  • The results of an experimental investigation on the co-firing characteristics and slagging behavior of dried and hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge, sub-bituminous coal, and wood pellet in a fluidized bed were presented. Combustion tests were conducted in a lab-scale bubbling fluidized bed system at the uniform fuel-air equivalence ratio, air flow rate, and initial bed temperature to measure bed temperature distribution and combustion gas composition. 4 different fuel blending cases were prepared by mixing sewage sludge fuels with coal and wood pellet with the ratio of 50 : 50 by the heating value. $NO_x$ was mostly NO than $NO_2$ and measured in the range of 400 to 600 ppm in all cases. $SO_2$ was considered to be affected mostly by the sulfur content of the sewage sludge fuels. The cases of hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge mixture showed slightly less $SO_2$ emission but higher fuel-N conversion than the dried sewage sludge mixing cases. The result of fly ash composition analysis implied that the sewage sludge fuels would increase the possibility of slagging/fouling considering the contents of alkali species, such as Na, K, P. Between the two different sewage sludge fuels, dried sewage sludge fuel was expected to have the more severe impact on slagging/fouling behavior than hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge fuel.

  • The analysis of coal ash is very important to predict some factors, such as slagging and fouling in the boiler, and to determine optimum mixing ratios of the each coals used. In ASTM, the analysis of coal ash is clarified to use lithium metaborate (LiBO$_2$) as a fluxing agent and then to analyze the pre-treated samples using AAS. However, it takes too much time and efforts to analyze many samples by ASTM method, as a result, this method is not proper in our laboratory in charge of analyses of all power plants. So we tried to establish more convenient and accurate analytical method of coal ash by 3 different methods which are 2 different pre-treatment methods (fusion dissolution and microwave digestion) and XRF analysis method using a clear pellet. Although all 3 methods can be utilized to analyze the major elements of coal ash, each method has its own characteristics, therefore, each method should be chosen according to its own purpose.

  • This study provides the identification of corrosion cause substances in super heater tube from a commercial scale circulating fluidized bed boiler. Electricity is produced by the combustion of biomass mainly wood waste. The biomass, super heater tube, super heater tube ash, and boiler ash were collected and components associated with corrosion were analyzed. A large amount of oxygen-containing material was found due to oxidation. The chlorine content was analyzed as 6.1% and 4.3% in super heater tube ash and boiler ash respectively which were approximately 20 and 14 times higher than those of designed values. Also, alkaline metal contents (K, Na, Ca) were very high in ash samples collected from super heater tube and boiler. The tendency of slagging and fouling was predicted based on X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) results. Basicity that can lead to slagging was estimated as 3.62 and 2.72 in super heater tube and boiler ash, respectively. Slagging would occur with ash content when considering the designed value as 0.35.

  • To estimate the combustion characteristics of sewage sludge and wood pellet, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted. As TGA results, combustion characteristics of sewage sludge was worse than wood pellet. In ash fusion temperature (AFT) analysis, slagging tendency of sewage sludge is very high compared to wood pellet. And also, the bubbling fluidized bed reactor with a inner diameter 400 mm and a height of 4300 mm was used for experimental study of combustion characteristics fueled by sewage sludge and wood pellet. The facility consists of a fluidized bed reactor, preheater, screw feeder, cyclone, ash capture equipment and gas analyzer. The thermal input of sewage sludge cases were $54.5{\sim}96.5kW_{th}$, in case of wood pellet experiment, it was $96.1kW_{th}$. As experiment results, the $NO_x$ emission of sewage sludge was averagely about 10 times the $NO_x$ emission of wood pellet. And also CO emission of sewage sludge is about 3.5 times of wood pellet. Lastly as a result of analysis of captured ash in cyclone, the combustion efficiency of all cases were over 99%, but the potential for slagging/fouling was high at all cases by component analysis of ash.

