  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm to improve DoA(direction of arrival) estimation performance of the subspace-based method by generating high robustness correlation matrix of the signals incident on the uniformly linear array antenna. The existing subspace-based DoA estimation method estimates the DoA by obtaining a correlation matrix and dividing it into a signal subspace and a noise subspace. However, the component of the correlation matrix obtained from the low SNR and small number of snapshots inaccurately estimates the signal subspace due to the noise component of the antenna, thereby degrading the DoA estimation performance. Therefore a robust correlation matrix is generated by arranging virtual signal vectors obtained from the existing correlation matrix in a sliding manner. As a result of simulation using MUSIC and ESPRIT, which are representative subspace-based methods,, the computational complexity increased by less than 2.5% compared to the existing correlation matrix, but both MUSIC and ESPRIT based on RMSE 1° showed superior DoA estimation performance with an SNR of 3dB or more.

  • This paper summarizes the results of a study which uses the recently developed Optical Profile Microscopy technique (Dove and Frost, 1996) as the basis for investigating the role of geomembrane surface roughness on the shear mechanism of geomembrane/geotextile interfaces. The alternative roughness parameters which consider the direction of shearing are described. These directional parameters are compared with the existing roughness parameters, and the relationship between these directional and non-directional parameters are investigated. Then, the relationship between interface shear strength and surface roughness quantified at the interface is investigated. The results show that interface friction can be quantitatively related to the surface roughness of the geomembrane. The peak and residual interface strengths increase dramatically through the use of textured geomembranes as opposed to smooth geomembranes. For the smooth geomembranes, the sliding of the geotextile is the main shear mechanism. For the textured geomembranes, the peak interface strength is mainly mobilized through the micro-texture of the geomembrane, however, the residual interface strength is primarily attributed to macro scale surface roughness which pulls out and breaks the filaments from the geotextile. The results of this study can be extended to the other interfaces such as joints in rock mass, and also can be used to provide a quantitative framework that can lead to a significantly improved basis for the selection and design of geotextiles and geomembranes in direct contact.

  • In rock drilling, the most important characteristic to clarify is the wear of the drill bits. The reason that the rock drill bits fail with time is wear. In dry sliding contact adhesive wear deteriorates the materials in contact, quickly, and is the result of shear fracture in the momentary contact joins between the surfaces. This paper aims at presenting an overview of the assessment of WC/Co cemented carbide (CC) tricone bit in rotary drilling. To study wear of these bits, two approaches have been used in this research. Firstly, the new bits were weighted before they mounted on the drill rigs and also after completion their useful life to obtain bit weight loss percentage. The characteristics of the rock types drilled by using such this bit were measured, simultaneously. Alternatively, to measure contact wear, namely, matrix wear a micrometer has been used with a resolution of 0.02 mm at different direction on the tricone bits. Equivalent quartz content (EQC), net quartz content (QC), muscovite content (Mu), coarseness index (CI) of drill cuttings and compressive strength of rocks (UCS) were obtained along with thin sections to investigate mineralogical properties in detail. The correlation between effective parameters and bit wear were obtained as result of this study. It was observed that UCS shows no significant correlation with bit wear. By increasing CI and cutting size of rocks wear of bit increases.

  • It is a common failure type that high-filled embankment slope sideslips. The deformation mechanism and factors influencing the sideslip of embankment slope is the key to reduce the probability of this kind of engineering disaster. Taking Liujiawan high-filled embankment slope as an example, the deformation and failure characteristics of embankment slope and sheet-pile wall are studied, and the factors influencing instability are analyzed, then the correlation of deformation rate of the anti-slide plies and each factor is calculated with multivariate linear regression analysis. The result shows that: (1) The length of anchoring segment is not long enough, and displacement direction of embankment and retaining structure are perpendicular to the trend of the highway; (2) The length of the cantilever segment is so large that the active earth pressures behind the piles are very large. Additionally, the surface drainage is not smooth, which leads to form a potential sliding zone between bottom of the backfill and the primary surface; (3) The thickness of the backfill and the length of the anti-slide pile cantilever segment have positive correlation with the deformation whereas the thickness of anti-slide pile through mudstone has a negative correlation with the deformation. On the other hand the surface water is a little disadvantage on the embankment stability.

