  • To clarify the bloom pattern and species succession in phytoplankton community, the population dynamics with the determination of physico-chemical factors have been studies in Masan Bay, the south sea of Korea, for the periods November 2003-October 2004. Concentration of $NH_4-N$ was always higher than that of $NO_3-N$, which was similar level as compared to other costal areas. $PO_4-P$ concentration was lower than those in other coastal areas but similar to oligotrophic environments. Thus, phosphate seems the limiting nutrient rather than nitrogen. $SiO_2-Si$ concentration was also low as compared to other costal areas. Si:P ratio was low from autumn to winter, suggesting silicate and/or phosphate limitation during this period. The cell density of phytoplankton was high in winter 2003 and early autumn 2004. The carbon biomass was high in winter 2003 and summer 2004. And chlorophyll-a concentration was high in late autumn 2003 and summer 2004. Among 78 species of phytoplankton found in the bay during the investigated period, dominant species were two diatoms of Cylindrotheca closterium, Skeletonema costatum, and three dinoflagellates of Heterocapsa triquetra, Prorocentrum minimum, P. triestinum, and one raphidophyte of Heterosigma akashiwo. P. minimum dominated from late autumn to winter, but it was replaced by H. triquetra in late winter. P. triestinum dominated from late spring to early summer. Simultaneously, H. akashiwo cell density steadily increased, and it became dominant with C. closterium in late summer. With decreasing of H. akashiwo and C. closterium, S. costatum became the most dominant species in autumn. The canonical analyses showed that total phytoplankton cell density related to diatom cell density and it was affected by temperature, and concentrations of $NO_3-N\;and\;PO_4-P$. The carbon bio-mass and $chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ concentration related to diatom- and dinoflagellate cell densities and these were affected by flagellate cell density, salinity, and concentrations of $SiO_2-Si\;and\;PO_4-P$. Last six years monitoring data in Masan city obtained from Korean Meteorological Agency indicates gradual increase in air temperature. And the precipitation decreased especially in spring season. The winter bloom found in 2003 may be caused by the increase in the temperature and this bloom subsequently induced the nutrients depletion, which continued until next spring probably due to no precipitation. Therefore, the spring bloom, which had been usually observed in the bay, might disappear in 2004.

  • We studied spatial and temporal distributions of the phytoplankton and their relationships to physico-chemical environmental factors in the western Jinhae Bay, Korea from November 2003 to August 2004. In most cases, physico-chemical environmental factors showed homogeneous distribution. The phytoplankton communities were composed of mainly diatoms and dinoflagellates, and their standing crops ranged from $16{\times}10^3\;cells\;l^{-1}\;to\;5,845{\times}10^3\;cells\;l^{-1}$ (with a mean value of $555{\times}10^3\;cells\;l^{-1}$). The bloom of phytoplankton was observed in Gohyun Port in the summer. Seasonal variation of phytoplankton standing crops was higher in winter and summer than in spring and autumn. The dominant species were Skeletonema costatum, Akashiwo sanguinea, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Dactyliosolen sp., Leptocylindrus danicus, cryptomonads and etc. Especially, S. costatum was predominant in the summer and A. sanguinea (spring and autumn), Pseudo-nitzschia sp. (summer), Guinardia striata (spring), unidentified flagellates (summer) and cryptomonads (spring) appeared to be an opportunistic species. Concentrations of Chl a ranged from $0.6{\mu}g{\cdot}l^{-1}\;to\;16.7{\mu}g{\cdot}l^{-1}$ (with a mean value of $3.4{\mu}g{\cdot}l^{-1}$). The results of the canonical correspondence analysis implies the study area was grouped into the 2 water masses (inner and outer waters of Gohyun Port) and inner waters had higher abundance and Chl a concentration than outer waters. Also, phytoplankton sanding crops were related with temperature, DO and nutrients ($SiO^2$, TN, TP and etc.) in inner waters. Inner water-mass of Gohyun Port expanded between Gacho Is. and Chilchon Is. during the winter.

  • Monthly observation of phytoplankton were made from September, 1974 to June 1975 at three stations in the Masan Bay. Sixty three species of phytoplankton (diatoms), representing 25 genera were taken in this study. Of these Skeletonema costatum, Eucampis zoodiacus, Ditylum brightwellii, Chaetoceros debilis, Coscinosira polychorda, and Leptocylindrus danicus were the dominant species in this area. By the ecological division the neritic species occupied 85.71% of total diatom diversity and it showed the characteristics of emayment. Diversity index(H) were the lowest in January and May in surface, while the highest in October. Phytoplankton standing crop varied extensively by months; ranging from 3,780 to 7,642,798 cells/l. total phytoplankton standing crop showed three major peaks in September, December and May. After bloom diatom standing crop were decreased gradually and showed minimum in November and February.

