The Stability of Bridge Abutment Reinforced by Pile-slab on Soft Ground Undergoing Lateral Flow (측방유동 연약지반상 파일슬래브로 보강된 교대의 안정)

  • A site investigation has been performed for bridge abutments constructed on soft ground, which are deformed laterally by backfill. As the result from the evaluation of lateral movement in bridge abutment, the foundation piles were not considered as the passive pile at the design stage and the period for soft ground improvement was not proper. In order to prevent lateral movement of bridge abutment, the pile slab is proposed as a countermeasure. This method can effectively prevent the lateral flow of soft ground, since the overburden surcharge due to backfill on soft ground would be effectively delivered to bedrock through the piles in soft ground. The instrumentation system is designed and installed to investigate the behavior of bridge abutment on soft ground reinforced by pile slab. The instrumentation results show that pile slab effectively resists to the lateral movement of bridge abutment due to backfill. Also, the surcharge loads due to backfill are transmitted to the bedrock through piles. It confirms that the pile slab effectively resists to the lateral movement of bridge abutment due to backfill and the applied design method is reasonable.

A Case Study on the Reduction Costs Prediction of a Reinforced Concrete Bridge using LCC method (Life Cycle Cost 기법에 의한 RC Slab 교량의 절감비용 예측에 관한 연구)

  • This study predicts Life Cycle Cost of RC Slab bridge case in maintenance and operation level and calculated economic efficiency by the avoidable costs of a bridge. This result of the study can be summarized as follow: (1) LCC analysis model on the bridge case is suggested. (2) Maintenance and operation level of a bridge have been divided, and LCC of the bridge case has been predicted at current maintenance and operation level and required maintenance and operation level. (3) Reduction costs is predicted by LCC of the bridge case, and its economic efficiency is calculated.

Flexural & Fatigue Evaluation of Link Slab for Continuous Girder-Type Precast Modular Bridges (거더형식 프리캐스트 모듈러교량 연속화 지점부에 적용되는 연결슬래브의 휨성능 및 피로성능 평가)

  • The modular technology has been already applied in automotive industry, plant and shipbuilding industry. Recently, the modular technology was applied in bridge construction. The modular bridge is different from the existing precast bridges in terms of standardized design that the detailed design of members is omitted by using the standard modules; the design of the modular bridge is completed by only assembling the standard modules without design in member level. The girder-type precast modular bridge has been developed as a simply supported bridge. The girder-type precast modular bridge could be applied to the multi-span bridges through the continuity method. The continuity of the girder-type precast modular bridge is achieved by using the link slab which is easy to construction and appropriate to the rapid construction. The link slabs have been used as the type of reinforced concrete structure in US from the 1950's. In 2000's, the link slab using the engineered cementitious concrete (ECC link slab) has been developed. In this study, the RC type link slab which is more reproducible and economic relative to the ECC link slab was used for the continuity of the girder-type precast modular bridges, and the construction detail of RC type link slab was modified. In addition, the modified iterative design method of RC type link slab was proposed in this study. To verify the proposed design method, the flexural tests were conducted using the RC type link slab specimens. Also, the fatigue test using the mock-up specimen was conducted with cyclic loading condition up to two million cycles.

Analysis of effects of shrinkage of concrete added to widen RC girder bridge

  • Traffic flow capacity of some old road bridges is insufficient due to limited deck width. In such cases bridge deck widening is a common solution. For multi-girder reinforced concrete (RC) bridges it is possible to add steel-concrete composite girders as the new outermost girders. The deck widening may be combined with bridge strengthening thanks to thickening of the existing deck slab. Joint action of the existing and the added parts of such bridge span must be ensured. It refers especially to the horizontal plane at the interface of the existing slab and the added concrete layer as well as to the vertical planes at the external surfaces of the initially outermost girders where the added girders are connected to the existing bridge span. Since the distribution of the added concrete is non-uniform in the span cross-section the structure is particularly sensitive to the added concrete shrinkage. The shrinkage induces shear forces in the aforementioned planes. Widening of a 12 m long RC multi-girder bridge span is numerically analysed to assess the influence of the added concrete shrinkage. The analysis results show that: a) in the vertical plane of the connection of the added and the existing deck slab the longitudinal shear due to the shrinkage of the added concrete is comparable with the effect of live load, b) it is necessary to provide appropriate longitudinal reinforcement in the deck slab over the added girders due to tension induced by the shrinkage of the added concrete.

The use of eccentric beam elements in the analysis of slab-on-girder bridges

  • With the advent of computer, the finite element method has become a most powerful numerical method for structural analysis. However, bridge designers are reluctant to use it in their designs because of its complex nature and its being time consuming in the preparation of the input data and analyzing the results. This paper describes the development of a computer based finite element model using the idea of eccentric beam elements for the analysis of slab-on-girder bridges. The proposed method is supported by a laboratory test using a reinforced concrete bridge model. Other bridge analytical schemes are also introduced and compared with the proposed method. The main aim of the comparison is to prove the effectiveness of the shell and eccentric beam modelling in the studies of lateral load distribution of slab-on-girder bridges. It is concluded that the proposed finite element method gives a closer to real idealization and its developed computer program, SHECAN, is also very simple to use. It is highly recommended to use it as an analytical tool for the design of slab-on-girder bridges.

