  • This study proposes a two-dimensional hyperbolic soil spring model for mat foundations in clays subjected to vertically uniform loads to simplify the complexity of three-dimensional finite element analysis on mat foundations. The solutions from three-dimensional finite element analysis were examined to determine the hyperbolic model parameters of the soil springs underneath the slab. Utilizing these model parameters, normalized functions across the middle section of the mat were obtained. The solutions from the proposed model, along with the approximate finite difference analysis of the mat in clays under vertical load, were found to be consistent with those from the three-dimensional finite element analysis. The authors conclude that the proposed method can serve as an alternative for the preliminary design of mat foundations.

  • In civil engineering applications, the establishment of standards and procedures for analysis, design, fabrication, construction, and quality control are essential in facilitating the economic and efficient use of composite materials. Many bridge systems, including girders. cross beams, and concrete decks, function as specially orthotropic plates. in general, the analytical solution for such complex systems is very difficult to achieve. Thus, the finite difference method is used for the analysis of the problem. The rate of tensile strength reduction due to increased size is considered. Strength reduction is necessary to ensure the safe design of building structures. This paper suggests the use of a strength-failure analysis procedure using the reduced tensile strength. A numerical study is conducted for different cases. The Tasi-Wu failure criterion for stress space is also used.

  • Within the French CIFRE research project COMINO, an innovative type of composite beam was developed for buildings that need fire resistance with no additional supports in construction stage. The developed solution is composed of a steel U-shaped beam acting as a formwork in construction stage for a reinforced concrete part that provides the fire resistance. In the exploitation stage, the steel and the reinforced concrete are acting together as a composite beam. This paper presents the investigation made on the load bearing capacity of this new developed steel-concrete composite section. A full-scale test has been carried out at the Laboratory of Structural Engineering of the University of Luxembourg. The paper presents the configuration of the specimen, the fabrication process and the obtained test results. The beam behaved compositely and exhibited high ductility and bending resistance. The shear connection in the tension zone was effective. The beam failed by a separation between the slab and the beam at high deformations, excessive shear forces conducted to a failure of the stirrups in this zone. The test results are then compared with good agreement to analytical methods of design based on EN 1994 and design guidelines are given.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of expressionism in the space of deconstructive architecture by comparing the spaces of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" video with the expressionist characteristics of film narrative structure and expressionist architecture and making an expansion based on the results. The findings were as follows: first, the "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" is divided into two set spaces: one has the perspective representation distorted in the viewpoint of a mad person applied to it, and the other reflects the viewpoint of a normal person from medieval paintings with no perspective. Second, the expressionist buildings did not reflect the expressionist characteristics in the interior spaces as fully as in the exterior ones. Third, the incomplete combination of Signifiant and $Signifi{\acute{e}}$, which were the theoretical basis of deconstructive architecture, showed a tendency of binary opposition like the double narrative structure of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." Fourth, deconstructive architecture seems to embody the exterior form and interior space of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" and its set spaces in the phenomenal aspect but exhibits its limitations with the realization of dynamics, one of the characteristics of expressionism. Finally, the Seattle Public Library presents the best embodiment of expressionist characteristics found in the set spaces of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" while seeking after the combination of horizontal and vertical paths of action through the spiral ramps and inclined slabs.

  • The purpose of this comparative study is to analyze the characteristics of art museums of Louis I. Kahn. Kahn's main architectural thoughts of 'what it wants to be' and 'how it was done' act as a basis for this research. 'What it wants to be' means the existence of architecture and relates to the concept of 'room'. 'How it was done' shows the tectonic aspects of architecture and construction process to enhance its presence. Detailed items from these two thoughts applied to clarify the order in dynamics, the visualization of construction process, and the relationship between structure and light in the space of Kahn's art museums. Yale university art gallery was the first major project of Kahn and he showed tectonic characters through tetrahedral concrete slab. The unity of structure, space and light can be found in the Kimbell art museum through the vaulted structural unit. Yale center for British art is the best example of the concept of 'room' and 'tectonic' because it clearly shows the unity of spatial and structural system, and their relation to light. As a result, this study tries to find out that Kahn had consistently developed his thoughts of'room' and 'tectonic', and tried to keep them in his art museum designs.

  • A realistic FEM structural model is developed to predict the behavior, load transfer, force distribution and performance of a riverine platform under earthquake and environmental loads. The interaction between the transfer plate and the piles supporting the platform is investigated. Transfer plate structures have the ability to redistribute the loads from the superstructure above to piles group below, to provide safe transits of loads to piles group and thus to the soil, without failure of soil or structural elements. The distribution of piles affects the distribution of stress on both soil and platform. A materially nonlinear earthquake response spectrum analysis was performed on this riverine platform subjected to earthquake and environmental loads. A fixed connection between the piles and the platform is better in the design of the piles and the prospect of piles collapse is low while a hinged connection makes the prospect of damage high because of the larger displacements. A fixed connection between the piles and the platform is the most demanding case in the design of the platform slab (transfer plate) because of the high stress values developed.

  • Recently the more stable roadbed is required due to the high speed and design load. Therefore the reinforced roadbed was introduced as the solution. But the thickness and stiffness of reinforced roadbed in design code is being conservatively assessed by the foreign code without considering the domestic construction condition. In this paper, adequate Young's modulus, drain capacity, freezing depth, economical efficiency, bearing capacity, construction condition and 3-D finite element method were employed to determine the proper thickness of reinforced roadbed at the embankment section.

  • The purpose of this study is to accomplished an in-site evaluation method for existing building insulation status using Infra-red camera and to consider improvement performance to prevent condensation and draw the optimum insulation design method for building using simulation tool. The research contents of this study are to evaluate validity and suitability of building insulation defect survey using Infra-red camera for apartment housing with temperature and heat flow pattern analyze method. Based on this research, the three corners, weak part in condensation, were selected in apartment building and conducted simulation by three-dimensional steady state. From the results, it is required to strengthen insulation design, and it is founded that existing insulation system typically applied to most Korean apartment housings have serious insulation defect that insulation is disconnected by structural components at the joints of wall-slab and wall-wall in envelope. Thus, it is considerate to need a concrete technology improvement.

  • A recent development of seismic design, which is required among environmentally friendly members, increased the concern on light-weight concrete. Extending around the building, the structural design which is applied for light-weight concrete has been increased. This study therefore evaluates the bending resistance and the shear resistance involved using four specimens that were manufactured and tested. The parameters used in this study exist. This study investigates the structural performance of composite slab using light-weight concrete with KCI (2007).

  • The law about floor impact sound goes into effect from March 23th in 2004 and is applying to new designs. According to the new law, the minimal of slab thickness is 180mm by standard floor structure and the new law presents about the minimal standard about heavy-weight impact sound. Also, It presents about classification of light-weight sound separate the minimal standard, so demand of consumers can be accepted. But a working plan of classification about light-weight sound is not presented in accordance with field test, so the problem that design can't be achieved although the aim of design is formed. This study shows contents to investigate for working of classification and will be helpful to designers and construction corporations.
