  • The area of facility horticulture in Korea is increasing rapidly, the single-span pipe house which uses galvanized steel pipe as the main rafters occupies 78.7% of the facility area. Lightweight structures such as the single-span pipe house are vulnerable to meteorological disasters such as strong winds, economic losses of the state, local governments and farmers are continuing as construction does not meet the design standards. In order to minimize economic losses in the horticultural specialty facilities sector, the Rural Development Administration has been operating the horticultural disaster resilient standard for horticultural specialty facilities since April 2007. The only standard for the pipe connector is the disaster resilient standard, there is no standard for the uplift capacity of the house pipe foundation and the research on it is also insufficient. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of uplift capacity according to the foundation type, compaction ratio and embedded depth through soil box test. The results of the maximum uplift capacity according to the type, compaction ratio and embedded depth can be used as the basic data for the basic design of the pipe house conforming to the disaster resilient standard. Due to the limitation of soil box test, it may be different from the behavior of pipe house installed on site. In the future, the field test and the actual pipe house should be made and supplemented by comparing this result with the field test values.

  • It's essential to build an earth retaining structure at the beginning and end point of a tunnel constructed in a colluvium area. A large scale of colluvial soil may cause a problem to the stability of the excavation ground. An excavation in colluvium has different behavior characteristics from those in a sandy soil due to unstable elements and needs counter measures for it. There are few systematic research efforts on the behavior characteristics of an earth retaining structure installed in colluvial soil. Thus this study set out to collect measuring data from an excavation site at the tunnel pit mouth in colluvium and set quantitative criteria for the safety of an earth retaining structure. After comparing and analyzing the theoretical and empirical earth pressure from the measuring data, the lateral earth pressure distribution acted on the earth retaining wall was suggested.

  • With increasing demand for nuclear power generation, nuclear structures are being planned and constructed worldwide. A grave safety concern is that these structures are sensitive to large-magnitude shaking, e.g., during earthquakes. Seismic response analysis, which requires P- and S-wave velocities, is a key element in nuclear structure design. Accordingly, it is important to determine the P- and S-wave velocities in the Gyeongju and Pohang regions of South Korea, which are home to nuclear power plants and have a history of seismic activity. P- and S-wave velocities can be obtained indirectly through a correlation with physical properties (e.g., N values, Young's modulus, and uniaxial compressive strength), and researchers worldwide have proposed regression equations. However, the Gyeongju and Pohang regions of Korea have not been considered in previous studies. Therefore, a database was constructed for these regions. The database includes physical properties such as N values and P- and S-wave velocities of the soil layer, as well as the uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, and P- and S-wave velocities of the bedrock layer. Using the constructed database, the geological characteristics and distribution of physical properties of the study region were analyzed. Furthermore, models for predicting P- and S-wave velocities were developed for soil and bedrock layers in the Gyeongju and Pohang regions. In particular, the model for predicting the S-wave velocity for the soil layers was compared with models from previous studies, and the results indicated its effectiveness in predicting the S-wave velocity for the soil layers in the Gyeongju and Pohang regions using the N values. The proposed models for predicting P- and S-wave velocities will contribute to predicting the damage caused by earthquakes.

  • The study on mechanical behavior of the structure at the site includes experimental method and numerical analysis method. Experimental method is categorized into true-scale test and laboratory model test. A laboratory model test is to monitor the failure mechanism with a model simulated similar with a real ground so as to identify the quantitative result, while a true-scale model test is the approach which enables to identify the potential problems that may occur with a simulated construction situation similar with a real site circumstance. Thus this study was intended to carry out the experimental test of non open-cut excavation by pipe roof method which is mostly common in domestic sites. as well as was aimed at identifying the ground behavior occurred during pipe penetration using laboratory model test. Appropriate reduced-scale model was selected, taking into account of domestic geological characteristics and operation characteristics of traditional and high-speed rail trains and the qualitative evaluation of displacement was carried out based on a certain ground loss volume depending on excavation after categorizing trackbed settlement pattern by depth of top soil.

  • In Korea, length of irrigation and drain canal is about 98,638 km. In the case of 2011, dredging on the irrigation and drain canal was 7,288 km about 3,290,483 $m^3$, cost of dredging was about 5.6 billion won and cost of dredging increases every year. (Korea Rural Community Corporation, 2013). In the case of land reclamation, the problem of cross-contamination due to leachate after landfill is expected, causing saturation of the landfill site, or complaints of landfill local residents, a number of problems. The ocean landfill is possible if the items of 14 types as defined in the Sea Pollution Prevention Law contained in sediment soil, such as chromium. In terms of cost and labor, it is need to develop a technology utilizing a processing method reasonable sediments for irrigation and drainage canal. The objective of this study was to analyze the characteristics of the sediment deposited on the irrigation and drain canal. it is to provide basic data for the scheme that can be efficiently recycled sediment deposited on the irrigation and drain canal.

  • Cicuta virosa is an endangered species in Korea, which is a southern marginal area. To conserve and restore habitats of this plant, we investigated water and soil environmental characteristics and vegetation at four habitats during the growing season. The C. virosa habitats differed in community structure, water and substrate properties, and water regime. Although the total distribution ranges of the water and soil environments for C. virosa were wide and overlapped with the optimal environmental range of distribution of accompanying species, the optimal water level range for C. virosa was defined as $7{\pm}3.5$ cm. Water level was adjusted by substrate structure such as a mound of P. japonica and a floating mat comprised of accompanying species. A floating mat was an aid to maintain an optimal and stable water level in deep or fluctuating water and to prevent strong competition with prolific macrophytes. The GS sampling site, which had floating mats, could be a good model for C. virosa conservation in a warm temperate region, whereas the PC sampling sites, which experienced a water shortage in spring, provided a clue about the decline in C. virosa population size.

  • In this study, the effect of relative density and fine contents(Finer then # 0.08mm sieve) on liquefaction phenomenon in reclaimed land by hydraulic hammer compaction is analyzed. For more site-specific studies, reclaimed land in Inchon International Airport is selected and the cyclic triaxial tests are performed on disturbed samples. In cyclic triaxial tests, the characteristics of reclaimed land in Inchon International Airport are considered sufficiently. The liquefaction resistance stress ratio ($\tau$$\ell$/$\sigma$v') can be defined by relative density 40, 50, 60, and 70% and also by fine contents : 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% under relative density (D$\_$r/) 50% used disturbed samples. From tile result of comparing tile cyclic triaxial tests, it is shown that the liquefaction strength of soil increases with increases of relative density and fine contents. Fspecially fine contents is the main factor affecting the liquefaction potential. In addition, the liquefaction resistance stress ratio is reduced by the increase of fine content and tile ratio of change is steep until fine contents 20% and that is flexible during the range of fine contents 20% to 40%. Through this study, it is proved that the soil characteristics (fine contents 5∼20%) of the reclaimed land in Inchon International Airport flays an important role in the reduction of liquefaction potential.

  • This study aims to prepare a technical protocol for identifying the source of nitrate in water using nitrogen (δ15N) and oxygen (δ18O) stable isotope ratios. The technical processes for nitrate sources identification are composed of site investigation, sample collection and analysis, isotope analysis, source identification using isotope characteristics, and source apportionment for multiple potential sources with the Bayesian isotope mixing model. Characteristics of various nitrate potential sources are reviewed, and their typical ranges of δ15N and δ18O are comparatively analyzed and summarized. This study also summarizes the current knowledge on the dual-isotope approach and how to correlate the field-relevant information such as land use and hydrochemical data to the nitrate source identification.
