One of the serious challenges in developing rotary compressor with HFC refrigerant is the prediction of scuffing times and wear amounts between vane and roller surfaces. In this study, the tribological characteristics of sliding surfaces using vane-roller geometry of rotary compressor were investigated. The sliding tests were carried out under various sliding speeds, normal loads and surface roughness. During the test, friction force, wear depth, time to failure and surface temperature were monitored. Because severe wear occurred on vane surface, TiN coating was applied on sliding surfaces to prolong the wear life of vane-roller interfaces. From the sliding test it was found that there was the optimum initial surface roughness to break in and to prolong the wear life of sliding surfaces. Depending on the load and speed, the protective layers, which were composed of metallic oxide and organic compound, were formed on sliding surfaces. Those would play an important role in the amounts of friction and wear between roller and vane surfaces.
Sheet-forming of Mg alloys is conducted at elevated temperatures (250℃) due to the low formability at room temperature. The high-temperature process often gives rise to surface damage on the alloy (i.e. galling.) In the current study, the frictional characteristics of DLC coating slid against an AZ31 Mg alloy at various temperatures were investigated. The coating has been used widely for low-friction processes. Dry-sliding friction and galling characteristics of an AZ31 Mg alloy (disk), which slid against uncoated and a DLC-coated STD-61 steel (pin), were investigated using a reciprocating-sliding tribometer at room temperature and 250℃. To represent the real sliding phenomena during a sheet metal forming process, single-stroke tests were used (10mm stroke length) rather than a reciprocating long sliding-distance test. The DLC coating suppressed adhesion between the alloy and the tool steel at room temperature, and exhibited a low friction coefficient. However, during sliding at 250℃, severe adhesion occurred between the two surfaces, which resulted in a high friction coefficient and galling.
We have studied on operational characteristics of the nitrogen laser with sliding discharge and longitudinal excitation. We could observe radiation of nitrogen laser excited by a sliding discharge along the surface of a dielectric. The shape of the beam was a ring type which had 2 mm or 4mm in diameter depending on the sliding discharge tube shape. In this experiment, We show the possibilities to make other shapes of laser beam, for example, rectangle, ellipse, and to excite another gas laser system like an excimer laser.

The relationship between friction characteristics and iron oxides at the sliding interface was investigated. Three friction materials containing iron, magnetite $(Fe_3O_4)$ or hematite $(Fe_2O_3)$ were manufactured and friction tests were performed on gray cast iron disks to evaluate the friction coefficient as a function of sliding speed $\mu-\nu$. In-situ noise spectrum analyzer was employed to compare noise propensity during friction tests. Results show that the specimens with magnetite are more sensitive to velocity than those with iron or hematite. The specimens containing magnetite and hematite generated noise with different peaks in the spectrum. The difference in the peak frequency seems attributed to the different surface aggressiveness of iron oxides and intermittent changes of real contact area at the sliding interface during sliding. Surface morphology and roughness of the counter disc after the tests are also consistent with the aggressiveness of iron oxides.

The dry sliding tribological characteristics were investigated using SiC particle-reinforced aluminum composites against semi-metallic frictional materials. The experimental results have indicated that, whether under the condition of continuous braking or not, the wear rates of SiC particle reinforced composites are much less than that of gray cast iron which is used as one of the common brake disk materials. At the same time, their frictional coefficients are about the same.

The effect of load and sliding speed on abrasive wear characteristics of glass fiber/polyurethane (GF/PUR) composites were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The friction coefficient, cumulative wear volume and surface roughness of these materials against SiC abrasive paper were determined experimentally. Experimental results showed that the surface roughness of the GF/PUR composites was increased as applied load was higher in wear test. The cumulative wear volume tended to increase nonlinearly with increase of sliding distance and depended on applied load and sliding speed for these composites. It could be verified by scanning electric microscopy (SEM) photograph of surface tested that major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, ploughing, delamination, deformation of resin and cracking.
For the wear characteristics assessment of Saemaul train passing through curves, an analysis model for multi-car system has been developed. By using this model and ADAMS/Rail, sensitivity analyses have been conducted for the wear characteristics by changing the related parameters. According to the increase of running speed, the wear number, the sliding mean and friction coefficient were increased. At high speed, the wear number, the sliding mean and friction coefficient of left wheel showed higher than right wheel. If the cant increased, the wear number the sliding mean and friction coefficient increased. but decreased based on the balance cant value by the curvature and running speed.
Friction reduction between sliding hydraulic machine components is required to improve efficiency and reliability of hydraulic machineries. It is recently reported that surface texturing on sliding bearing surfaces can reduce the friction force highly. In this paper, numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the effect of dimple numbers and inlet boundary pressures on the lubrication characteristics of a parallel sliding bearing using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT. The results show that the pressure distribution, load capacity, dimensionless friction force and leakage with dimple number and their locations, and inlet pressures. The overall lubrication characteristics are highly affected by dimple numbers and boundary pressure. The numerical method adopted and results can be used in design of efficient hydraulic machine components.
To study the effectiveness of sliding isolation in a CRLSS (concrete rectangular liquid-storage structure) and develop a reasonable limiting-device method, dynamic responses of non-isolation, sliding isolation with spring limiting-devices and sliding isolation with steel bar limiting-devices are comparatively studied by shaking table test. The seismic response reduction advantage of sliding isolation for concrete liquid-storage structures is discussed, and the effect of the limiting-device type on system dynamic responses is analyzed. The results show that the dynamic responses of sliding isolation CRLSS with steel bar-limiting devices are significantly smaller than that of sliding isolation CRLSS with spring-limiting devices. The structure acceleration and liquid sloshing wave height are greatly influenced by spring-limiting devices. The acceleration of the structure in this case is close to or greater than that of a non-isolated structure. Liquid sloshing shows stronger nonlinear characteristics. On the other hand, sliding isolation with steel bar-limiting devices has a good control effect on the structural dynamic response and the liquid sloshing height simultaneously. Thus, a limiting device is an important factor affecting the seismic response reduction effect of sliding isolation. To take full advantage of sliding isolation in a concrete liquid-storage structure, a reasonable design of the limiting device is particularly important.
The feel of writing is important to customers when they buy smart devices with stylus such as smartphones and tablet computers. With an aim to reproduce the tactile sensibility of writing instruments when people write on the glass display using a stylus, this study focuses on the frequency characteristics of writing instruments that can describe the vibrations of writing instruments sliding over counter surfaces. In addition, this study includes the effect of various factors influencing the friction of writing instruments such as lubricant, nib material, and contact type. We perform sliding experiments with six types of writing instruments and a sheet of paper to understand the relation between the friction conditions of the nib and the frequency characteristics. As this research focuses on the tactile perception of human skin when people use a writing instrument, the analysis of frequency characteristics is performed in the perceptible frequency range of mechanoreceptors in the human skin. As a result, three types of frequency characteristics are identified. Low frequency peaks are observed for a metal nib with ink; high frequency peaks are observed for a nib without ink; and, middle frequency peaks with a wide range of distribution occurs for fabric nibs with ink. Therefore, to implement the proper feel of writing, at least three types of vibrations have to be made.
