Sintering Effect on Clamping Characteristics and Pulse Aging Behavior of ESD-Sensitive V2O5/Mn3O4/Nb2O5 Codoped Zinc Oxide Varistors

  • V2O5/Mn3O4/Nb2O5 codoped zinc oxide varistor ceramics were sintered at a temperature range as low as 875~950℃. The voltage clamping characteristics of V2O5/Mn3O4/Nb2O5 codoped zinc oxide varistor ceramics were investigated at a pulse current range of 1~50 A. The sintering temperature had a significant effect on clamp voltage ratio, which exhibits surge protection capabilities. The varistor ceramics sintered at 875℃ exhibited the best clamping characteristics, in which the clamp voltage ratio was 2.69 at a pulse current of 50 A. The varistor ceramics sintered at 900℃ exhibited the highest electrical stability, where = 3,824 V/cm (initial 3,909 V/cm), and E1 mA/cm2 = 27 (initial 39) after application of a pulse current of 100 A.

Electrocaloric Effect of 8/65/35 PLZT Ceramics Sintered at Low Temperature (저온소결 8/65/35 PLZT 세라믹의 전기열량 효과)

  • In this study, in order to develop the composition ceramics with the excellent electrocaloric properties, 8/65/35 PLZT ceramics were fabricated by the conventional solid-state method with the addition of $Bi_2O_3$, CuO, $Li_2CO_3$ and the variation of sintering temperature from $930^{\circ}C$ to $990^{\circ}C$. The XRD pattern of all specimens indicated general perovskite structure and the rhombohedral phase were observed. Curie temperature ($T_c$) of all specimens was observed in the vicinity of about $190^{\circ}C$. Density, coercive field and remnant polarization of the specimen sintered at $950^{\circ}C$ was $7.55g/cm^3$, 8.895 kV/cm, $11.22{\mu}C/cm^2$, respectively. EC effect of PLZT ceramics was measured by indirect method and the temperature change ${\Delta}T$ due to the electrocaloric effect was calculated by Maxwell's relations. ${\Delta}T$ of ceramic sintered at $950^{\circ}C$ was $0.21^{\circ}C$ under application of 40 kV/cm at $190^{\circ}C$.

Study on Biaxial Flexural Strength by Glass-infiltration of Zirconia Ceramics (지르코니아 세라믹의 Glass-infiltration에 의한 2축 굽힘강도에 관한 연구)

  • This study was to evaluate the biaxial flexural strength of zirconia ceramics after glass-infiltration on zirconia core. The zirconia specimens were made with diameter-15mm, thickness-0.6mm using zirconia block which divided into 1) sintered group, 2) heat - treated group, 3) Glass - infiltrated group and experimented fracture strength by each 10 specimens in experimental group. The biaxial flexural test was performed at crosshead speed of 0.1${\beta}\;{\AE}$ min. The experiment result average fracture strength was shown 541.0${\beta}\acute{A}$ in sintered group and glass-infiltrated group as 662.2${\beta}\acute{A}$ river of 22.4% rise appear. Weibull coefficient sintered group is 3.462 and glass-infiltrated group improved believability about fracture strength from melting permeation processing of glass by 4.716.

  • Fine Si-Al-OH coprecipitate powders were prepared from Si- and Al-alkoxides by the hydrolysis method. $\beta$-Sialon powder was obtained from prepared Si-Al-OH coprecipitate by the simultaneous reduction and nitridation method. The syntehsized Sialon powder was pressureless sintered at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 90 min in N2 atmosphere. The characterization of the Sialon powder was performed with XRD, BET, SEM, TEM and particle size analysis. The sinterability and mechanical properties of sintered bodies were investigated in terms of relative density, M.O.R., fracture toughness, hardness and the morphology of microstructure. The highest values of their mechanical properties were obtained for the $\beta$-Sialon ceramics at Z=1 and those values are as follows : M.O.R., KIC and HV of $\beta$-Sialon ceramics(Z=1) are 499.1 MPa, 5.9MN/m3/2 and 18.7GPa, respectively.

  • BaTiO3 ceramics were sintered on Al2O3, MgAl2O4, MgO and Mg-, Ca-, Y-stabilized zirconia setters. Then the influence of setters on the microstructure of BaTiO3 ceramics and the stability of setters were investigated by SEM, EDAX and XRD analyses. The microstructure of BaTiO3 ceramics sintered on Al2O3, MgAl2O4, MgO and Mg-PSZ showed large grain growth, but little grain growth on Ce-TZP(Tetragonal Zirconia Policrystal). Mg-PSZ(Partially Stabilized Zirconia), Ca-PSZ, Ce-TZP setters showed extensive phase transformation. Y-TZP and fused Y-SZ (Stabilized Zirconia) setters were stable. The liquid sintering aids of BaTiO3 ceramics accelerate mass transport. The reaction of SrTiO3 in BaTiO3 with ZrO2 resulted in the formation of SrZrO3.

