The relation between sintered densities and porosities in UO$_2$ pellets is investigated. The open porosity decreases linearly up to about 95% T.D.,(theoretical density) as the sintered density increases whereas, above 96% T.D., sintered UO$_2$ pellets do not have any open pores. The fraction of open porosity to the total porosity also decreases linearly as the sintered density increases, though the slope is lower than that of open porosity and, above 95% T.D., the fraction decreases rapidly to approach a zero.
Hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramic was prepared using tuna bone powders and was characterized on properties of sintered samples. The aim was to prepare dense and bulk HA sintered suitable for clinical applications. Thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, microscopic observation, and mechanical evaluation were applied to characterize sintered HA to find optimum processing condition. The major phase of sintered HA was observed up to 1300$\^{C}$ and $\beta$-TCP was observed as temperature increased. The density of sintered HA was increased up to 1350$\^{C}$ and decreased with further increasing temperature. The flexural strength of sintered HA at 1350$\^{C}$ showed 58 MPa as the highest value in this work. The results suggest that the crystal phase and transformation characteristics of HA prepared from tuna bone are the same as the behavior of HA powders made by chemical synthesis.
In this study, to make an excellent heat pipe, the manufacturing technology of a sintered wick was investigated. Making a sintered wick is known to be very difficult but it has many advantages. For example, the porosity and pore size can be controlled and the capillary force is great. The mixture of copper and pore former powder was used as a wick material and ceramic-coated stainless steel was used as a mandrel which is necessary for vapor flow. To analyze the feature of the manufactured wick, not only porosity and pore size were measured but also the sintered structure was observed. A heat pipe with sintered wick was manufactured and the performance test of the heat pipe was performed in order to review cooling performance. The performance test results for the 4mm diameter heat pipe with the sintered wick shows the stability since the temperature difference between a evaporator and a condenser of the heat pipe is less than 4.4$^{\circ}C$, and thermal resistance is less than 0.7$^{\circ}C$/W, In the meantime the composite wick that is composed with sintered and woven wire was also examined. The heat transfer limit of the heat pipe with composite wick was enhanced about 51%~60% compare to the one with sintered wick.
For the purpose of investigating the effect of sintering atmosphere and carbon addition on sintered density and microstructural characteristics, the M3/2 grade high speed steel powders with the addition of carbon are sintered in vacuum and $20%H_2/79%N_2/l%CH_4$ gas atmosphere. With the addition of 0 wt%C, 0.45wt%C and 1.15 wt%C the optimum sintering temperatures decrease down to $1260^{\circ}C$, $1210^{\circ}C$ and $1150^{\circ}C$ respectively for the vacuum sintered specimen, and also decrease down to $1130^{\circ}C$, $1120^{\circ}C$ and $1115^{\circ}C$ for the gas sintered specimen. The threshold temperatures for full densification decrease steeply with increasing carbon content of the sintered specimen, while this temperatures are slowly decreased at high carbon content. The vacuum sintered specimen shows the primary carbides of MC and $M_6C$ type at the optimum sintering temperature, and eutectic carbides of $M_2C$ and Fe-Cr type are produced in the oversintered specimen. The gas sintered specimen exhibits M6C and Fe-Cr type primary carbides at the optimum sintering temperature. The eutectic carbides of $M_6C$ and Fe-Cr type and MX type carbonitride are shown for the oversintered specimen in the gas atmosphere. The hardness of gas sintered specimen shows high value of 830-860 Hv due to the increment of carbide precipitation.
There are various wick types for heat pipe. In the present study, the manufacturing technology of a sintered wick among various wick types is discussed. The sintering technology using metal has been applied broadly in the field of electronic-telecommunication as well as heat pipes. A study of manufacturing procedure and characteristic of sintered wick for heat pipe have been performed. Copper powder was used as wick material and stainless steel as a mandrel. A manufacturing technology of the mandrel for arranging vapor core in heat pipe, a sintering technology by first or second times and operating temperature for sintering, the measurements of a porosity, pore size, and pore distribution of sintered wick were considered. In the meantime, a heat pipe with sintered wick has been manufactured and a performance test of the heat pipe has been performed in order to review cooling performance. The performance test results for the 4mm diameter heat pipe with the sintered wick shows the stability since the temperature difference between a evaporator and a condenser of the heat pipe is less than $4.4^{\circ}C$, and thermal resistance is less than $0.7^{\circ}C/W$.