  • This study investigates the oxidative degradation of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a probable human carcinogen, by advanced oxidation process (i.e., UV process). The experiments were performed with various pH, initial concentration, UV intensity, and addition of $H_2O_2$ or $TiO_2$ on UV process. The results showed that the direct UV photolysis was the most effective treatment method. The lower pH, intial concentration and higher intensity of UV stimulated higher NDMA removal. However, addition of oxidant ($H_2O_2$, $TiO_2$) slows down photochemical treatment of NDMA since the oxidant can filter out the UV light and block it to reach the NDMA molecules. Dimethylamine (DMA) and nitrite were found to be a major byproduct from NDMA oxidation. To evaluate the chronic toxicity effects of UV-treated NDMA on the growth of microalgae, "Skeletonema costatum", was studied as long term experiments. Results demonstrated that after the 13 days exposure the chronic toxicity was decreased about 15% with application of UV process on NDMA degradation.

  • Based on both field and laboratory experiments, seasonal changes in the species composition and abundance of phytoplankton in the gut contents of the jedo venus clam, Protothaca jedoensis, and its feeding selectivity were investigated. The phytoplankton in the gut contents comprised Bacillariophyceae (diatom), Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, and Dinophyceae, of which the diatoms being the most predominant throughout the year. Although the number of species and the abundance of phytoplankton in the sea water were always more diverse and more abundant than in the gut contents, the relative number and abundance were generally similar in the seawater and in the gut contents. In the laboratory experiments, the relative abundances of Coscinodiscus marginatus and Thalassirosira eccentrica were much more higher in the gut contents than any other algal species, while Paralia sulcata, Skeletonema costatum, and Eucampia zodiacus were abundant in order of cell density in the ambient water. These results suggest that P. jedoensis may feed preferably on single algal cell or smaller chains of algal cells.

  • We examined the impacts of anthyopogenic pollutant (benzo〔a〕pyrene) on the growth and photosynthesis of five marine phytoplankton species (Skeletonema costatum, Heterosigma akashiwo, Prorocentrum dentatum, P. minimum, Aknshiwo sanguinea), which are dominant in Korean coastal water. After the 72 h exposure to benzo〔a〕pyrene, the dramatic decrease in cell numbers was observed in the range of 1 to 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ for S. costatum, P. minimum, P. dentatum, whereas for A. sanguinea and H. akashiwo at the low concentrations 0.1 to 1 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ . Among the 5 phytoplankton species, the highest growth inhibition concentration ($IC_{50}$/) was 6.20 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ for P. minimum, followed by 2.14 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ for P. dentatum, 1.68 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ for S. costatum, 0.74 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ for H. akashiwo, 0.10 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ for A. sanguinea. The five species exposed to the low concentration of 1 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ were recovered after transferring to new media, but the species exposed to the high concentrations of 10 and 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ were not recovered, with the exception of P. minimum. Those results indicate that the thecate dinoflagellate P. minimum is most tolerant to the chemical and the athecate dinoflagellate A. sanguinea is not. Geneyally, the cell-specific photosynthetic capacity of H. akashiwo exposed to the low concentrations of 0.1 and 1 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ was higher than that of the cells in the control, whereas the cells exposed to the high concentrations of 5 and 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ showed the negligible photosynthetic level by the first few days of the experiment. In the case of the cells exposed to the concentration of 5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ , after 12 days of the experiment the photosynthetic capacity was increased toward the end of the experiment. This indicates that H. akashiwo may utilize the benzo〔a〕pyrene as a carton source for its growth when exposed to low concentrations. Results suggest that anthropogenic pollutants such as benzo〔a〕pyrene may have significant influence on the succession of phytoplankton species composition and the primary production in coastal marine environments.

