Near Infrared spectroscopy (NIR) used on human skin measurement was explored in the past decade. Many publications in different journals and magazines discussed the feasibility of the NIR technique for cosmetic product property studies. Based upon the results of pioneers, we have pursued some work of the NIR instrument coupled with a probe module for skin measurement in vivo and vitro. In part I of this paper, the specific Near Infrared spectroscopy instrument stability, human subject conditions and other parameters, which could affect the measurements reproducibility are discussed. Second derivative NIR spectra and Principle Components Analysis (PCA) are utilised for data interpretation. In part II of this paper, the relationship of human skin moisture and ageing, the gender information and finally, the discovery of penetration depth of NIR incident light on skin are reported. A theoretical penetration depth calculation equation is proposed. In part III, the study results of a couple of commercial skin care products effect will be described. The skin lotions were applied on human skin (in vivo) in order to exam the NIR feasibility to monitor the changes of moisture level. The results are consistently positive. From our primary study, it can conclude that the NIR is potentially a very powerful instrument for skin condition diagnostics, either for cosmetic and/or for medication purposes.
Over the past 15 years productive BCI research programs have arisen. Current mainstream EEG electrode setups permit efficient recordings but most of electrodes has the disadventages of need for skin preparation and gel application to correctly record signals. The new gel-free probe was adapted for EEG recording and it can be fixed to the scalp with the micro needle without neuro-gel. It use standard EEG cap for wearing electrodes on scalp so it is compatible with standard EEG electrodes. A comparison between electrode characteristics is achieved by performing simultaneous recordings with the gel electrodes and gel-free probe placed in parallel scalp positions on the same anatomical regions. The quality of EEG recordings for all two types of experimental conditions is similar for gel-electrodes and gel-free probe. Subjects also reported not having special tactile sensations associated with wearing of gel-free probes. According to our results, it is expected that gel-free probe can be adapted to BCI, BMI(Brain Machine Interface), HMI(Human Machine Interface) because of its simple application and comfortable wearing process.

This paper aims to compare the ability to detect notch defects existing in the plate and welded area using a flexible ECA (eddy current array) probe with OmniScan MX and MS-5800E. The characteristics of signals with various frequencies and lift-offs were also compared. As a result, when signals of frequencies 500, 1000, and 1500 kHz were used, the amplitude of the signal increased, as the depth of the notch increased, but reduced linearly in accordance with the lift-off variation. In addition, the detection sensitivity of the weld defect was found to be closely related to the contact surface of the probe and specimen. In this paper, it was demonstrated that the detection sensitivity was excellent when the contact surface of the probe and the specimen was sufficient, but it was poor when the contact surface was insufficient.

Purpose : Aging is reflected on the face of women due to the depletion of collagen and hydration in the facial skin overtime. This study investigated the effect of multiple SONO® ultrasound for a 4-week period on the skin health by measuring the skin elasticity and deeper skin elasticity in the tested women subjects. Methods : Twenty healthy women were recruited for this experiment. All the participants applied multiple ultrasound device (SONO®) during this experiment. The SONO® device was set to ANTI-AGING function and five power steps such as 1, 3, 10 and 17 MHz were used during this experiment, and directly contacted with the facial skin. Specifically, the probe was contacted with the entire face except for the nose and eyes for 10 min on each side of the face every day and repeated for 4 weeks. The skin elasticity and the elasticity of deeper skin were measured at three times (0, 2, 4 weeks) using a Ballistometer and dermal torque meter, respectively. The one way repeated ANOVA was used to compare the skin elasticity and the elasticity of deeper skin among three times (0, 2, 4 weeks). Results : The skin elasticity (p<.05) and elasticity of deeper skin (p<.05) were significantly increased at 2 weeks and 4 weeks of intervention compared to that at 0 weeks. For the skin elasticity, there was no significant difference between 2 and 4 weeks of intervention (p>.05). For the elasticity of deeper skin, it increased significantly at 4 weeks compared to 2 weeks of intervention (p<.05). Conclusion : These findings suggest that applying multiple SONO® ultrasound to the facial skin of healthy women for 4 weeks, can increase the skin elasticity and elasticity of deeper skin by supporting epidermal hydration and dermal collagen production.
This paper describes the basic design and fabrication of smart skin antenna for phased array applications. The smart skin phased array antenna, of which radiation pattern can be electrically steerable without mechanical rotation, has to meet the both mechanical and electrical performance. The smart skin antenna is a honeycomb sandwich structure to enhance the mechanical performance such as strength, weight and so on. The example of smart skin antenna integrated with radome is designed with the resonant frequency of 5 GHz, circular polarization, 2 by 2 subarray, and a coaxial probe-fed excitation. In addition, the performance of raw microstrip patch antenna uncovered radome is investigate. The fabricated smart skin antenna shows a reasonable performance with gain of 12.2 dBi and frequency bandwidth of 6.4 %.

