  • PURPOSES : This study aimed to analyze economic effect of recycled aggregate production on job-site airport pavement. METHODS : The validation of site recycling for waste concrete as economic efficiency is analyzed through the case study of site recycling at an O airport pavement construction. The break-even point for the cost of site recycling was estimated according to two different waste concrete processing methods such as job-site recycling and processing on commission (or plant). RESULTS : Job-site recycling cost decreases as the use rate of job-site recycled concrete aggregate increases, or the amount of concrete waste increases, but transporting distance decreases. It was shown in an O airport case that as the use rate of job-site recycled concrete aggregate exceeds 61.4 %, the job-site recycling cost is cheaper than the processing cost on commission. CONCLUSIONS : The results of this study can utilize basic data of feasibility for site recycling of waste concrete on airport pavement construction.

  • Recently, it has been important issue to recycle the rapid increase of construction waste. The site-recycling of construction waste has been one of alternatives to recycle construction waste. The economic superiority of site-recycling was shown in previous studies, but it is hardly studied in the Quantification of social costs from site-recycling. This study identified the generation of the carbon dioxide from the site-recycling and Quantified the social costs of it. Also, this study performed the comparison and analysis of the social costs of the carbon dioxide in accordance with the aggregate production from the site-recycling, processing on commission, and a stony mountain. The results of this study indicated that the site-recycling was the most effective in the social costs.

  • Recently, the construction wastes increase rapidly due to the revitalization of reconstruction and redevelopment, the development of new urbanization of large housing development, the expansion of social infrastructure, and so on. To solve rapid increase of construction waste, the government established "the rule on the promotion of recycling of construction waste" in December, 2003. According to the rule, construction wastes can be recycled by either processing on commission or discharger of construction waste. This study proved the validation of site recycling for construction waste as economic efficiency is analyzed through the case study of site recycling at large housing development district. Using the sensitivity analysis, factors affecting the cost of site recycling was analyzed and the break-even point for the cost of site recycling was estimated according to the factors.

  • This study evaluated the recycling potential of in-site waste soil as pile back filling material (PBFM). We performed experiments to check workability, segregation resistance, bond strength, direct shear stress test, and dynamic load test using in-site waste soil in coastal areas. We found that PBFM showed better performance than general cement paste in terms of workability, segregation resistance, and bond strength. On the other hand, the structural performance of PBFM was slightly lower than that of general cement paste due to the skin friction force of pile by Pile Driving Analyzer and direct shear stress. However, because this type of performance degradation in terms of structure can be improved through the use of piles with larger diameter or by changing the type of pile, considering the economics and environment, we considered that recycling of PBFM has sufficient value.

  • The construction wastes rapidly increase because of redevelopment, the development of new urbanization of large-scale land development, the expansion of social infrastructure. As one of the ways to recycle construction waste to be recycled directly. This case, recycling of materials uses up most of recycled aggregate can be secured reliably. As a result, a decrease in the amount of materials brought in or taken out of the site, the cost of transportation, carbon dioxide emission, and traffic can be reduced. Economic, social and environmental effects can be expected. Therefore, this study of the construction waste "Site-Recycling" to enable the construction waste from the occurrence of "site-recycling" that can be processed in batches to apply the "Site-Recycling Simulation Program" is to develop the algorithms.

  • Currently, portable equipment for recycling of waste asphalt concrete (ASCON) has been used. However, any air pollution control devices are not attached in the simple portable one. Thus, a lot of air pollutants have been produced from recycling processes of waste ASCON which resulted from aging of paved roads or repavement of roads. This study deals with a preliminary result of concentration analysis of air pollutants obtained from a pilot and a real recycling processes of waste ASCON using simple portable recycling equipment. Air pollutants were taken from 4 steps of the pilot recycling process including an initial heating by liquid petroleum gas (LPG), intermediate heating and melting (H&M) process, final H&M process, and pavement processes using recycled ASCON at the recycling site. Also, air pollutants were taken front 4 steps of the real recycling processes including an initial H&M, final H&M and mixing, loading of recycled ASCON to dump trucks, and at the recycling site after leaving the loaded dump trucks for real pavement sites. The air pollutants measured in this study include volatile organic compounds (VOCs), aldehydes, particulate matter (PM: PM1, PM2.5, PM7, PM10, TSP (total suspended particulate)). The identified concentrations of VOCs increased with increasing time or degree for H&M of waste ASCON. In particular, very high concentrations of the VOCs at the status of complete melting, which is exposed to the air, of the waste ASCON just before paving tv the recycled ASCON at the recycling site. Also, considerable amount of VOCs were identified from the recycling equipment after the dump trucks leaded by recycled ASCON leaved the recycling site for the pavement sites. The relative level of formaldehyde exceeded 80% of the aldehydes Identified in the recycling processes. This is because the waste ASCON is exposed to direct flame of LPG during H&M processes. The PM concentrations measured in the winter recycling processes, such as the loading and rotation processes of waste ASCON into/in the recycling equipment for H&M, were much higher than those in the summer ones. In particular, the concentrations of coarse particles such as PM7 and PM10 during the winter recycling were very high as compared those during the summer one.

However, most of construction waste can be recycled by processing on commission. One of the most reason is that it is difficult for proving economic effect of site recycling by discharger. This study investigated and analyzed in a generation and disposal process, status of recycling, and procedure and process of site recycling of construction waste. Also, this study proved the validation of site recycling for construction waste as economic efficiency is analyzed through the case study of site recycling at large housing development district. The results of this study can utilize the establishment of policy and basic data of feasibility for site recycling of construction waste.

  • Today's human life is more conveniently advantaged and abundant as industrial society advanced. However, the development has been creating a serious environmental crisis. Environmental pollution and exhaustion of natural resources recently became an important issue in construction industry as well as the concern about construction waste management and recycling the resources has arisen. Because the industrial wastes are not only increased quantitatively but also qualitatively intricate and various, groping for ways of reducing the use of resources primarily and recycling is urged on promotion. Currently, only about 33% of the wood wastes produced in construction site are recycled and the others are incinerated or disposed through irregular circulation process. In this study, I will investigate the present status of generating, processing, and recycling construction wood wastes and compare domestic disposal trend to other countries. In addition, I will analyze the actual condition of processing wood wastes in the construction site, verify the irrational causes, and simplify anomalous factors for the purpose of more efficient and correct activation of wood waste treatment and recycling on construction field and protection of environment in the long run.
