  • In this paper, a new intensity measure of earthquakes for probabilistic seismic analysis is presented for skewed highway bridges. Three different cases of skewed bridges with different skew angles ($0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$) are considered. Well-known intensity measures (e.g., PGA, $S_a$) are evaluated and critically discussed based on sensitivity analysis: efficiency, practically, proficiency and sufficiency of intensity measures are considered in detail. The analyses demonstrated that the intensity measures have to take into account structural acceleration on a wide range of periods so that a new seismic intensity measure is proposed showing that it has less dispersion compared to others. Since the proposed intensity represents the average value of the $S_a$ (between a lower and upper structural period) it has been called Averaged Spectral Acceleration (ASA). Based on performed incremental dynamic analysis (IDA), the seismic analytical fragility curves of typical skewed highway bridges have been evaluated for different states of damage controlling the low dispersion of the ASA index as well as its proficiency and sufficiency.

  • Clock grid networks are now common in most high performance microprocessors. This paper presents a new effective modeling and simulation methodology for the clock grid using scattering parameter. It also shows the effect of wire width and grid size on the clock skew of the grid. The interconnection of the clock grid is modeled by RC passive elements. The results show that the error is within 10 % comparing to Hspice simulation results.

  • Analysis for structures composed of materials containing regularly spaced in-homogeneities is usually executed by using averaged material properties. In order to evaluate the effective properties, a unit cell is defined and loaded somehow, and its response is investigated. The imposed loading, however, should accord to the status of unit cells immersed in the macroscopic structure to secure the accuracy of the properties. In this study, mathematical description for the periodicity of the displacement field is derived and its direct implementation into FE models of unit cell is attempted. Conventional finite element code needs no modification, and only the boundary of unit cell should be constrained in a way that the periodicity is preserved. The proposed method is applicable to skew arrayed in-homogeneity problems. Homogenized in-plane elastic properties are evaluated for a few representative cases and the accuracy is examined.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of IPMSM(Interior-type Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) are simulated using 2-Dimensional finite element method. This paper deals with the following characteristics: Air gap flux density considering skew. Back E.M.F, Torque and Inductance. Torque is calculated using current angle which is known from the controller. Direct axis inductance and Quadrature axis inductance are also calculated using energy perturbation method. This results can be used for the computation of the saliency of IPMSM. Computed results are found in satisfactory agreement with experimental ones.

  • This study is to present a method for reductin of noise and vibration of home electric motors coupled to the mechanical load causing relatively big amplitude of vibration. The noise and vibration factors have been analysed in the divisions such as the pattern related to the armature reaction, the pattern related to the circulating current by induction and the other patterns those are affected by a dditive magnetic field and have an effect on mechanical constants. From the systematic mutual relations between the patterns and daping effects, it is possible to derive the fundamental measure for reduction of noise and vibration. Vibration measurements and analysis were carried out in accordance with the planned experimentation and thre object model was chosen randomly from the production line in a factory where home electric machines were mass-produced. Based on the above-mentioned fundamental measure, suppression effects on noise and vibration have been analysed according to the number of slots, the amount of rotor skew and the way the stator winding connection was series or parallel.

  • Because of unreplenishable power resources, reducing node energy consumption to extend network lifetime is an important requirement in wireless sensor networks. In addition both path length and path cost are important metrics affecting sensor lifetime. We propose a dynamic clustering scheme based on location in wireless sensor networks. Our scheme can localize the effects of route failures, reduce control traffic overhead, and thus enhance the reachability to the destination. We have evaluated the performance of our clustering scheme through a simulation and analysis. We provide simulation results showing a good performance in terms of approximation ratios.

  • The brushless motor is getting widely applied to the automotive component with the advantage of the high efficiency, high reliability and etc.. Most of the motor applications require the low vibration and acoustic noise. The cogging torque is the one of the main cause of the noise and vibration. The step-skewed rotor is used to reduce the cogging torque. We analyze the characteristics of the step-skewed rotor and non skewed rotor with the same stator by using 2-dimensional FEM. And then we analyze the characteristics variation according to the rotor eccentricity. The prototype is made and tested. As the results, the step-skewed rotor structure reduce the cogging torque and local radial force but it is more sensitive to rotor eccentricity.

  • Free vibration analysis of plates is necessary for the field of structural engineering because of its wide applications in practical life. Free vibration of plates is largely dependent on its thickness, aspect ratios, and boundary conditions. Here we investigate the natural frequencies of simply supported tapered isotropic rectangular plates with internal cutouts using a nine node isoparametric element. The effect of rotary inertia on Eigenfrequencies was demonstrated by calculating with- and without rotary inertia. We found that rotary inertia has a significant effect on thick plates, while rotary inertia term can be ignored in thin plates. Based on comparison with literature data, we propose that the present formulation is capable of yielding highly accurate results. Internal cutouts at various positions in tapered rectangular simply supported plates were also studied. Novel data are also reported for skew taper plates.

  • Abstract This study was conducted to pursue the normalization of frequency distribution by making an approach to the coefficient of skewness to nearly zero through the Box-Cox transformation, to get probable flood flows can be calculated by means of the transformation equation which has been derivated by Box-Cox transformation in the annual maximum series of the applied watersheds. It has been concluded that Box-Cox transfromation is proved to be more efficient than logarithmic, square root and SMEMAX transformation which is based on the trigonometric solution of a right triangle whose three verteces repesent the smallest, median and largest observed values of a population in making the coefficient of skewness nearer to zero. Consequently it is shown that probable flood flows according to the return period based on Box-Cox transformation are closer to the observed data as compared to other methods including SMEMAX transformation and fitted probability distributions such as the three parameter lognormal and the type I extremal distribution for the applied watersheds.

  • We applied PIV method to obtain instantaneous and ensemble averaged velocity fields from the first row to the fifth row of a staggered tube bundle. The Reynolds number based on the tube diameter and the maximum velocity was set to be 4,000. Remarkably different natures are observed in the developing bundle flow. Such differences are depicted in the mean recirculating bubble length and the vorticity distributions. The jet-like flow seems to be a dominant feature after the second row and usually skew. However, the ensemble averaged fields show symmetric profiles and the flow characteristics between the third and fourth measuring planes are not so different. comparison between the PIV data and the RANS simulation yields severe disagreement in spite of the same Reynolds number. It can be explained that the distinct jet-like unsteady motions are not to be accounted in th steady numerical analysis.