  • Ball reducer with waved grooves has many advantages over other reducers for the high-reduction ratios, low noise and low energy loss, etc. The mechanism of force transmission is very similar to that of cam and follower in automobile valve train system especially in the contact geometry. In this study, we have investigated the traces of contact between ball and outer race and the working behaviors with a certain reduction ratio. In order to verify the contact behaviors between ball and outer race, which determines the critical endurance life the contact velocity and load are computed for a cycle. During some period of a cycle, the contact velocity reverses its direction very suddenly, which causes undesirable endurance performance of this machinery. From the computational investigation in this work, we hope to predict similar contact damages in other machinery due to this kind of contact behaviors, which is very common in many contact phenomena.

  • This paper proposed PID controller for torch slider and PD controller for motor right wheel. to control the motion of two-wheeled welding mobile robot with seam tracking sensor touched on welding line. The motion control is realized in the view of keeping constant welding velocity and precise seam tracking even though the target welding line is on straight line or curved line. The position and direction of the body of the mottle robot are controlled by using signal errors between seam tracking sensor and body positioning sensor attached on the end of torch slider and body side of the mobile robot, respectively. In turning motion, the body and the torch slider are controlled by using the kinematic model related with two motions of body turning and torch sliding. The straight locomotion is controlled according to eleven control patterns obtained from displacements between two sensors of the seam tracking sensor and the body positioning sensor. The effectiveness is proven through the experimental results fur lattice type welding line. Through the experimental results, we can see that the position value of the electrode end point and the welding velocity are controlled almost constantly both in straight and turning locomotion.

  • The failures of the agricultural reservoirs that most have more than 50 years, have increased due to the abnormal weather and localized heavy rains. There are many studies on the prediction of damage from reservoir collapse, however, these referenced studies focused on evaluating reservoir collapse as single unit and applyed to one and two dimensional hydrodynamic model to identify the fluid flow. This study is to estimate failure probability of spillway, sliding, bearing capacity and overflowing targeting small and medium scale agricultural reservoirs. In addition, we calculate failure probability by complex mode. Moreover, we predict downstream flood damage by reservoir failure applying three dimensional hydrodynamic model. When the reservoir destroyed, the results are as follows; (1) the flow of fluid proceeds to same stream direction and to a lower slope by potential and kinetic energy; (2) The predicted damage in downstream is evaluated that damage due to building destruction is the highest.

  • The basic design of today s rolling linear guides with rails is outlined in a French patent from 1932, it was not until the early 1970s that linear guides were commercialized. Progress with the numerical control of machine tools led to higher speed and accuracy of machines that exposed limitations of conventional sliding guides in terms of durability and response capability. As a result, rolling guides, having better high-speed performance and greater compatibility with electronics, began to be used widely. This paper examined theoretically and experimentally the influence of rail bolt tightening on the motion accuracy of linear guides. The rail of a linear guide is tightened and fixed to the base component by bolts. Naturally, the rail is an elastic body and the compression force generated by tightening the volts causes its deflection. Compromising motion accuracy, the rail deforms wavily in a longitudinal direction corresponding to the bolt pitch. The relation between rail position and deflection(sinking) amount caused by bolt tightening was analyzed through FEM analysis in this paper.

  • The numerous benefits of Savonius turbine such as simple in structure, has appropriate self-start ability, relatively low operating velocity, water acceptance from any direction and low environmental impact have generated interests among researchers. However, it suffers from a lower efficiency compared to other types of water turbine. To improve its performance, parameters such flow pattern, pressure and velocity in different conditions must be analyzed. For this purpose, a detailed description on the flow field of various types of Savonius rotors is required. This article presents a numerical study on a nonlinear two-dimensional flow over a classic Savonius type rotor and a Benesh type rotor. In this experiment, sliding mesh was used for solving the motion of the bucket. The unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved for velocity and pressure coupling by using the SIMPLE (Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure linked Equations) algorithm. Other than that, the turbulence model using $k-{\varepsilon}$ standard obtained good results. This simulation demonstrated the method of the flow field characteristics, the behavior of velocity vectors and pressure distribution contours in and around the areas of the bucket.

  • The wear characteristics and wear mechanisms in TiN coating deposited on high speed steel and alloy tool steel by ion plating were investigated. Pin on V-block wear tester was used for a wear test method. The specimen was composed of three kinds of high speed steel and alloy tool steel which had different hardness by changing the heat treating condition. Three kinds of coating thickness were also applied to each specimen. Microscopic observation of worn surfaces was made by SEM. The scratch test of coating surface by the ion plating showed that critical load to break the coating interface was greater than 50N. The critical load increased with both substrate hardness and coating thickness. The wear resistance of TiN coated high speed steel became 10 times greater than that of non-coated ones. SEM observation showed that leading edge of contact was compressive and trailing edge was under maximum tensile stress and then surface cracking broke out perpendicular to sliding direction.
