Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) of the generalized extreme value distribution (GEVD) is known to sometimes over-estimate the positive value of the shape parameter for the small sample size. The maximum penalized likelihood estimation (MPLE) with Beta penalty function was proposed by some researchers to overcome this problem. But the determination of the hyperparameters (HP) in Beta penalty function is still an issue. This paper presents some data adaptive methods to select the HP of Beta penalty function in the MPLE framework. The idea is to let the data tell us what HP to use. For given data, the optimal HP is obtained from the minimum distance between the MLE and MPLE. A bootstrap-based method is also proposed. These methods are compared with existing approaches. The performance evaluation experiments for GEVD by Monte Carlo simulation show that the proposed methods work well for bias and mean squared error. The methods are applied to Blackstone river data and Korean heavy rainfall data to show better performance over MLE, the method of L-moments estimator, and existing MPLEs.
Purpose: A large number of attributes with mixed levels are often considered in the conjoint analysis. In the cases where attributes have two or three levels, we research on the efficient design of survey questionnaire to estimate all the main effect and two factor interaction effects with a reasonable size of it. Methods: To reduce the number of questions in a questionnaire, the balanced incomplete block mixed level factorial design with minimum aberration was proposed by Lim and Chung (2016). Based on the number of questions and that of the respondents in that design, D-optimality criterion is adopted to find efficient designs where the main effect and two factor interaction effects are estimated. Results: The list of the number of questions and that of the respondents in efficient designs for survey questionnaire are recommended based on the D-efficiency of each design and the proposed selection criteria for the number of both questions and the respondents. By analyzing all the respondents survey data generated by the simulation study, we find the proper model. Conclusion: The proposed methods of designing survey questionnaires seem to perform well in the sense that how often the proper model is found in a simulation study where all the respondents survey data are generated by the simulation model.
The propensity score matching method is a statistical method used to reduce selection bias in observational studies and to show effects similar to random allocation. There are many observational studies in dentistry research, and differences in baseline covariates between the control and case groups affect the outcome. In order to reduce the bias due to confounding variables, the propensity scores are used by equating groups based on the baseline covariates. This method is effective, especially when there are many covariates or the sample size is small. In this paper, the propensity score matching method was explained in a simple way with a dental example by using R software. This simulated data were obtained from one of retrospective study. The control group and the case group were matched according to the propensity score and compared before and after treatment. The propensity score matching method could be an alternative to compensate for the disadvantage of the observation study by reducing the bias based on the covariates with the propensity score.
The construction of a new cavern modifies the state of stresses and displacements in a zone around the existing cavern. For multiple caverns, the size of this influence zone depends on the ground type, the in situ stress, the cavern span and shape, the width of the pillar separating the caverns, and the excavation sequence. Performances of underground twin caverns can be unsatisfactory as a result of either instability (collapse) or excessive displacements. These two distinct failures should be prevented in design. This study simulated the ultimate and serviceability performances of underground twin rock caverns of various sizes and shapes. The global factor of safety is used as the criterion for determining the ultimate limit state and the calculated maximum displacement around the cavern opening is adopted as the serviceability limit state criterion. Based on the results of a series of numerical simulations, simple regression models were developed for estimating the global factor of safety and the maximum displacement, respectively. It was proposed that a proper pillar width can be determined based on the threshold influence factor value. In addition, design charts with regard to the selection of the pillar width for underground twin rock caverns under similar ground conditions were also developed.
We have constructed an AFLP-based linkage map of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora Siebold et Zucc.) using haploid DNA samples of 96 megagametophytes from a single maternal tree, selection clone Kyungbuk 4. Twenty-eight primer pairs generated a total of 5,780 AFLP fragments. Five hundreds and thirteen fragments were verified as genetic markers with two alleles by their Mendelian segregation. At the linkage criteria LOD 4.0 and maximum recombination fraction 0.25(${\theta}$), a total of 152 markers constituted 25 framework maps for 19 major linkage groups. The maps spanned a total length of 2,341 cM with an average framework marker spacing of 18.4 cM. The estimated genome size was 2,662 cM. With an assumption of equal marker density, 82.2% of the estimated genome would be within 10 cM of one of the 230 linked markers, and 68.1% would be within 10 cM of one of the 152 framework markers. We evaluated map completeness in terms of LOD value, marker density, genome length, and map coverage. The resulting map will provide crucial information for future genomic studies of the Japanese red pine, in particular for QTL mapping of economically important breeding target traits.

