  • In the semiconductor and the optical industry a new transport system which can replace the conventional sliding system is required. These systems are driven by magnetic field and conveyer belt. The magnetic field damages semiconductor and contact force scratches the optical lens. The ultrasonic wave driven system can solve these problem. In this paper, the vibration behavior of flexural beam in the ultrasonic transport system is verified using Laser Scanning Vibrometer. The experiments for verifying vibration are performed in three conditions such as in the maximum transport speed, in the zero speed, and in the change of transport direction.

  • The vibratory bowl feeder is the most versatile of all hopper feeding devices for small engineering parts, and the typical nonlinear dynamic system experiencing repeated impacts with friction. We model and analyze the dynamic behavior of a single part on the vibrating track of the bowl feeder. While the previous studies are restricted to the sliding regime, we focus our analysis on the hopping regime where the high conveying rate is available. We present the numerical analysis results for conveying rate and frictional impact process both in periodic and chaotic regimes. We examined the dynamic effects from the variation of several physical parameters, and presented the important features for the design of the vibratory bowl feeder. This research holds much potential for leverage over design problems of wide range of mechanisms and tools with repeated collisions.

  • Flow induced vibration in steam generators has caused dynamic interactions between tubes and contacting materials resulting in fretting wear . Series of experiments have been performed to examine the wear properties of Inconel 690 steam generator tubes in various environmental conditions. For the present study, the test rig was designed to examine the fretting wear and rolling wear properties in high temperature(room temperature - 290。C) water. The test was performed at constant applied load and sliding distance to investigate the effect of test temperature on wear properties of the steam generator tube materials. To investigate the wear mechanism of material, the worn was observed using scanning electron microscopy. The weight loss increase at higher test temperature was caused by the decrease of water viscosity and the mechanical property change of tube material. The mechanical property changes of steam generator tube material, such as decrease of hardness or yield stress in the high temperature tests. From the SEM observation of worn surfaces, the severe wear scars were observed in specimens tested at the higher temperature.

  • The most general feature of contact zone among the mechanical components is elliptical circle. In particular, continuously variable transmission (CVT) of toroidal type has elliptical shape of contact zone under the elastohydrodynamic lubrication condition, where the power is transmitted by the shearing the efluid. Due to the traction of the shear behaviors of lubricant over the small elliptical contact zone, high power of torque is transmitted. During the power transmission, many kinds of mechanical movements occur such as squeezing, sliding, rolling and spinning. The spinning effect that is not common contact behavior in tribological components frequently makes significant abnormal wear damage. In this work, the analysis of elliptical contact of elastohydrodynamic lubrication with spin effect is performed, which will give very useful information to understand the traction behaviors in toroidal type of CVT system.

  • Shear-induced phase transformation behavior of chemically stabilized $\beta$-cristobalite was studied by the fiber push-out technique. To obtain the critical grain size for phase transformation, the hot-pressed polycrystalline $\beta$-cristobalite, which was used as the interphase between fiber and matrix, was annealed at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 10h. Two types of fibers, mullite and sapphire fiber, were used in this study. Debonding between mullite fiber and cristobalite interphase occurred at a critical load of 230 MPa. Static friction and fiber sliding were continuously followed by debonding. Shear-induced transformation induced cracks in the cristobalite interphase at the debonding stage. In the case of the sapphire fiber, the debonding occurred at a lower load of 180 MPa due to the residual stress in the interface caused by the difference in thermal expansion coefficients between the fiber and the cristobalite interphase. The load was insufficient for shear-induced phase transformation.

  • Dynamic responses of a multi-span simply supported bridge are examined under seismic excitations considering damage of bearings. An idealized mechanical model which can consider components such as pounding, friction at the supports, abutment-soil interaction, rotational and translational motions of foundations, and the nonlinear pier motions, is developed to analyze the effects due to damage of bearings. It is assumed that the bearing's response after failure can be expressed with a sliding model with a friction coefficient between the superstructure and the pier top. It is found that the global seismic behaviors are significantly influenced by the damage of bearings and the damage of bearings may lead to unseating failure at unpredicted supports. Therefore, It can be concluded that detailed seismic response analyses of bridge systems considering damage of bearings is required for the purpose of the seismic safety evaluation.

  • Manufacturing technologies of micro parts were studied in nano grained Al-1.5mass%Mg alloy. During compressive test at $300^{\circ}C$, the Al alloy showed stain softening phenomenon by grain boundary sliding regardless of strain rate. Micro spur gear with ten teeth (height of $200{\mu}m$ and pitch of $250{\mu}m$) was fabricated with sound shape by micro forging. During micro forging, increase of applied stress induced by friction between material and die surface was effectively compensated by decrease of stress by strain softening behavior and as a result, flow stress increased only about 50 MPa more than that in compressive test

  • Tribological behavior of the diamond-like carbon (DLC) films sliding on floppy disk has been investigated. Hydrogenated DLC films have been prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using methane and hydrogen mixture in different volume ratios on ferrite substrates. DLC films show lower friction coefficients (0.2~0.4) than those of the uncoated ferrite(0.4~0.5). DLC films containing more hydrogen exhibit higher wear resistance. To investigate the roughness effect on wear, the substrates were polished with SiC papers prior to deposition. Too fine or too rough DLC surfaces result in poor wear resistance. Wear resistance of annealed DLC films at higher temperature slightly increases with respect to as-deposited film.

  • We present a new finite-element scheme for direct numerical simulation of particle suspensions in simple shear flow of a viscoelastic fluid in 3D. The sliding tri-periodic representative cell concept has been combined with DEVSS/DG finite element scheme by introducing constraint equations along the domain boundary. Rigid body motion of the freely suspended particle is described by the rigid-shell description and implemented by Lagrangian multipliers on particle boundaries. We present the bulk rheology of suspensions through the numerical examples of single-, two- and many-particle problems, which represent a large number of such systems in simple shear flow. We report the steady bulk viscosity and the first normal stress coefficient, which show shear-thickening behavior for both properties.

  • Recently PZT is used in ultra precision mechanism field. PZT itself has a small driving range although it has a high resolution. Many methods, such as inchworm, impact driving, inertial sliding method, etc., have been applied for moving range expansion. In this study, a new actuating mechanism for rotational motion with two driving PZT is proposed. The Fixed-Fixed beam support is applied for compensation of the difference in driving force between expansion and contraction of PZT. The behavior and design parameters of the proposed mechanism are analyzed for improving performance.