A composition containing a-$Si_3N_4$ with 5w/0 $Y_2O_3$ and 4w/0 $Al_2O_3$ was hot-pressed at 1, $650^{\circ}C$ and 350kg/$cm^2$ for 1.5hrs and specimens of the same composition were pressureless-sintered at 1, 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 and 5hrs. By X-ray diffraction it was found that hot-pressed specimens were consisted of $\alpha$-and $\beta$-$Si_3N_4$ and sintered specimens were consisted of $\beta$-$Si_3N_4$ and $Si_3N-4Y_2O_3$ which was crystallized out from the grainboundary phase. The 5-hr sintered specimens had higher degree of crystallization than the 1.5 hr sintered specimens. Among these three different specimens the 5-hr sintered specimens showed the highest strength by hot MOR test at 1, 00$0^{\circ}C$. The SPT diagram for the 5-hr sintered $Si_3N_4$ was constructed by measurements of the stress rate dependence of fracture strength.
Advanced composite-sintered bushings are widely utilized in the areas of excavators and injection molding machines as a journal bearing. Since the bearings are mainly used under high loads, service life should be long and the stored oil of inner bushings has to be continually fed into the bearing. The composite-sintered bushings are consisted of the two different materials; outer steel materials and inner porous sintered materials respectively. High temperature diffusion bonding has been applied for holding the both materials of the bushing together. Therefore, it is very important that the bonding reliability has to be assured and evaluated in manufacturing process. Finite element method (FEM) is performed in order to evaluate the minimum allowable flaw sizes that are possibly generated in the composite-sintered bushings. Additionally, the composite-sintered bushings were undergone ultrasonic C-scan tests to find out the size of inherent flaws through artificially simulated UT signal analysis.
Densificationbehavior of conventional austenitic stainless steel powder compacts was studied by comparing the relative density of sintered compact(Ds)with that of green compacts(Dg)prepared with various catbon contents and P/M process. Dg of 304and 316 powders by warm compaction under pressure of 686 MPa at heating temperature of powder(553K) and dies (573K) were 80% and 81%, repectively, whichwere 2 and 3% higher than those of conventional green compacts at the same pressure. Ds of 304 compacts sintered at 1373K in H2 gas has the same value of 84% max. regardless of compacting temperature, and Ds of 316 compacts at the same sintering conditions were 80% by conventional compaction and 83% by warm compaction. Oxygen contents of 304 and 316 sintered compacts were increased 1.43∼2.94% and 0.010∼0.921% higher than those of raw powders and warm green compacts, respectively. In other case, Ds of 316 compacts sintered at 1573K in vacuum had the same value of 86%max. And Ds of 316 compacts at the same sintering conditions were 83% and 86% by conventional and warm compaction, respectively. Oxygen contents of 304 sintered compacts were 0.321% and 0.360%, and in case of 316, they were 0.419% and 0.182% by the respective compating condition. With carbon additions in the range 0.1∼0.6% Ds increased to the extent of 86∼89% in 304 sintered compacts, and to 82∼84% and 85∼87% in 316 according to different two compacting peocesses compared to those of sintered compacts without carbon addition.
In the present study, we investigated the austenite stability of a sintered Fe-based nanocrystalline alloy. The volume fraction of austenite was measured based on the X-ray diffraction data of sintered Fe-based nanocrystalline alloys, which were prepared by high-energy ball milling and spark plasma sintering. The sintered alloy samples showed a higher volume fraction of austenite at room temperature as compared to the equilibrium volume fraction of austenite obtained using thermodynamic calculations, which resulted from the nanosized crystalline structure of the sintered alloy. It was proved that the austenite stability of the sintered Fe-based alloy increased with a rise in the amount of austenite stabilizing elements such as Mn, Ni, and C; however, it increased more effectively with a decrease in the actual grain size. Furthermore, we proposed a new equation to predict the martensite starting temperature for sintered Fe-based alloys.
Neodymium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) sintered magnets have excellent magnetic properties such as the remanence, coercive force, and the maximum energy product compared to other hard magnetic materials. The coercive force of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets is improved by the addition of heavy rare earth elements such as dysprosium and terbium instead of neodymium. Then, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets increases. However, additional elements have increased the production cost of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets. Hence, a study on the control of the microstructure of Nd-Fe-B magnets is being conducted. As the coercive force of magnets improves, the grain size of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grain is close to 300 nm because they are nucleation-type magnets. In this study, fine particles of Nd-Fe-B are prepared with various grinding energies in the pulverization process used for preparing sintered magnets, and the microstructure and magnetic properties of the magnets are investigated.
