  • The semi-rigid joint is the shape of middle that can supplement the defect of pin joints and accept the good point of rigid joints. Recently, a study on the pin joints is activated in the country, but because the study on semi-rigid joints is not many, this study tried to prove with producing test model of three shape. The test models are rigid joint HI-R, semi-rigid joint HI-S, pin joint HI-P. As a result of the test, respectively HI-R, HI-S, HI-P appeared shear failure of joint, flexure failure of the top fixing, flexure failure of the lower part slipping stair slab, and the maximum strength is measured to 51.74, 51.4, 24.63kN, the stiffness is appeared 1.58, 1.19, 0.37 respectively, The yield strength is respectively kept 44.5, 47.3, 24kN, and ductility ratio is appeared to 3.31, 2.32, 1.54, when is based on KBC code, sag of the acting service load is appeared that HI-P model is over the standard. When is based on distribution of bars strain ratio, HI-S seems similar behavior incipiently, but after the yield, the semi-rigid joint was able to be judged better than pin joint because of the stress allotment of joint internal elements.

  • In this study, in order to apply ultra-high-strength concrete beams of 100 MPa or more manufactured by centrifugal molding as the superstructure of the avalanche tunnel, the purpose is to verify the structural safety of the corner rigid joint in which the centrifugal molded beam is integrated with the substructure, which is the negative moment area. A full-size specimen was manufactured, and loading tests and analysis studies were performed. In order to expect the same effect that the maximum moment occurs in the corner joint part of the upper slab end when the standard model of the avalanche tunnel is designed with a load combination according to the specification, a modified cantilever type structural model specimen was manufactured and the corner rigid joint was fixedly connected. A study was performed to determine the performance of the method and the optimal connection construction method. The test results demonstrated that the proposed connection system outperforms others. Despite having differences in joint connection construction type, stable flexural behavior was shown in all the tested specimens. The proposed method also outperformed the behavior of centrifugally formed beams and upper slabs. The behavior of the corner rigid joint analysis model according to the F.E. analysis showed slightly greater stiffness compared to the results of the experiment, but the overall behavior was almost similar. Therefore, there is no structural problem in the construction of the corner rigid joint between the centrifugally formed beam and the wall developed in this study.

  • Two-girder bridge is composed of primary members such as deck slab and main girder, and secondary member such as cross beam, vertical and horizontal stiffeners etc,. Two-girder bridge is prescribed as a non-redundant load path structure in the ASSHTO and the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code. Such structure is that if one girder is damaged, problems of function and safety of the bridge are caused. From the reasons, fatigue cracks in two-girder bridge can affect safety of the bridge seriously. Therefore, in this paper, fatigue evaluation was performed at connection parts of vertical stiffener and web with radius of curvature of scallop of vertical stiffener and thickness of web as variables. Such joint is known as a detail which has high possibility of fatigue crack in the bridge. Based upon the analytical results, preferable joint detail in terms of fatigue and simple empirical formula for fatigue evaluation of the detail were suggested.

  • Recently, the interest of precast concrete is increased for rapid construction in construction fields. Experimental study about the shear performance of the joint between hollow core slabs which have internal core to reduce their weight was performed. Main test variables were thickness of the topping concrete and existence of the wiremesh. Total 8 specimens including 4 in-plane shear and 4 out of plane shear were tested. Test results were analyzed in terms of cracking load, failure load, failure aspect, stiffness and ductility, and compared its design load to develop optimum design details. Test results indicated that the shear performance of the non-shrinkage mortar specimen was similar to that of 30mm thickness topping concrete specimen, and the effect of wiremesh reinforcement did not affect the failure load or stiffness of the specimens but the increase of ductility. And this paper presents the comparison results of the test results and design load to provide the optimum detail of the joint design between the hollow core slabs.

