  • The effect of cold cyclic compaction on densification of SiC whisker/Al2O3 composite was investigated. Re-lative density of the compact increased as the number of cycle and the compaction pressure increased and the bias pressure decreased. The rate of loading and unloading and the frequency of cold cyclic compaction did not affect much on sliding and rearrangement of the particles. Fracture of SiC whisker was hardly ob-served during cold cyclic compaction and the direction of whisker was randomly oriented throughout the compact regardless of the direction of compaction. Thus, cold cyclic compaction may be an efficient method to densify SiC whisker/Al2O3 composite.

  • A novel asymmetrical resistance friction damper (ARFD) was proposed in this study to be applied on a rocking column base. The damper comprises multiple steel plates and was fastened using high-strength bolts. The sliding surfaces can be switched into one another and can cause strength to be higher in the loading direction than in the unloading direction. By combining the asymmetrical resistance with the restoring resistance that is generated due to an axial load on the column, the rocking column base can develop a self-centering behavior and achieve high connection strength. Cyclic tests on the ARFD proved that the damper performs a stable asymmetrical hysteretic loop. The desired hysteretic behavior was achieved by tuning the bolt pretension force and the diameter of the round bolt hole. In this study, full-scale, flexural tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of the column base and to verify the analytical model. The results indicated that the column base exhibits a stable self-centering behavior up to a drift angle of 4%. The decompression moment and maximum strength reached 42% and 88% of the full plastic moment of the section, respectively, under a column axial force ratio of approximately 0.2. The strengths and self-centering capacity can be obtained by determining the bolt pretension force. The analytical model results revealed good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Variable thickness plates are commonly used as structural members in the majority of industrial sectors. Previous fracture mechanics researches on variable thickness plates were limited to mode I loading cases. In practice, however, cracks are usually located inclined to the loading direction. In this respect, combined mode(mode I/II) stress intensity factors $K_{I}$ and $K_{II}$ at the crack tip for a variable thickness plate were obtained by 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Variable thickness plates containing a slant edge crack were chosen. The parameters used in this study were dimensionless crack $length{\lambda}$, slant $angle{\alpha}$, thickness $ratio{\beta}$ and width ratio{\omega}$. Stress intensity factors were calculated by crack opening displacement(COD) and crack sliding displacement(CSD)method proposed by Ingraffea and Manu.

  • Recently, a dangerous event occurred at the field industry and mechanical system. At developed by SUNGGOK corp. a R-L clutches of a small and high capacity serves safety device from a variety environment of mechanical system, it permits transmission of driving torque form input to output shaft in both directions of rotation, but restrains any feedback torque of the driven load from rotating the output shaft in either direction. This study was carried out to demonstrate through finite element methode and durability estimation for safety of the R-L clutches without sliding during the engagement process. As results, we organized about endurance test methode when applied rated torque.

  • Most of rock slopes contain a lot of discontinuities which have a specific direction and various characteristics. In general, the collapses of the rock slopes occur when the sliding dip of the discontinuity is higher than the internal friction angle and also smaller than the free-air plane of the slope. If a general slope theory is only considered in the case of field exploration of the slopes, there is a possibility that dangerous slopes might be estimated as stable slopes. We mention problems that can easily fail to notice something in field exploration and propose the alternatives to solve the problems through the case studies.

  • This Paper is about landing control of legged robot. Body stiffness and damping is used as landing strategy of a legged robot. First, we only used stiffness control method to control legged robot landing. Second control method, sliding mode controller and feedback linearization controller is applied to enhance position control performance. Through these control algorithm, body center of gravity behaves like mass with spring & damping in vertical direction on contact regime.

  • The 2nd phase of Seoul Subway, Lines 5,6,7 and 8, is in progress. To reduce the surface traffic congestion during construction the greater part of the system has been engineered by bored tunnelling. The current tunnelling methodology is based on the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. Serveral collapses have been reported to date. Most of the collapses took place in the area forwed with soft ground. The modes and causes of the collapses were progressive failures in the unsupported surface and sliding failures due to the unfavourable joint direction. The major causes turned out to be the weakness of ground and the sudden influx of ground water from the surface. Some measures to prevent the failures are also presented. To ensure the safe tunnelling ghrough the soft ground the unsupported excavation area has to be minimized and closed as early as possible. Additional support measures such as supporting core, sealing shotcrete, forepoling, spread footing, face rock bolting and grouting should be employed as well depend on ground conditions.

  • During past earthquakes several bridges have failed due to a loss of support at their bearings, seats, and/or expansion joints. Most efforts to prevent this have been directed toward tying bridges together at their bearings and expansion joints. Longitudinal restrainers are installed to limit the relative displacement at joints and thus decrease the chance of a loss of support as these locations. Transverse restrainers are necessary in many cases to keep the superstructure from sliding off in the transverse direction. Vertical restrainers are used at bearings to prevent uplifting deck, but usually not economically justified unless additional bearing retrofit is being performed. To obtain this three function of restrainer, a universal restrainer is developed. The load capacities were evaluated in static and dynamic experimental test. The test results show that the measured capacity or strength of the bridge deck restrainer is similar to that of design value.

  • In the semiconductor and the optical industry a new transport system which can replace the conventional sliding system is required. These systems are driven by magnetic field and conveyer belt. The magnetic field damages semiconductor and contact force scratches the optical lens. The ultrasonic wave driven system can solve these problem. In this paper, the vibration behavior of flexural beam in the ultrasonic transport system is verified using Laser Scanning Vibrometer. The experiments for verifying vibration are performed in three conditions such as in the maximum transport speed, in the zero speed, and in the change of transport direction.

  • A carbonyl iron-based magneto-rheological suspension was compressed in the direction of the applied magnetic field and the change in rheological properties was measured. It was found that the compression did not have a large effect on the magneto-rheological response, which is in contrast to recent reports in the literature describing an almost order of magnitude increase in the shear yield stress. The difference can be attributed to the latter test's use of a sliding wedge apparatus which imparts considerable shearing to the sample during the compression.