  • The survival of the early larvae of the freshwater crab, E. japonicus, fed on different diets at 22土1$^{\circ}C$ and 24$\pm$1% were studied in the laboratory. The larvae in the control (no feed) lived for 4 days (1~2 zoeal stages), and in the experimental container of non-living foods (egg Powder, soy bean Powder, Pellet Powder, millet Powder, and mussel meat), they were lived for 7~9 days (2~3 zoeal stages), When the larvae fed on phytoplankton (Chlorella ellipsoid., Skeletonema costatum. and Chaetoceros gracilis), they lived for 10, 18, and 19 days(3~5 zoeal stages), and fed on zooplankton (Artemianauplii and rotifer), they were reached to the juvenile stage in 24 and 25 days, respectivily. When the larvae fed on a mixed diets (see table 1). it was more effective than a single food diet, and the most effective diets included Chaetoceros gracilis, Artemia nauplii and rotifera, in which the larvae reached the juvenile stage in 22 days, and the survival was 73%.

  • The spatio-temporal distribution and seasonal fluctuations of phytoplankton community were carried out in the Southwestern parts of Deukryang Bay of the Korean South Sea from July 1997 to January 1998. A total of 60 species of phytoplankton belonging to 41 genera was identified. In the southwestern parts of Deukryang Bay seasonal succession in dominant species; Eucampia zodiacus, and Chaetoceros spp. in summer, Nitzschia longissima, Chaetoceros curvisetus and Bacillaria paxillifera in autumn, Skeletonema costatum and B. paxillifera in winter, were very predominant. The community structure of phytoplankton in the southwestern parts of Deukryang Bay appeared to be diverse in species composition, and diatoms were most dominant through the year. Phytoplankton standing crops fluctuated with an annual mean of $1.2{\times}10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$ between the lowest value of $8.0{\times}10^3$ cells $L^{-1}$ in January and the highest value of $6.9{\times}10^5$cells $L^{-1}$ by Nitzschia longissima in January. Densities of the phytoplankton cell number by the samples of the southwestern parts of Deukryang Bay ranged from $1.1{\times}10^4$ cells $L^{-1}$ to $1.3{\times}10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$ with the mean value of $4.1{\times}10^4$ cells $L^{-1}$ in summer, from $1.0{\times}10^4$ cells $L^{-1}$ to $6.9{\times}10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$ with mean of $1.8{\times}10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$ in autumn, from $8.0{\times}10^3$ cells $L^{-1}$ to $4.6{\times}10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$ with mean $1.6{\times}10^5$ cells $L^{-1}$ in winter. That is to say, phytoplankton standing crops was high in low temperature seasons, while low in high temperature seasons. Chlorophyll a concentration fluctuated between 1.08 mg $m^{-3}$ and 21.6 mg $m^{-3}$ in January. In the southwestern parts of Deukryang Bay temporal change in chl-a concentration was not apparent. But chl-a concentration was high during a year. Therefore, phytoplankton production in the southwestern parts of Deukryang Bay could be very high year-round.

  • We investigated the seasonal succession of phytoplankton assemblages in the eastern part of the South Sea of Korea in relation to surface water masses. The study areas are under the direct influence of the Tsushima Warm Current (TCW) throughout the whole year, with its strength known to be seasonally variable. The region is also influenced by coastal waters (CW) driven from the South Sea of Korea and East China Sea, particularly in summer, as indicated by low salinity in the surface water. Nutrient property of the TCW can reveals whether the origin of the TCW is the nutrient-rich Kuroshio Current or the oligotropic Taiwan Warm Current. Surface chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations displayed a large seasonal variation for all stations, with high values found in spring and autumn and low values in summer and winter. At station M (offshore) and P (intermediate location between M and R), Chl-a concentrations in October were higher than those in March, when spring bloom normally occurs. This may be related to deeper mixed layer depths in October. Diatoms dominated under conditions of high nutrient supply in which Chaetoceros spp. and Skeletonema costatum-like spp. were abundant. S. costatum-like spp. dominated at stations R (onshore station) and P in December when there was greater nutrient supply, especially of phosphate. Flagellates and dinoflagellates dominated at all three stations after diatoms blooms. Dominant species were Scrippsiella trochoid in April and Ceratium furca in October at station R, and Gyrodinium spp. and Gymnodinium spp. at station M during summer, when the effect of the oligotropic Taiwan Warm Current and the oligotropic coastal water from East China Sea were strong. Redundancy analysis showed clear seasonal successions in the phytoplankton community and environmental conditions, in which both principal components 1 and 2 accounted for 69.6% of total variance. Our results suggested that environmental conditions seemed to be determined by the origin of the TCW and the relative seasonal strength of the water masses of the TCW and CW, which may affect phytoplankton growth and compositions in the study area.