  • The purpose of study is to investigate the load resistance mechanism of MRS continuous joint designed with different details. Six full-scale specimens, which could simulate the negative moment region of the 8 m long MRS system, were prepared to evaluate the structural performance of the continuous joint. According to the experimental results, all specimens which include the specimen with dapped ends designed by loads at the construction stage were failed in a flexural manner and showed the load carrying capacity over the nominal flexural strength. Therefore it is recommended that the dapped ends for MRS continuous joints be designed for the loads of the construction stage. And the shear key, which was installed on the top of rib for MRS slab, helps the enhancement of strength and especially deformation capacity.

  • The influence of elevated temperatures on the mechanical properties of concrete is important for fire-resistance studies and also for understanding the behavior of containment vessel, such as nuclear reactor pressure vessels, during service and ultimate condition. The present study is to clarify the damage/deterioration of concrete structures that are subjected to high temperature exposure. To this end, comprehensive experiments are conducted. The major test variables are the peak temperatures, rate of temperature increase, and sustained duration at peak temperature. The results include weight loss residual compressive strength and stress-strain curve. From those results, residua compressive strength formula and stress-strain relationship are proposed.

  • This is the first of two part series on experimental studies of grout type transverse joints. In this study, grout type transverse joints between precast concrete slabs are statically tested to determine the cracking loads and ultimate shear capacities of the grout type transverse joints. The tests are performed with a loading equipment designed and constructed especially in the lab to induce shear failures on the joints of the test specimens. Shape of the transverse joints, grouting materials and amount of prestress are selected as test parameters for the study. The results indicate that epoxy is an excellent grouting material which can be used in limited locations where large tensile stress is acting on the slab. Longitudinal prestressing is also an effective method to increase the shear strength of the transverse joints. A rational method to estimate the cracking and ultimate loads for the design of grout type transverse joints is proposed based on the static loading tests. Success of the tests with shear loading equipment allowed continuing the research further onto the fatigue strength of the grout type joints, which will be presented in the second part of the paper.

  • This study has been conducted to confirm the effect of sacrificial anode cathodic protection system for 90 days to protect corrosion on pier that is located in Korea. The cathodically protected structure was a slab and a pile cap. Before the construction of cathodic protection system, the macrography was carried out. As a result of the macrography, many corrosion traces were confirmed in this structure. The trace was mainly focused on joint and zones that concrete cover was eliminated. To apply the cathodic protection system, many onsite techniques have been adopted. In addition, to confirm the inner state of steel in concrete properly, a corrosion monitoring sensor (DMS-100, Conclinic Co. Ltd) has been applied. Test factors were corrosion & cathodic protection potential, 4 hour depolarization potential, resistivity and current density. After 90 days from the installation of cathodic protection system, it could confirm that proper corrosion protection effect was obtained by considering the result of tests.

  • This is a basic experimental study to apply FRP modular box member to a variety of construction structures exposed to flexural strength, such as a slab and a girder. Applying FRP modular box member to a real structure requires a large section. FRP box member was made into modular systems. Tests were conducted under various conditions in order to analyze jointing performance of the developed FRP modular box member as a large section. For the methods of jointing FRP modular box member, synthetic resins connection, mechanical connection, and a combination of both were used to test both length and breadth connection. As a result of the test, using urethane + two bolts + sheets was the most efficient method of connecting FRP modular box member. It is expected that the proposed joint system in this study will contribute to the increase of failure load and synthesis behavior of FRP modular box member.

  • The analysis of steel-concrete composite joints presents some particular aspects that increase their complexity when compared to bare steel joints. In particular, the influence of slab reinforcement and column concrete encasement clearly change the moment-rotation response of the joint. Starting from an energy approach developed in the context of steel joints, an extension to composite joints is presented in this paper that is able to provide closed-form analytical solutions. In addition, the possibility of tri-linear or non-linear component behaviour is also incorporated in the model, enabling adequate treatment of the influence of cracked concrete in tension and the softening response of the column web in compression. This methodology is validated through comparison with experimental tests carried out at the University of Coimbra.