A simultaneous measurement of the wall skin friction and near-wall streamwise velocity fluctuations is performed using hot film and hot wire anemometers to investigate the relation between them. Near-wall turbulence statistics measured with a hot-wire probe are in good agreement with previous results. Turbulence properties of the wall skin friction fluctuations measured with a hot film also show fairly good agreements with those measured by others except that rms level is lower in the present study. Long-time averaged space- time correlations show that the wall skin friction is highly correlated with a turbulence structure which is tilted from the wall in the streamwise direction. Tilting angles are obtained from the phase shifts between the wall skin-friction and streamwise velocity fluctuations. The convection velocity of the near-wall streamwise velocity obtained from the space-time correlation is in good agreement with that from the direct numerical simulation database.
Recently we showed the prototype portable device for the determination of human skin moisture by using near infrared spectroscopy. In order to optimize the acquiring condition of NIR spectrum of skin and control the target information of water depending the site such as epidermis and dermis, skin depth profiling was investigated changing the distance between illuminations and receiving of radiation in the terminal of fiber probe. The colleted light information could be controlled by changing the distance of the fiber optic probes. It was confirmed that the longer distance we used, the deeper site from the skin surface we could get information from in this study. Four kinds of probes with distances such as 0.03 mm, 0.1 mm, 0.5 mm, and 1.0 mm were used. In addition, the gap size from 0.3 mm to 3.0 mm was studied to control the intensity of water absorbance effectively and to avoid saturation of water absorption. We also investigated the reference materials depending the reflectance ratio for water absorption not to be saturated because of the strong absorptivity of water. Furthermore, spectroscopic information regarding free water and bound water around 1850 nm was investigated by using the different distance of fiber optic probes. This study would be great help to control the spectroscopic information of water to be measured depending the site where water exists.
In this study, the performance of a portable NIR system and a FT NIR spectrometer were compared to determine water content of hairless mouse skin. The stratum corneum parts wer e separated from the epidermal tissues by trypsin solution. NIR diffuse reflectance spectra of hairless mouse skin were acquired using a fiber optic probe. In the near infrared, water molecules show two clear absorption bands at 1450 nm from first overtone of O-H stretching and 1940 nm from the combination involving O-H stretching and O-H deformation. It was found that the variations of O-H absorption band according to water content. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was applied to develop a calibration model. The PLS model showed a good correlation between NIR predicted value and the absolute water content of separated hairless mouse skin, in vitro. For both the portable and the FT NIR spectrometer, These studies showed the possibility of a rapid and nondestructive skin moisture measurement using NIR spectroscopy. The portable NIR spectrometer with a photodiode arrays-microsensor could be more rapidly applied for the determination of water content with comparable accuracy with the performance of a FT spectrometer .
Introduction: Since 1996, Dr. James Norman has successfully performed mimimally invasive radio-guided parathyroidectomy(MIRP) using intraoperative nuclear mapping with $^{99m}Tc$ sestamibi scanning and radioactivity detection probe. Objectives: We aimed to introduce this new surgical technique and evaluate it's efficacy by our own experiences. Method: From May to October 1999, five consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism underwent parathyroidectomy by using modified MIRP technique. $^{99m}Tc$ sestamibi scanning was performed 1.0 or 1.5 hour before operation. After intraoperative localization of the tumor under the guidance of quantitative gamma counting with a NEVIGATOR probe, an unilateral small skin incision(3.0-4.0cm) was placed. Without a skin flap, the strap muscle was directly divided with the use of a Harmonic scalpel. After careful dissection, the parathyroid tumor was removed. Result: In all patients, a single adenoma could be easily detected and removed by this new technique. Mean incision length was 3.2cm(3.0-4.0cm) and operative time ranged from 40 to 110minute. All the patients were discharged within 2 days of surgery without any complication. Conclusion: This new operative technique could become the most minimally invasive alternative to the standard operative procedure for parathyroid adenoma.
This paper is the study of the reflectance of light from biological tissue for red and Infrared wavelengths and relates the acquired reflectance data to expected physiological changes within the skin and muscle layers associated with heat and exercise. The instrument was disigned to collect data from the calf muscle in human subjects with probe located at the surface of skin. Rapid data acquisition method allowed monitoring of rapid changes in reflecttance due to a stimulus. This study demonstrates that changes in O2 saturation and blood fractional volume expected within the dermis and muscle layers were asserted by examining the slopes of the plotted index for heat and exercise. The results presented in thls study support the claim that reflectance can separately discriminate between changes of blood volume and oxygenation in muscle and in skin. The data demonstrate the ability to measure consistent changes In tissue optical properties during exercise and heat.
