  • Based on the bubble coalescence adjacent to the heated wall as a flow structure for CHF condition, Chang and Lee developed a mechanistic critical heat flux (CHF) model for subcooled flow boiling. In this paper, improvements of Chang-Lee model are implemented with more solid theoretical bases for subcooled and low-quality flow boiling in tubes. Nedderman-Shearer's equations for the skin friction factor and universal velocity profile models are employed. Slip effect of movable bubbly layer is implemented to improve the predictability of low mass flow. Also, mechanistic subcooled flow boiling model is used to predict the flow quality and void fraction. The performance of the present model is verified using the KAIST CHF database of water in uniformly heated tubes. It is found that the present model can give a satisfactory agreement with experimental data within less than 9% RMS error.

  • The most important factor of the traffic accident on the wet road is a tire slip caused by hydroplaning. Meanwhile, hydroplaning characteristics are influenced very greatly by the vehicle velocity, so it is very important to reveal the relation between hydroplaning and the vehicle velocity. Since the experiment study is considerably limited, recently the numerical simulation using finite element method(FEM) and finite volume method(FVM) is widely adopted. In this paper, the effect of the vehicle velocity on the hydroplaning characteristics is investigated through the hydroplaning analysis using MSC/Dytran.

  • Flow patterns were measured in an unshrouded centrifugal impeller. The flow rate in measurements was fixed at the value corresponding to a nearly zero incidence at the blade inlet. By using a single slanted hot-wire probe and a Kiel probe mounted on the impeller hub disk, the 3-D relative velocities and the rotary stagnation pressures were measured in seven circumferential planes from the inlet to the outlet of the impeller rotating at 700rpm, which diameter is 0.39 meter, and the static pressures and the slip factor at the impeller outlet were calculated from the measured values. From the measured data, the primary/secondary flows, the leakage flows, the wake-jet flows, static pressure distribution on blade surfaces and the wake production mechanism in the impeller passage were investigated.

  • In order to provide the basic data for planning of housing safety, the actual conditions of home accidents were analyzed. As research data, the medical charts of patients on the general hospital in the large city in two years 1987 and 1992 were used. The rate of home accidents increased in 1992. Children had more accidents than others and single family dwellings were the predominant place of accidents. The accidents slip frequently occured(21.1%), with respect to the place, room was the main place of accidents(40.5%), the accidents in a living room and a kitchen increased in 1992. 59.2% of the total patients were slightly injured, the faulty design was the main cause of the accidents and the acciednts by the personal factor increased in 1992. In the next study(III), I'm going to analyze the relationships among types of accidents, places of accidents, defrees of accidents, causes of accidents, and the personal characteristics of patients.

  • This paper deals with the control strategy for the constant voltage, constant frequency (CVCF) generation of doubly -fed induction generator. Since induction machine is a nonlinear and multivariable one, the influential factors for CVCF generation of induction generator are the magnitude of output voltage, load current and its power factor, slip of the machine, etc. To get appropriate control scheme and study the effect of its parameters, the control equation of induction machine is derived and tested. The simulation and test results show that suggested equation and control system are very useful strategy for the CVCF control of induction generator.

  • In this paper, control schemes are proposed for a propulsion system(Converter/Inverter) of the TTX(Tilting Train express). In developed traction converter, unity power factor control, compensation method of dc link voltage have been applied. Output current of converter contains harmonics ripple at twice input ac line frequency, which causes a ripple in the dc link voltage so that control scheme is developed in inverter system to reduce the pulsating torque current. At low speed region, vector control scheme is applied and slip frequency control is adopted at high speed region. The performance of propulsion system will be verified by simulation and prototype experimental results.

  • Particle transport and deposition characteristics on semiconductor wafers inside the chamber were experimentally investigated via a particle generation & deposition system and a wafer surface scanner. Especially the relation between particle size($0.083{\sim}0.495{\mu}m$) and particle deposition velocity with ESA(Electrostatic Attraction) effect was studied. Spot deposition technique with the deposition system using nozzle type outlets of the chamber was newly conducted to derive particle deposition velocity and all experiment results were compared with the previous study and were in a good agreement as well.

  • In practice, the natural slopes are frequently with soils of spatial properties and irregular features. The traditional limit analysis method meets an inherent difficulty to deal with the stability problem for such slopes due to the normal condition in the associated flow rule. To overcome the problem, a novel technique based on the upper bound limit analysis, which is called the discretization technique, is employed for the stability evaluation of complex slopes. In this paper, the discretization mechanism for complex slopes was presented, and the safety factors of several examples were calculated. The good agreement between the discretization-based and previous results shows the accuracy of the proposed mechanism, proving that it can be an alternative and reliable approach for complex slope stability analysis.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) numerical analyses have been performed to study the behaviour of single piles and grouped piles to adjacent tunnelling in the lateral direction of the pile. In the numerical analyses, the interaction between the tunnel, the pile and the soil next to the piles and shear transfer mechanism have been analysed allowing soil slip at the pile-soil interface by using interface elements. The study includes the shear stresses at the soil next to the pile, the axial force distributions on the pile and the pile settlement. It has been found that existing elastic solutions may not accurately estimate the pile behaviour since several key issues are excluded. Due to changes in the shear transfer between the pile and the soil next to the pile with tunnel advancement, the shear stresses and axial force distributions along the pile change drastically. Downward shear stress develops above the tunnel springline while upward shear stress is mobilised below the tunnel springline, resulting in a compressive force on the pile. In addition, mobilisation of shear strength at the pile-soil interface was found to be a key factor governing pile-soil-tunnelling interaction. It has been found that grouped piles are less influenced by the tunnelling than the single pile in terms of the axial pile forces. The reduction of apparent allowable pile capacity due to pile settlement resulted from the tunnelling seemed to be insignificant.

  • In the current practice for slope stability problem in Japan, the shear strength, $\tau$, mobilized along the failure surface is usually estimated based on an empirical approximation in which the cohesion, c, is assumed to be equal to the soil thickness above the supposed slip surface, d(m). This approximation is advantageous in that the result of stability analysis is not influenced by the designers in charge. However, since the methodology has little theoretical background, the cohesion may often be grossly overestimated, and conversely the angle of shear resistance, $\phi$, is significantly underestimated, when the soil thickness above the supposed slip surface is quite large. In this paper, a case record of natural slope failure that took place in Hyogo Prefecture in 2007, is described in detail for the case in which the shear strength along the collapsed surface was carefully examined in a series of direct shear box (DSB) tests by considering the effects of in-situ shear stress along the slip surface. It is demonstrated that the factor of safety agrees with that of in-situ conditions when the shear strength from this kind of DSB test was employed for the back-analysis of the slope failure.
