  • Recently, conventional superscalar RISC processors arrive their performance limit, and many researches on the next-generation architecture are concentrated on SMT(Simultaneous Multi-Threading). In SMT processors, multiple threads are executed simultaneously and share hardware resources dynamically. In this case, it is more important to supply instructions from multiple threads to processor core efficiently than ever. Because SMT architecture shows higher IPC(Instructions per cycle) than superscalar architecture, performance is influenced by fetch bandwidth and the size of fetch queue. Moreover, to use TLP(Thread Level Parallelism) efficiently, fetch thread selection algorithm and fetch bandwidth for each selected threads must be carefully designed. Thus, in this paper, the performance values influenced by these factors are analyzed. Based on the results, an optimal instruction fetch strategy for SMT processors is proposed.

  • Pipe jacking is a name for a method to excavate a tunnel by pushing pipe into the ground from an especial pit. Size of tunnels in this method is different from under 900mm (microtunneling) to more than 3,000mm. Method of excavation is also different from hand digging to use of any kind of tunnel boring machines such as slurry and earth pressure balance (EPB) machines. Slurry pipe jacking was firmly established as a special method for the nondisruptive construction of the underground tunnels in urban area. During the pipe jacking and microtunneling process, the jacking load is an important parameter, controlling the pipe wall thickness, need to and location of intermediate jacking station, selection of jacking frame and lubrication requirements. The main component of the jacking load is due to frictional resistance. In this paper the skin friction between pipe surface and surrounding condition also lubricant quality based on a few fundamental tests, were considered. During this study unconfined compressive strength test, dynamic friction measurement test and direct shear box test were raised for one of the largest diameter slurry pipe jacking project in Fujisawa city in Japan. It could be concluded that in slurry pipe jacking, prediction of frictional forces are mainly dependent on successful lubrication, its quality and lubricant strength parameters. Conclusions from this study can be used for the same experiences.

  • Mobile devices are becoming powerful enough to realize augmented reality (AR) application. This paper introduces two AR methods to estimate an environmental illumination distribution of a scene. In the first method, we extract the lighting direction and intensity from input images captured with a front-side camera of a mobile device, using its orientation sensor. The second method extracts shadow regions cast by three dimensional (3D) AR marker of known shape and size. Because previous methods examine per pixel shadow intensity, their performances are much affected by the number of sampling points, positions, and threshold values. By using a simple binary operation between the previously clustered shadow regions and the threshold real shadow regions, we can compute efficiently their relative area proportions according to threshold values. This area-based method can overcome point sampling problem and threshold value selection. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed methods generate natural image with multiple smooth shadows in real-time.

  • While single-user spatial multiplexing multiple-input multiple-output (SU-MIMO) allows spatially multiplexed data streams to be transmitted to one node at a time, multi-user spatial multiplexing MIMO (MU-MIMO) enables the simultaneous transmission to multiple nodes. However, if the transmission time required to send packets to each node varies considerably, MU-MIMO may fail to utilize the available MIMO capacity to its full potential. The transmission time typically depends upon two factors: the link quality of the selected channel and the data length (packet size). To utilize the cumulative capacity of multiple channels in MIMO applications, the assignment of channels to each node should be controlled according to the measured channel quality or the transmission queue status of the node.A MAC protocol design that can switch between MU-MIMO and multiple SU-MIMO transmissions by considering the channel quality and queue status information prior to the actual data transmission (i.e., by exchanging control packets between transmitter and receiver pairs) could address such issues in a simple but in attractive way. In this study, we propose a new MAC protocol that is capable of performing such switching and thereby improve the system performance of very high throughput WLANs. The detailed performance analysis demonstrates that greater benefits can be obtained using the proposed scheme, as compared to conventional MU-MIMO transmission schemes.

  • RIM(Reaction Injection Molding) is a widely used method to manufacture middle-large size outfit-part for a prototype car. The main advantage of RIM is the capability of manufacturing a small number of prototype parts with less cost and lead time than injection molding which is the most popular method to manufacture plastic parts. Generally, epoxy resin and RTV(Room Temperature Vulcanization) silicon are used as mold materials for RIM, and the selection of mold materials is usually depended upon the industrial environment of manufactures and it decides overall mold making process and part quality. This paper suggests a new mold making process by consolidating the advantages of epoxy resin and RTV silicon based RIM mold to enhance the parts quality while reducing the manufacturing cost and time and shows the competitiveness of the suggested process compared with conventional methods.