Damage assessment of shear connectors with vibration measurements and power spectral density transmissibility

  • Shear connectors are generally used to link the slab and girders together in slab-on-girder bridge structures. Damage of shear connectors in such structures will result in shear slippage between the slab and girders, which significantly reduces the load-carrying capacity of the bridge. Because shear connectors are buried inside the structure, routine visual inspection is not able to detect conditions of shear connectors. A few methods have been proposed in the literature to detect the condition of shear connectors based on vibration measurements. This paper proposes a different dynamic condition assessment approach to identify the damage of shear connectors in slab-on-girder bridge structures based on power spectral density transmissibility (PSDT). PSDT formulates the relationship between the auto-spectral densities of two responses in the frequency domain. It can be used to identify shear connector conditions with or without reference data of the undamaged structure (or the baseline). Measured impact force and acceleration responses from hammer tests are analyzed to obtain the frequency response functions at sensor locations by experimental modal analysis. PSDT from the slab response to the girder response is derived with the obtained frequency response functions. PSDT vectors in the undamaged and damaged states can be compared to identify the damage of shear connectors. When the baseline is not available, as in most practical cases, PSDT vectors from the measured response at a reference sensor to those of the slab and girder in the damaged state can be used to detect the damage of shear connectors. Numerical and experimental studies on a concrete slab supported by two steel girders are conducted to investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach. Identification results demonstrate that damages of shear connectors are identified accurately and efficiently with and without the baseline. The proposed method is also used to evaluate the conditions of shear connectors in a real composite bridge with in-field testing data.

Finite element modeling of a deteriorated R.C. slab bridge: lessons learned and recommendations

  • The test results from non-destructive and destructive field testing of a three-span deteriorated reinforced concrete slab bridge are used as a vehicle to examine the reliability of available tools for finite-element analysis of in-situ structures. Issues related to geometric modeling of members and connections, material models, and failure criteria are discussed. The results indicate that current material models and failure criteria are adequate, although lack of inelastic out-of-plane shear response in most nonlinear shell elements is a major shortcoming that needs to be resolved. With proper geometric modeling, it is possible to adequately correlate the measured global, regional, and local responses at all limit states. However, modeling of less understood mechanisms, such as slab-abutment connections, may need to be finalized through a system identification technique. In absence of the experimental data necessary for this purpose, upper and lower bounds of only global responses can be computed reliably. The studies reaffirm that success of finite-element models has to be assessed collectively with reference to all responses and not just a few global measurements.

An Experimental Study on Reinforced Effect Using Double Adhensive Panels in Bridge Deck Slabs (프리케스트판을 이용한 교량상판 단면증설 보강공법에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics and reinforcement effects of restored the RC bridge deck with small precast panel through static load tests and to provide the basic information for the damaged slab decks. In the tests for realizing movement of general RC bridge slabs, 6 samples are prepared and tested. All reinforced samples are restored with 1 or 2-layers precast panels by epoxy mortar. The movement of restored slabs is analyzed and compared with the behavior of non-restored slabs. In result of these tests, tension cracks due to bending moment are show, and after static load test there happens finally a punching shear failure, which is the general type of RC bridge failure. The tests show that restoration of the RC slab results in increasing of loading capacity about 30~50% an restoring panels are stick to slab and moving with slab under loading test.

Analysis of Prestressed Concrete Slab Bridge by the Beam Theory (보 이론에 의한 PSC 슬래브 교량의 해석)

  • A prestressed concrete slab bridge is analyzed by the specially orthotropic laminates theory. Both the geometry and the material of the cross section of the slab are considered symmetrical with respect to the mid-surface so that the bending extension coupling stiffness, $B_{ij}=0$, and $D_{16}=D_{26}=0$. Each longitudinal and transverse steel layer is regarded as a lamina, and material constants of each lamina is calculated by the use of rule of mixture. This bridge with simple support is under uniformly distributed vertical and axial loads. In this paper, the finite difference method and the beam theory are used for analysis. The result of beam analysis is modified to obtain the solution of the plate analysis.

  • The concrete track on bridge should be designed to effectively cope with the behavior of the bridge superstructure. For this purpose, in general, shear keys are designed to be installed at a certain intervals on the bridge deck, and the track slab is cast on these shear keys to transfer the load induced by the relative displacement between track and bridge. In this study, to apply the precast concrete slab track on bridge, a shear key structure and its effective installation method are presented. Also, the structural behavior of this shear key has been evaluated by the laboratory mock-up test.
