A new scheme for variable structure control design which is based on eigenvalues assignment of sliding mode is developed. In conventional methods, generally, specific type of system matrix like canonical or regular form is required to construct a switching surface. Furthermore, the methods are not explicit. The new method in this paper solved the problems. No special type of system matrix is required and very explicit. It is shown that the switching surface can be constructed and determined uniquely without any dependency on the system form. The proposed method is based on the fact that the dynamics of sliding mode is determined by system zeros. Finally, a numerical example is given to verify the validity of the results studied in this paper.
[ $MoS_2$ ], is a well-known metal sulfide applied as solid lubricants and an additive to prolong the life of sintered bearings under severe conditions. However, the high price of $MoS_2$ limited its wide application. This study is aimed to investigate the possibility far application to solid lubricants for $Cu_2S$ as a substitute of $MoS_2$. Bronzes added $Cu_2S$ and $MoS_2$, are produced by powder metallurgy in this study, and then evaluated their friction and wear properties., as well as sintered bronze. The sliding wear test using pin-on-disc type machine, was conducted at several sliding speeds for three type test pieces sintered bronzes added $Cu_2S$ and $MoS_2$, and sintered bronze without lubricants. Addition of $Cu_2S$ to bronze leads to relatively good friction properties, although it is not so good as addition of $MoS_2$. However, the wear properies of sintered bronze added $Cu_2S$ are better than that of sintered bronze added $MoS_2$.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the static (SFF) and kinetic frictional forces (KFF) in sliding mechanics of hybrid bracket systems that involve placing a conventional bracket (CB) or active self-ligating bracket (ASLB) on the maxillary anterior teeth (MXAT) and a passive SLB (PSLB) on the maxillary posterior teeth (MXPT). Methods: The samples consisted of two thoroughbred types (group 1, anterior-CB + posterior-CB; group 2, anterior-ASLB + posterior-ASLB) and four hybrid types (group 3, anterior-CB + posterior-PSLB-type 1; group 4, anterior-CB + posterior-PSLB-type 2; group 5, anterior-ASLB + posterior-PSLB-type 1; group 6, anterior-ASLB + posterior-PSLB-type 2) (n = 13 per group). After maxillary dentition alignment and maxillary first premolars removal in the stereolithographically-made typodont system, a $0.019{\times}0.025$-inch stainless steel wire was drawn through the right quadrant of the maxillary arch at 0.5 mm/min for 5 min. The SFF and KFF were measured with a mechanical testing machine and statistical analyses were performed. Results: Four different categories of SFF and KFF were observed among all groups (all p < 0.001). Group 1 demonstrated the highest SFF and KFF; groups 4 and 3 were second and third highest, respectively. The fourth category included groups 2, 5, and 6. Placing PSLBs on the MXPT resulted in significant SFF and KFF reductions in cases with CBs on the MXAT, but not in cases with ASLBs on the MXAT. Conclusions: These data might aid in the development of a hybrid bracket system that enables low-friction sliding of an archwire through the MXPT.
This paper summarizes the results of a research on the isolate effects and economical efficiencies of seismic isolation design compared with the existing earthquake-resistant design, and presents seismic performance of the base isolation system consisting of sliding-type bearing and lead rubber bearing (LRB) compared with that consisting of the LRB only. From the results of the research, it is verified that seismic isolation is very effective to mitigate the influence of earthquake on structures and it is possible to increase the serviceability due to decrease of the floor acceleration. Also, from the point of view of reduction of story acceleration and base shear, the base isolation system consisting of sliding-type bearing and LRB is more effective than that with LRB only. In respect of economical efficiency, special care should be taken in using this method since costs which have to be paid in proportin to increased performance are high.
This study investigates the effect of spatial averaging and compliance taken account of in the analysis of earthquake-induced permanent deformation of slopes. At present, the rigid block analysis originally proposed by Newmark is widely used in the deformation analysis, mainly because of its computational efficiency. This type of approach, however, adopts the so-called decoupled approach, in which seismic response and deformation analyses are carried out separately. Original Newmark block analysis assumes the potential sliding mass to be noncompliant, and has been criticized to be potentially unconservative. This paper reviews the impact of the noncompliance assumption of the potential sliding mass in the Newmark-type analysis. The gross effects of earthquake shaking on the potential sliding mass are estimated by spatial averaging method and analyzed in frequency domain. The results indicate that there is a simple criterion that can be used to determine the level of compliance of the potential sliding mass.
