  • Conductive SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were produced by subjection a 40:60(vol%) mixture of zirconium diborided ($ZrB_2$) powder and ${\beta}$-silicon carbide (SiC) matrix to spark plasma sintering (SPS) under argon atmosphere. Inner diameters of graphite mold were $15mm{\varphi}$ and $20mm{\varphi}$, respectively. The relative densities of $15mm{\varphi}$ and $20mm{\varphi}$ sample were 99.4% and 97.88%, respectively. Reactions between ${\beta}$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ were not observed via x-ray diffraction (hereafter, XRD) analysis. The result of FE-SEM of fracture face of $15mm{\varphi}$ sample was intergranular fracture and that of $20mm{\varphi}$ sample was transgranular fracture. Because the fracture strength of $15mm{\varphi}$ sample was much higher than that of $20mm{\varphi}$ sample. The electrical resistivity, $9.37{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ of $15mm{\varphi}$ sample was higher than that, $6.17{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ of $20mm{\varphi}$ sample because of densification. Although sintering condition of SPS is same. the properties of sintered SiC-$ZrB_2$ compacts were changed according to inner diameter of graphite mold.

  • The present study demonstrates the effect of freezing conditions on the pore structure of porous Cu-10 wt.% Sn prepared by freeze drying of $CuO-SnO_2$/camphene slurry. Mixtures of CuO and $SnO_2$ powders are prepared by ball milling for 10 h. Camphene slurries with 10 vol.% of $CuO-SnO_2$ are unidirectionally frozen in a mold maintained at a temperature of $-30^{\circ}C$ for 1 and 24 h, respectively. Pores are generated by the sublimation of camphene at room temperature. After hydrogen reduction and sintering at $650^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, the green body of the $CuO-SnO_2$ is completely converted into porous Cu-Sn alloy. Microstructural observation reveals that the sintered samples have large pores which are aligned parallel to the camphene growth direction. The size of the large pores increases from 150 to $300{\mu}m$ with an increase in the holding time. Also, the internal walls of the large pores contain relatively small pores whose size increases with the holding time. The change in pore structure is explained by the growth behavior of the camphene crystals and rearrangement of the solid particles during the freezing process.

  • The Co-Cr as-cast alloys are widely used in the manufacturing of orthopedic implants made with investment casting techniques because of its high strength, good corrosion resistance and excellent biocompatibility properties. Carbide precipitation at grain boundaries and interdendritic regions is the major strenthening mechanism in the as-cast condition. In this study, effects of GPS (Gas Pressured Sintering) heat-treatment on the microstructure and crystallinity of the as-cast Co-Cr alloy prepared by investment casting were investigated. It was confirmed that the content of metal carbide ($Cr_{23}C_6$) was increased in the grain boundary by using optical microscopy (OM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).

  • An aim of the study is to develop an efficient numerical simulation technique that can handle the two-scale analysis of fluid permeation filters fabricated by the partial sintering technique of small spherical ceramics. A solid-fluid mixture homogenization method is introduced to predict the mechanical characters such as rigidity and permeability of the porous ceramic filters from the micro-scale geometry and configuration of partially-sintered particles. An extended finite element (X-FE) discretization technique based on the enriched interpolations of respective characteristic functions at fluid-solid interfaces is proposed for the non-interface-fitted mesh solution of the micro-scale analysis that needs non-slip condition at the interface between solid and fluid phases of the unit cell. The homogenization and localization performances of the proposed method are shown in a typical two-dimensional benchmark problem whose model has a hole in center. Three-dimensional applications to the body-centered cubic (BCC) and face-centered cubic (FCC) unit cell models are also shown in the paper. The 3D application is prepared toward the computer-aided optimal design of ceramic filters. The accuracy and stability of the X-FEM based method are comparable to those of the standard interface-fitted FEM, and are superior to those of the voxel type FEM that is often used in such complex micro geometry cases.

  • In this study, nanostructured Fe-Ce powder with grain size of 10nm was produced by MA (mechanical alloying) process and was consolidated by PECS (pulse electric current sintering) process for the fabrication of bulk nanostructured Fe-Co softmagnetic alloy. PECS process was performed at 700, 800, 900 and $^1000{\circ}C$ with holding time ranging from 0 to 15min. The effectiveness of PECS Process to Produce nanostructured bulk specimens was estimated. The optimal PECS process condition for nanostructured Fe-Co powders was found through observing the change of relative density and microstructure with sintering temperature and holding time. The magnetic properties of the sintered specimens were evaluated through the measurement of coercivity and saturation magnetization.

  • An experimental study for manufacturing lightweight aggregates from sewage sludge ash of sewage treatment facilities was carned out in senses of sludge disposal and utilization. In case of SA alone, aggregates with S.G. 1.67 was obtained at sintering temperature of $1250^{\circ}C$, and heating rate affects little to volume expansion rate and volume expansion rate was decreased more or less by heating time. In case of adding 10 wt% of RFCC to SA, lightweight aggregates with S.G. 1.07 was obtained and volume expansion rate was increased by heating time. The optimum adding amounts of RFCC to manufacture lightweight aggregates was 10wt% and the condition that shows maximum volume expansion rate was $20^{\circ}C/min$ of heating rate, $1250^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature and 50 mmutes of heating time. According to adding amounts of RFCC, Compressive strength of sample results in 30 wt% RFCC>SA>20 wt% RFCC>10 wt% RFCC.

  • The loss of activity by coke is an important cause of catalyst deactivation during industrial operation. In this study, hydrogen ratio of reaction condition, which has influenced on coke formation over Pt-Sn catalyst, and regeneration of catalysts activity by coke burning, Pt sintering of coke burning as coke contents, effects of coke formation and deactivation with different Sn contents were confirmed. Pt-Sn-K catalyst supported on θ-alumina and γ-alumina was prepared progressively. Activity of regenerated catalyst for propane dehydrogenation was compared with fresh catalyst by coke burning, after propane dehydrogenation was carried out with different hydrogen ratio at 620 ℃ on fresh catalyst. Regenerated catalyst’s physical characterization such as BET, coke analysis and XRD was investigated. Through catalytic activity test and characterization, Sn contents of catalyst and hydrogen ratio in feed stream could affect coke formation on catalyst surface. Excessive coke makes loss of activity and Pt sintering during air regeneration process.