A new fingerprint image enhancement algorithm using multiresolution information and Gabor filter is proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm performs selection of the region in image according to inclusion of singular points and then performs enhancement using Gabor filtering of the region adjusted in its size. Gabor filter using representative direction in the same block is used in the region that the direction of ridge is not changed much, while Gabor filter using pixel based direction is used in the region that the direction of ridge is changed much. This method can reduce processing time for enhancement using Gabor filter and preserve the merit of Gabor filter.

There are several lasers available for office-based or suspension microlaryngoscopy laser procedures in the treatment of laryngeal diseases. Each has advantages and disadvantages given the depth of penetration per unit of power, absorption in water, spectral absorption characteristics, mode of delivery, safety, and cost. It is important to note that while the proper selection of indication of treatment based on a laser wavelength is critical, of equal importance is selecting the appropriate power setting, focal length (or spot size), and time of exposure. The photoangiolytic lasers precisely target hemoglobin within the microcirculation of the highly vascularized tissue and may have better hemostatic effects and preservation of surrounding normal tissue than the CO2 laser. Although the choice of laser is purely theoretical and cannot be accurately concluded which parameters of laser (wattage and pulse width) were best to use, photoangiolytic laser surgery is safe and effective for specific laryngeal lesions. In this review, indications for photoangiolytic laser procedures for various laryngeal diseases, laser settings and surgical techniques for specific laryngeal lesions including sulcus vocalis, laryngeal dysplasia, and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis will be introduced. Pros and cons of in-office laser surgery using photoangiolytic laser and flexible CO2 laser will also be addressed.

Optimal fleet management in the planning stage is one of the most critical activities that guarantee successful construction projects. In South Korea, the construction standard production rate database (CSPRD) is normally employed. However, when it comes to a trade-off problem that involves decision-making on optimal sets of equipment to perform a certain task, the method will require the planners' in-depth knowledge and experience regarding the target process and a time consuming estimation of the performance of every possible scenario must be conducted for the deduction of the optimal fleet management. On this account, this research paper proposes a lightweight method of using mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) in multi-objective problems based on CSPRD-based mathematical equations to assist planners in the preplanning stage of choosing the optimal sets of types and size machinery to efficiently arrange the construction scheduling and budgeting.
Sensor nodes are the most significant part of a wireless sensor network that offers a powerful combination of sensing, processing, and communication. One major challenge while designing a sensor node is power consumption, as sensor nodes are generally battery-operated. In this study, we proposed the design of a low-power, long range-based wireless sensor node with flexibility, a compact size, and energy efficiency. Furthermore, we improved power performance by adopting an efficient hardware design and proper component selection. The Nano Power Timer Integrated Circuit is used for power management, as it consumes nanoamps of current, resulting in improved battery life. The proposed design achieves an off-time current of 38.17309 nA, which is tiny compared with the design discussed in the existing literature. Battery life is estimated for spreading factors (SFs), ranging from SF7 to SF12. The achieved battery life is 2.54 years for SF12 and 3.94 years for SF7. We present the analysis of current consumption and battery life. Sensor data, received signal strength indicator, and signal-to-noise ratio are visualized using the ThingSpeak network.

This paper proposes a block-based self-organizing time-division multiple access (BSO-TDMA) protocol for very high frequency (VHF) data exchange system (VDES) in shipborne ad-hoc networks (SANETs). The BSO-TDMA reduces the collisions caused by the simultaneous transmission of automatic identification system (AIS) messages by uniformly allocating channel resources using a block-wise frame. For this purpose, the BSO-TDMA includes two functional operations: (1) frame configuration and (2) slot allocation. The first operation consists of block division and block selection. A frame is divided into multiple blocks, each consisting of fixed-size subblocks, by using the reporting interval (RI) of the ship. Then, the ship selects one of the subblocks within a block by considering the number of occupied slots for each subblock. The second operation allocates the slots within the selected subblock for transmitting AIS messages. First, one of the unoccupied slots within the selected subblock is allocated for the periodic transmission of position reports. Next, to transmit various types of AIS messages, an unoccupied slot is randomly selected from candidate slots located around the previously allocated slot. Experimental simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of BSO-TDMA. The results show that BSO-TDMA has better performance than that of the existing SOTDMA.
