the repository. Heating causes expansion of the rock close to the repository and, at the same time, contraction close to the surface. During the cooling phase of the repository, the opposite takes place. Heating and cooling together with the, virgin stress can induce shear dilation of fractures and deformation zones and change the flow field around the repository. The objectives of this work are to examine the contribution of thermal stress to the shear slip of fracture in mid- and far-field around a KBS-3 type of repository and to investigate the effect of evolution of stress on the rock mass permeability. In the first part of this study, zones of fracture shear slip were examined by conducting a three-dimensional, thermo-mechanical analysis of a spent fuel repository model in the size of 2 km $\times$ 2 km $\times$ 800 m. Stress evolutions of importance for fracture shear slip are: (1) comparatively high horizontal compressive thermal stress at the repository level, (2) generation of vertical tensile thermal stress right above the repository, (3) horizontal tensile stress near the surface, which can induce tensile failure, and generation of shear stresses at the comers of the repository. In the second part of the study, fracture data from Forsmark, Sweden is used to establish fracture network models (DFN). Stress paths obtained from the thermo-mechanical analysis were used as boundary conditions in DFN-DEM (Discrete Element Method) analysis of six DFN models at the repository level. Increases of permeability up to a factor of four were observed during thermal loading history and shear dilation of fractures was not recovered after cooling of the repository. An understanding of the stress path and potential areas of slip induced shear dilation and related permeability changes during the lifetime of a repository for spent nuclear fuel is of utmost importance for analysing long-term safety. The result of this study will assist in identifying critical areas around a repository where fracture shear slip is likely to develop. The presentation also includes a brief introduction to the ongoing site investigation on two candidate sites for geological repository in Sweden.

  • In this paper, we propose an auto-tuning control algorithm for a mobile robot. This controller consists of a three layer neural networks and a PID controller. In order to compensate for uncertainties from unknown dynamics and ignored dynamic effects such as slip conditions, neural network based position schemes are proposed. The results of simulations show the validity of proposed method. This controller learns quickly the model and has good position control performance.

  • For the high speed drive of induction machine, Thyristor inverter utilizing line and device commutation is proposed. By investigating the load commutation conditions, the possible area of commutation is clearly shown. And from the above results, starting method under the constant slip frequency, is suggested.