In nuclear power steam generators, high flow rates can induce vibration of the tubes resulting in fretting wear damage due to contacts between the tubes and their supports. In this paper the fretting wear tests and the sliding wear tests were performed using the steam generator tube materials of Inconel 600 and 690 against STS 304. Sliding tests with the pin-on-disk type tribometer were done under various applied loads and sliding speeds at air environment. Fretting tests were done under various vibrating amplitudes and applied normal loads. From the results of sliding and fretting wear tests, the wear of Inconel 600 and 690 can be predictable using the work rate model. Depending on normal loads and vibrating amplitudes, distinctively different wear mechanisms and often drastically different wear rates can occur. It was found the results that the wear coefficients for Inconel 600 and 690 were 262.3$\times$10$\^$-15/Pa$\^$-1/ and 209.2$\times$10$\^$-15/Pa$\^$-1/, respectively. This study shows that Inconel 690 can provide much better wear resistance than Inconel 600 in air.
Recently, earthquake proof technology has been widely applied to both new and existing structures and bridges. The analysis of bridge systems equipped with structural control devices, which possess large degrees of freedom and nonlinear characteristics, is a result in time-consuming task. Therefore, a piecewise exact solution is proposed in this study to simplify the seismic mitigation analysis process for bridge systems equipped with sliding-type isolators. In this study, the simplified system having two degrees of freedom, to reasonably represent the large number of degrees of freedom of a bridge, and is modeled to obtain a piecewise exact solution for system responses during earthquakes. Simultaneously, we used the nonlinear finite element computer program to analyze the bridge responses and verify the accuracy of the proposed piecewise exact solution for bridge systems equipped with sliding-type isolators. The conclusions derived by comparing the results obtained from the piecewise exact solution and nonlinear finite element analysis reveal that the proposed solution not only simplifies the calculation process but also provides highly accurate seismic responses of isolated bridges under earthquakes.

The objective of this paper is to propose a new velocity measurement method for an electro-mechanical fin actuator. The model of the electro-mechanical fin actuator includes uncertainties such as unknown disturbances and parameter variations in flight condition. So, an electro-mechanical fin actuator system needs robust control algorithm which requires not only position information but also velocity information. Usually, analog tachometers have been used for velocity feedback in an electro-mechanical fin actuator. However, using these types of sensors have problems such as the cost, space, and malfunction. These problems lead to propose a new velocity measurement method using linear type Hall-effect sensor. In order to verify the proposed method, several experiments are performed using Model Following Sliding Mode Controller(MFSMC). It is shown that the MFSMC with a new velocity measurement method using linear type Hall-effect sensor can satisfy the requirements without using of velocity sensor.
In this paper, the pneumatic service robot with a hybrid type is developed. A pneumatic has the advantage of good compliance, high payload-to-weight and payload-to-volume ratios, high speed and force capabilities. Using pneumatic actuators which have low stiffness, the service robot can guarantee safety. By suggesting a new serial-parallel hybrid type for the service robot which separates into positioning motion and orienting motion, we can achieve large workspace and high strength-to-moving-weight ratio at the same time. A sliding mode controller can be designed for tracking the desired output using the Lyapunov stability theory and structural properties of pneumatic servo systems. Through many experiments of circular trajectory, the pneumatic service robot is evaluated and verified.
The natural refrigerant $CO_2$has attracted as an alternative refrigerant currently used in air conditioning system, which has high global warming potential. In this study, the tribological characteristics of the sliding surfaces between a fixed scroll and an orbiting scroll of the scroll compressor were investigated in $CO_2$/ POE mixed environment. The pin-on-disk type sliding tests were carried out under the various sliding speeds, normal loads. surface roughness, and pressures. During the test, friction forces, wear amount and surface temperature were monitored.