  • Coal gasification technology in the sector of domestic clean coal technologies is being into the limelight since recent dramatic rise of international oil price. In this study, we used a low rank coal from Inner Mongolia, China as a starting material for gasification. Various properties including optical, mineralogical, X-ray spectroscopic, X-ray diffraction, and drying property were measured and tested in order to estimate the suitability of the coal to gasification. The coal was identified as a brown coal of lignite group from the measurement of vitrinite reflectance. The coal has very low slagging and fouling potentials, and the ignition temperature is about $250^{\circ}C$. The major impurities consist of quartz, siderite, and clay minerals. Additionally, the coal had moisture content above 28%. Tests for finding effective drying method showed that the microwave drying is more effective than thermal drying.

  • In the Shell coal gasification process, the syngas produced in a gasifier passes through a syngas cooler for steam production and temperature control for gas cleaning. Fly slag present in the syngas may cause major operational problems such as erosion, slagging, and corrosion, especially in the upper part of the syngas cooler (gas reversal chamber, GRC). This study investigates the flow, heat transfer and particle behaviors in the GRC for a 300 MWe IGCC process using computational fluid dynamics. Three operational loads of 100%, 75% and 50% were considered. The gas and particle flows directly impinged on the wall opposite to the syngas inlet, which may lead to erosion of the membrane wall. The heat transfer to the wall was mainly by convection which was larger on the side wall at the inlet level due to the expansion of the cross-section. In the evaporator below the GRC, the particles were concentrated more on the outer channels, which needs to be considered for alleviation of fouling and blockage.

  • Biomass has been used to secure renewable energy certificates (REC) in domestic and overseas coal-fired power plants. In recent years, biofuel has been diversified from traditional wood pellets to non-woody biomass. Non-woody biomass has a higher content of alkaline metals such as K and Na than wood-based biomass, resulting in a lower melting point and an increase in slagging on boiler tubes, which reduces boiler efficiency. This study analyzed the effect of kaolin, an additive commonly used to increase melting points, on biomass co-firing to coal through thermochemical equilibrium calculations. In a previous experiment on biomass co-firing to coal conducted at 80 kWth, it was interpreted that the use of kaolin actually increased the amount of fouling. In this study, analysis showed that when kaolin was added, aluminosilicate compounds were generated due to Al2O3, which is abundant in coal, and mullite was formed. Thus, it was confirmed that the amount of slag increased when more kaolin was used. Further analysis was conducted by increasing the biomass co-firing rate from 0% to 100% at 10% intervals, and the results showed non-linear liquid slag generation. As a result, it was found that the least amount of liquid slag was generated when the biomass co-firing rate was between 50 and 60%. The phase diagram analysis showed that high melting point compounds such as leucite and feldspar were most abundantly generated under these conditions.

  • The bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) reactor with a diameter of 0.1 m and a height of 1.2 m was used for experimental study of co-firing and emission characteristics fueled by sewage sludge (SS) and wood pellet (WP). The facility consists of a fluidized bed reactor, feeding system, cyclone, condenser and gas analyzer, The mean particle diameter and minimum fluidization velocity are $460{\mu}m$ and $0.21ms^{-1}$ respectively. SS produced from Korea and WP from Canada were examined. The various mixing ratios of WP were 20, 50, and 80% based on HHV. The equivalence ratio of 1.65, reactor temperature of $800^{\circ}C$, air flow rate of $100Lmin^{-1}$, and fluidization number of 4 were fixed in the BFB experiment. In TGA, the range of combustion temperature of SS was wider than that of WP. It represents that the combustibility of WP is higher than that of SS. The BFB reactor temperature was maintained between 800 and $900^{\circ}C$. CO emission of SS was high because of lower combustibility. $NO_X$ and $SO_X$ formation of SS were higher than that of WP since high nitrogen and sulfur contents of SS. CO, $NO_X$, and $SO_X$ formation were suppressed as the mixing ratio of WP was increased. The slagging and fouling tendencies show high in all test conditions.
