  • Trained singers, one group of professional voice users, have much more interest on the voice than common people, and on its management, too. They train for singing beautiful songs, and, at the same time, try for efficient voice production. The present study was performed with three tenors and three baritones, undergraduate students majored in classical singing, to investigate the degree of improvement of their voice production efficiency through vocal function exercise, by measuring the three dependent variables, maximum phonation time, speed quotient of glottal contact, and the number of semi tones. For the baseline establishment, dependent variables were measured 3$\sim$6 times for two weeks. Then, the subjects exercised vocal function exercise for seven weeks, and after the termination of training, evaluation was performed four times for two weeks, to find the maintenance of the training effect. Vocal function exercise is composed of four successive steps: warm-up, stretching exercise, contracting exercise, power exercise. As results, all of six subjects showed improvement in the aspect of maximum phonation time, speed quotient if glottal contact, and the number of semitones.

  • The hydration at $23^{\circ}C$ between $Ca(OH)_2$ and siliceous materials with various compositions of silica gel and quartz were studied in paste state, and also diatomite was empolyed as another form of silica. The effect of the structural state of silica on the pozzolanic reactivity was investigated by X-ray, DTA, electron microscopy, and chemical analysis. The results obtained were as follows. (1) The molar ratio of $Ca(OH)_2$ to silica gel(C/Sg) being changed in 0.49, 0.81 and 1.22, the free $Ca(OH)_2$ was disappeared within six hours, three days and two weeks respectively and ill-crystallized CSH(I) was formed. However, in the case fo molar ratio of C/Sg=2.45, almost lime was remained uncombinedly after twenty four weeks yet. (2) Though the molar ratio C/Sg of diatomite was 0.71, the hydration was stabilized at three weeks and the result exhibited very peculiar characteristics from silica gel. (3) Pozzolanic reactivity of quartz was negligible, but $\alpha$-cristobalite in diatomite showed appreciable reactivity. (4) The thermal curves showed the exothermic peaks in the range 830 to $930^{\circ}C$ and lower broad peaks at high temperature in the initial steps of hydration, transfered to lower temperature with sharp peaks by proceeding of hydration. (5) The samples containing more silica gel exhibited higher pozzolanic reactivity and martar strength, but the diatomite gave remarkable result for them and they were matched to the strength development rate.

  • Elsinoe fawcettii and E. australis are two currently recognized scab pathogens of citrus. E. fawcettii has at least six pathotypes while E. australis has at least two pathotypes. Colonies of E. fawcettii and E. australis do not sporulate in artificial media including potato dextrose agar (PDA). Whiteside's method has been widely used for preparing conidial inoculum in vitro. This study was carried out to develop efficient method for conidia production from artificial media. We developed a shaking method which included the following steps: 1) Colony grown on PDA was mashed with a steel spatula; 2) Mycelia fragments were cultured in 50 ml sterilized rain water in a rotary shaker-incubator (180 rpm) at $25^{\circ}C$ for 24 h: 3) The conidia suspension was filtered through two layers of cheesecloth. Average conidia production of all isolates tested using this shaking method was approximately 13.1 times higher than that from Whiteside's method in this study.

  • The effects of risering design and alloying element on the formation of defects such as external depression, primary and secondary shrinkage cavities in ductile cast iron were investigated. Two types of risering design for the cylindrically step-wise specimen, No. 1(progressive solidification) and No. 2(directional solidification) risering designs, were prepared and six different alloy compositions were casted. In the No. 1 risering design, external depression or primary shrinkage cavities due to liquid contraction were observed in all the specimens from SG 10 to SG 60. The defects caused by liquid contraction seemed to be more affected by risering design than alloying elements. The secondary shrinkage cavities were also observed in all the specimens but a swollen surface was not observed in all the castings. The primary shrinkage cavities were located right under the top surface or connected to the top surface, and were characterized by smooth surfaces. On the other hand, the secondary shrinkage cavities were positioned in the thermal center of the specimen steps 3 and 4, and characterized by rough surfaces. In the No. 2 risering design, no external depression or primary shrinkage cavities due to liquid contraction were observed in all the specimens from SG 10 to SG 60. However, the secondary shrinkage cavities were formed in the thermal center of specimens SG 40, 50 and 60. Like the No. 1 risering design, a swollen surface was not observed in all the castings.