Fabrication of Porous Alumina Ceramics Using Hollow Microspheres as the Pore-forming Agent

  • Porous alumina ceramics with two different pore sizes were fabricated using hollow microspheres as the pore-forming agent. The relative density, total porosity, and microstructure of the obtained alumina ceramics were studied. It was found that the total porosity of sintered samples with different amounts of hollow microsphere content, from 2.0 to 4.0 wt%, was 69.3-75.6%. The interconnected and spherical cell morphology was obtained with 3.0 wt% hollow microsphere content. The resulting ceramics consist of a hierarchical structure with large-sized cells, and small-sized pores in the cell walls. Moreover, the compressive strength of the sintered samples varied from 8.3-11.5 MPa, corresponding to hollow microsphere contents of 2.0-4.0 wt%.

Mechanical Properties of Hot-Pressed SiC with Rare-Earth Oxide (희토류 산화물을 첨가한 일축가압소결 탄화규소의 기계적 특성)

  • Six different SiC ceramics with SiO2-Re2O3 (Re=Yb, Er, Y, Dy, Gd, Sm) as sintering additives have been fabricated by hot-pressing the SiC-Re2Si2O7 compositions at 1850$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr under a pressure of 25 MPa. The room temperature strneth and the fracture toughness of the hot-pressed ceramics were characterized and compared with those of the ceramics sintered with YAG (Y3Al5O12). Five SiC ceramics (Re=Yb, Er, Y, Dy, Gd) investigated herein showed sintered densities higher than 94% of theoretical. Tthe SiC-Re2Si2O7 compositions showed lower strength and comparable toughness to those from SiC-YAG composition, owing to the chemical reaction between SiO2 and SiC during sintering. SiC ceramics fabricated from a SiC-Y2Si2O7 composition showed the best mechanical properties of 490 MPa and 4.8 MPa$.$m1/2 among the compositions investigated herein.

  • The microwave dielectric properties of the $Ba_{5}Ta_{4}O_{15}$ ceramics with sintering temperature were investigated. All sample of the $Ba_{5}Ta_{4}O_{15}$ ceramics prepared by conventional mixed oxide method and sintered at $1450^{\circ}C{\sim}1575^{\circ}C$. Porosity of the $Ba_{5}Ta_{4}O_{15}$ ceramics was reduced with increasing sintering temperature. The bulk density, dielectric constant and Qualify factor increased with increasing sintering temperature. In the case of $Ba_{5}Ta_{4}O_{15}$ ceramics sintered at $1550^{\circ}C$, The bulk density, dielectric constant and quality factor were $7.31g/cm^2$ and 27.4, 30,635GHz, respectively.

Fabrication and Machinability of Mullite-ZrO2-Al2TiO5 Ceramics

  • The machinability of materials is an important factor in engineering applications. Many ceramic components that have complex shapes require machining, typically using diamond tools, which leads to high production cost. Machinable ceramics containing h-BN have recently been developed, but these materials are very expensive because of high cost of raw materials and machining. Therefore the development of low-cost machinable ceramics is desirable. In this study, mullite-$ZrO_2$ ceramics were prepared additions of $Al_2TiO_5$. $ZrSiO_4$, $Al_2O_3$, and $Al_2TiO_5$ powders mixed at various molar ratios with sintering at 1400, 1500, and $1600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. Phase formation and microstructure of the sintered ceramics were observed by XRD and SEM, respectively. The machinability of each specimen was tested using the micro-hole machining method. The machinability results show that the ceramics sintered at temperatures over $1500^{\circ}C$ can be used as good low-cost machinable mullite-$ZrO_2-Al_2TiO_5$ ceramics.

A Study on the Fabrication of 2700 Series Al-alloy Sintered for Automobile Application (자동차 부품용 2700계열 Al소결체 제작에 관한 연구)

  • In order to use as weight-reduced sintered parts for automobiles, mechanical properties of sintered compacts of 2712 Al-alloys containing 0, 10, 20, and 33% ceramics, respectively, were investigated in this study. (1)Regardless of ceramic contents, all sintered compacts possessed 4~7% pores. (2)After aging the compacts sintered for 12 minutes, tensile strength of the 2712 Al-alloys containing 0, 10, 20, and 33% ceramics was 165, 260, 256, and 166 N/$mm^2$, respectively, whereas those aged after sintering for 30 minutes exhibited the tensile strength of 186, 229, 219, and 202 N/$mm^2$, respectively. In addition, the 2712 sintered compact containing 10% ceramics showed the maximum elongation of about 3.6%, (3)After aging the 10% ceramic-containing sintered compacts reached a maximum apparent hardness ($H_RF$) of 97. (4)The minimum wear volume ($174{\times}10^{-3}mm^3$) was shown in the 10% ceramic-containing 2712 sintered compact after aging. From these results, the 2712 sintered compact containing 10% ceramics thought to be the most suitable one for the fabrication of aluminum engine part.
