  • Chip size distribution can be used to evaluate the cutting efficiency and to characterize the cutting behavior of rock during cutting and fragmentation process. In this study, a series of linear cutting tests was performed to investigate the effect of cutting conditions (specifically cut spacing and penetration depth) on the production and size distribution of rock chips. Linyi sandstone from China was used in the linear cutting tests. After each run of linear cutting machine test, the rock chips were collected and their size distribution was analyzed using a sieving test and image processing. Image processing can rapidly and cost-effectively provide useful information of size distribution. Rosin-Rammer distribution pamameters, the coarseness index and the coefficients of uniformity and curvature were determined by image processing for different cutting conditions. The size of the rock chips was greatest at the optimum cut spacing, and the size distribution parameters were highly correlated with cutter forces and specific energy.

  • The size effect on axial compressive strength in notched concrete specimens was experimentally investigated. Based on the concept of the fracture mechanics and size effect law, theoretical studies for axial compressive failure of concrete were reviewed, and two failure modes of concrete specimens under compression were discussed. In this study, experiments of axial compressive failure, which is one of the two failure modes, was carried out by using cylindrical specimens. Adequate notch length was taken from the experimental result of strength variation based on the notch length. And, by taking various sizes of specimens the size effect on axial compressive strength of concrete was investigated. Also, model equations were suggested by modified size effect law (MSEL). The test results show that size effect appears conspicuously for all series of specimens. Additionally, the effect of initial notch length on axial compressive strength was also apparent.

  • Microforming is a very efficient and economical technology to fabricate very small metallic parts in various applications. In order to extend the use of this forming technology for the production of microparts, the size effect, which occurs with the reduction of part size and affects the forming process significantly, must be thoroughly investigated. In this study, the tribological size effect in microforming was studied using modeling and scaled ring compression experiments. A micro-scale friction approach based on the slip-line field theory and lubricant pocket model was used to understand the friction mechanism and explain the tribological size effect. Ring compression tests were performed to analyze the interfacial friction condition from the deformation characteristics of the ring specimens. In addition, finite element analysis results were utilized to quantitatively determine the size-dependent frictional behavior of materials in various process conditions. By comparing theoretical results and experimental measurements for different size factors, the accuracy and reliability of the model were verified.

  • We measure the degree of polarization of the lunar regolith to map the distributions of the age and the particle size. We use a 12cm refracting telescope with a 2k-square pixel color CCD (R band) and a polarization filter. The angular resolution obtained is 3.02 km/pixel. Our goal is to obtain a map of the lunar particle size distribution on the lunar regolith and then that of the age distribution. Polarization of the light scattered by lunar surface contains information on their mean particle size. The mean particle size of the lunar surface has been decreased by continued micro-meteoroid impact over a long period. One can estimate the age of the lunar surface if the mean particle size is known. Particle sizes can be measured through observations of polarization because the mean particle size is related to the maximum polarization and albedo. The age and the particle size of the lunar regolith can give vital information for the future lunar exploration.

  • The characteristics of the internal circuits and the load capacitance should be included to optimize the size of BiCMOS buffer. In order to get the optimum size and delay time of the BiCMOS buffer, new size plane is suggested. By using the size plane, the optimum characteristics of CMOS buffer according to the number of stages can be obtained. From this method, delaytime, .tau.$_{D}$, is obtained 2.39 nsec with $V_{\var}$=5V, $C_{L}$=5pF, W=30.mu.m and $A_{e}$=135.mu. $m^{2}$.>..>...>.

  • The production process of a fine size fraction of Korean kaolin by ball milling is studied in this paper by analyzing the size distribution the size distribution of products with the Rosin-rammle formular and the rate process of cumulative size fractions with Alyavdin-Chujyo's formular. The size distribution is found to be divided in three regions a coarser part influenced by feed size an intermediate part where the size distribution shows a clear straight line relationship on Rosin-Rammler chart and the finest part with the ultimate limit of fineness by ball milling. Alyavdin-Chujyo's relationship is found to be valid over a very wide range of milling conditions. For different feed sizes the Alyavdin-Chujyo's relationship gives a group of straight lines with a common intersection point which can be defined as the limiting point of the persistent component region.

  • Recently, the use of C.S.G is gradually increasing as the construction material for dam, road, revetment and so on. The strength characteristics of C.S.G is affected by various influence factors such as specimen size, maximum grain size and water contents. Therefore, When designing and constructing the C.S.G structure, it is very important for us to understand the nature of used materials well and to test it's quality. Commonly, C.S.G strength test is used the cylinders specimen size of $15{\times}30$ at KS F2405. But, the specimen size extracted from the field structure is not regular. This paper aims at offering the experimental data about the compressive strength and elasticity modulus by change of the specimen size for the effective quality control of the C.S.G structure.

  • In this study of age differences in the correct judgment of relative size and size comparison strategies, 114 three-, four-, and five-year-old children were asked to judge the relative size of 2 figures. Findings were that older children judged size comparison more correctly than younger children. The 5-year-old children used the strategy of superimposition more frequently than younger children, though children in all age groups most frequently used the strategy of one sided comparison with one side of each figure touching the other. The strategy in which one figure is put on top another with a general shape adjustment led most frequently to correct judgment of the relative size of 2 figures.

  • Numerous tests on concrete structure members under local pressure demonstrated that the compressive strength of concrete at the loaded surface is increased by the confinement effect provided by the enveloping concrete. Even though most design codes propose specific criteria for preventing bearing failure, they do not take into consideration size effect which is an important phenomenon in the fracture mechanics of concrete/reinforced concrete. In this paper, six series of square prism concrete blocks with three different depths (size range = 1:4) and two different height/depth ratios of 2 and 3 are tested under concentrated load. Ultimate loads obtained from the test results are analysed by means of the modified size effect law (MSEL). Then, a prediction formula, which considers effect of both depth and height on size effect, is proposed. The developed formula is compared with experimental data existing in the literature. It is concluded that the observed size effect is in good agreement with the MSEL.

  • In the citrate reduction method of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) synthesis, pH of the reaction mixture can have a considerable impact on the size and size distribution of AuNPs. In this work, effects of pH variation upon the size and its distribution were examined systematically. As the initial pH was change from 5.5 to 10.5, it showed an optimal pH around 7.5. At this pH, both of the size and the size distribution showed their minimum values, which was verified by transmission electron microscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy. This occurrence of optimal pH was discussed with the results of in situ monitoring pH during the reaction of AuNP synthesis.