  • This study evaluates seismic performance of the school buildings with the selected template designs in Turkey considering nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete components. Six school buildings with template designs were selected to represent major percentage of school buildings in medium-size cities located in high seismic region of Turkey. Selection of template designed buildings and material properties were based on field investigation on government owned school buildings in several cities in western part of Turkey. Capacity curves of investigated buildings were determined by pushover analyses conducted in two principal directions. The inelastic dynamic characteristics were represented by equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems and their seismic displacement demands were calculated under selected ground motions. Seismic performance evaluation was carried out in accordance with recently published Turkish Earthquake Code that has similarities with FEMA-356 guidelines. Reasons of building damages in past earthquakes are examined using the results of performance assessment of investigated buildings. The effects of material quality on seismic performance of school buildings were investigated. The detailed examination of capacity curves and performance evaluation identified deficiencies and possible solutions for template designs.

  • Calving records of 107 heifers from two breed groups were used to identify the major factors contributing to calving difficulty (dystocia) and compare the influence of pelvic diameters, weight and height of heifers measured after breeding and before calving on dystocia. The horizontal and vertical pelvic diameters, hip height and weight of heifers were measured two months after breeding and again two months before calving. Snell transformed calving difficulty scores (0 = normal to 100 = surgical intervention) were used in analyzing the data by analysis of covariance. Body condition score of the heifer, sire birth weight of the calf, birth weight of the calf, and ratio of calf birth weight to pelvic area all had significant effects on dystocia. Calf birth weight, ratio of calf birth weight to pelvic area, and heifer's condition score were especially important. However, sex of calf did not have a significant influence on dystocia. Generally, the variables measured before calving accounted for a higher proportion of variation in dystocia than those measured after breeding. Thus, based on the relative importance of the major factors affecting dystocia, it is suggested that selection of bulls with low birth weight for breeding on normal size heifers with optimum body condition score, and well developed pelvic opening, would be effective in reducing the incidence and severity of dystocia in beef heifers.

  • This paper has been performed in order to figure out the reason of failure in T23 weldments used for boiler tube at 550 $^{\circ}C$. Defects such as cracks and cavities occurred in CGHAZ (coarse grain heat-affected-zone) and multi pass of weld metal, and these crack propagated along grain boundary. Microstructure evolution such as grain growth and carbide precipitation was investigated by optical microscope (OM), transmission electron microscope(TEM). Moreover, Auger electron spectroscope (AES) was employed in order to examine segregation along the grain boundaries. There is significant difference in grain size and precipitation distribution in the region where cracking took place. In addition, sulfur segregation was observed. Based on the results of this investigation, it has been possible to establish that this type of cracks were consistent with reheat cracking and creep damage. Selection of optimal filler metal, heat input, and PWHT temperature is required for prevention in order to avoid this type of cracking.

  • This paper pointed out major problems of land use regulation policy surrounding Paldang Lake as follows: (1) inefficient management system, (2) inconsistent administrative management, (3) illogical selection of regulated area, (4) contradictory present system, and (5) controversial discharge control. Several regulation laws for the land-use surrounding Paldang Lake caused confusion of application and inefficiency of management. Amendment of regulation laws made it possible that the regulated area was developed, which resulted in the deterioration of water quality. In addition, successive regulations without scientific implementation overexpanded regulated area and focus on the discharge concentration of contaminated sources stimulated development of small size sources. To overcome these problems, we suggested reestablishment of regulated area, differentiation of regulation amendments, and flexibility in the application of regulation. It is necessary to arrange regulated area based on the efficient land use management and scientific implementation and then to mitigate land use regulation under the sustainable development. For the flexible application of regulation, it is required to amend the rule in response to the change of environmental condition and development of environmental techniques.

  • We developed a new generalized synthetic procedure, called as "heat-up process," to produce uniform-sized nanocrystals of many transition metals and oxides without a size selection process. We were able to synthesize uniform magnetite nanocrystals as much as 1 kilogram-scale from the thermolysis of Fe-oleate complex. Clever combination of different nanoscale materials will lead to the development of multifunctional nano-biomedical platforms for simultaneous targeted delivery, fast diagnosis, and efficient therapy. In this presentation, I would like to present some of our group's recent results on the designed fabrication of multifunctional nanostructured materials based on uniform-sized magnetite nanoparticles and their medical applications. Uniform ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles of <3 nm were synthesized by thermal decomposition of iron-oleate complex in the presence of oleyl alcohol. These ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles exhibited good T1 contrast effect. In in vivo T1 weighted blood pool magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), iron oxide nanoparticles showed longer circulation time than commercial gadolinium complex, enabling high resolution imaging. We used 80 nm-sized ferrimagnetic iron oxide nanocrystals for T2 MRI contrast agent for tracking transplanted pancreatic islet cells and single-cell MR imaging. We reported on the fabrication of monodisperse magnetite nanoparticles immobilized with uniform pore-sized mesoporous silica spheres for simultaneous MRI, fluorescence imaging, and drug delivery. We synthesized hollow magnetite nanocapsules and used them for both the MRI contrast agent and magnetic guided drug delivery vehicle.
