  • Global buckling is a bending of pipeline and it occurs when the stability of pipeline is distributed by excessive axial force. Subesea pipeline is subjected to axial force induced by temperature and pressure from well and resulting phenomena should be controlled in appropriate manner. Global buckling of subsea pipeline is still ongoing research subject and is studied various organization. In this study, various control methods such as buoyancy module, sleeper, and snake lay for global buckling of subsea pipeline were numerically investigated with various design parameters. From the numerical simulation results, the global buckling control method using sleepers shows better results than buoyancy module and snake lay control methods in the sense of combined stress after buckling. Furthermore, the global buckling of full scale pipeline of 80km with uneven seabed profile were successfully managed when the sleeper was installed.

  • The load of a maglev train, which is being considered a future transportation, is uniformly loaded on a levitated surface of a rail unlike a typical train because the maglev train is magnetically levitated and propelled. In addition, the driving performance is superior since the maglev train doesn't directly contact the railway. A integrated track system, to which a sleeper is installed toward a longitudinal direction instead of a perpendicular direction, is suggested, considering this loading characteristic. The longitudinal sleeper of this system is expected to contribute to stiffness increase of a bridge and weight-reduction of a girder. In this study, the structural characteristics of proposed and typical systems have been numerically compared and analyzed. In addition, the improvement of the integrated system has been proposed.

  • The egg development and early life history of Korean spotted sleeper, Odontobutis interrupta which is Korean endemic species from Sora-choen was investigated. The Korean spotted sleeper were caught at Sora-myeon, Yeosu-si, Jeollanamdo, from Korea at May in 2014. The fertilized eggs were $4.23{\pm}0.05mm$ in long diameter and had oil globules. Hatching time of the embryo began about 442 hr 14 min after fertilization under water temperature of $19.5^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were $4.27{\pm}0.35mm$ in total length and their anus were not yet opened. 3 days after hatching postlarvae was measured $6.20{\pm}0.11mm$ in total length. 10 days after hatching postlarvae was measured $6.69{\pm}0.14mm$ in total length.

  • A quick-hardened concrete track was developed to improve the aged ballasted track to a concrete track, and applied to earthworks and tunnels of main and urban railways. Rebars for reinforcement are not generally applied to prestressed concrete sleepers. On the other hand, many cracked sleepers have been observed in railroad sites. A wide sleeper, which is one of the main components of quick-hardened concrete track, should be structurally safe and crack-resistant in a ballasted and concrete track to avoid this problem. In particular, a wide sleeper manufactured by a post-tension method must have reinforcing bars applied to the rail-seat section. In this paper, static tests, dynamic tests, and fatigue tests were carried out to compare the flexural strength and crack resistance performance of a wide sleeper with and without reinforcing bars for a quick-hardened concrete track. As a result of the test, if some reinforcing bars are applied appropriately to the rail-seat section of a wide sleeper, it will be possible to prevent the occurrence of cracks, delay the expansion of the crack width, and the flexural fracture.

  • For performance evaluation of modified wide sleepers(MF-140 PSC sleepers), design moment for urban transit was calculated and then performance evaluation criteria were set up according to EN 13230-2. Next, static bend tests, dynamic tests at rail seat section of sleeper were carried out and static bend tests at center section of sleeper were fulfilled. The test results for modified wide sleepers were in excess of performance evaluation criteria and structural safety of sleepers was able to guaranteed from the results. As modifying depth of wide sleepers, construction convenience in underground will be expected to be improved and construction costs will be expected to be decreased.

  • Impact factor of concrete and ballast track which has been used in Korea railway was applied to equation (1+0.513V/100) from AREA. As the use of this equation, overcapacity of track design might be occurred. Therefore, this study compared impact of ballast track (well, bad) and concrete track (sleeper embeded system, rail floating and sleeper floating) by field test to analyzing dynamic effect of track structure's characteristic and wheel load on service line. In addition, it suggested a method to generate reasonable track impact factor on each track type.

  • It is very important to pay careful attention to construction of earthwork/tunnel transition zone for railway. The transition zone of the railway is the section which roadbed stiffness is suddenly varied. Differences in stiffness have dynamic effects and these increase the forces in the track and the extent of deformation. In this study, performance of transition zone was investigated through the field tests. The wheel loads and sleeper settlement were measured after installing field testing sections.

  • Response of the rail surface is an important factor for the train safety and comfortable travel, and evaluation of vibration at the area along a rail is an important factor for the vibration. The dominant method to reduce the vibration that reach the ground is installing vibration absorber between rall and the under structure. In this paper, we evaluated the vibration reducing effect of using vibration control sleeper pads to slave and earth at certain distance from the sleepers.

  • The gravel ballast in the ballasted track has the function to not only transfer/scatter the train loads to subgrade through rail and sleeper but also elastically support the train loads. Because track irregularities results inevitably from the repetitive train loads, the track maintenance should be undertaken for correcting them. By analyzing the track maintenance history in the Gyeongbu high speed railway, this study tries to choose the local two spots in the railway in which the repair frequencies are maximum and relative small; to analyze their dynamic characteristics as well as grade; and to compare them with maintenance history. As the dynamic characteristics of track, the vertical displacement and vibrating acceleration of sleeper as well as acceleration of ballast are measured/analyzed. Furthermore, by collecting soil and gravel on the reinforced roadbed and undertaking ballast screening test, the size distributions are compared with grade distribution standards of high speed railway.

  • The railroad under operation has very sharp curves and the state of ballast is somewhat deteriorated due to the traffic loads, which put some constraints in converting the conventional rails into CWR. In making CWR, the determination whether the ballast has sufficient capacity for resisting buckling must be made, quantitatively and qualitatively, and schemes to guarantee the required lateral resistance of ballast should be proposed. In this study, using the in-situ investigated data, the probability of buckling of CWR is given for several installation temperatures for CWR. The effect of tamping, DTS, and sleeper spacing are taken into account. The buckling probability is given as a function of curvature and installation temperature of CWR and works used to increase the ballast resistance capacity after tamping, i.e., DTS and reduction of sleeper sparing.
