  • A single-switch parallel resonant converter for induction heating is implemented. The circuit consists of an input LC-filter, a bridge rectifier, and a controlled power switch. The switch operates in soft commutation mode and serves as a high frequency generator. The output power is controlled via the switching frequency. A steady state analysis of the converter operation is presented. A closed-loop circuit model is also presented, and the experimental results are compared with the simulation results.

  • This paper proposes a new technique for improving the efficiency of single phase high frequency switch mode boost converter. This converter includes an additional boost converter that follows the main hish frequency switching device. The additional converter, which is controlled at lower frequencies, bypasses almost all the current in the main switch and the high frequency switching loss is greatly reduced. Both switching devices are controlled by a simple method; each controller consists of a one-shot multivibrator, a comparator and an AND gate, and the maximum switching frequency can be limited without any clock generator. The converter works cooperatively in high efficiency and acts as though it were a conventional high frequency switch mode converter with one switching device. This paper describes the proposed converter configuration, design, and discusses the steady state performance concerning the switching loss reduction and efficiency improvement. and the proposed method is verified by computer simulation.

  • In this paper, a dc-dc power converter scheme with the FPGA based technology is proposed to apply for solar power system which has many features such as the good waveform, high efficiency, low switching losses, and low acoustic noises. The circuit configuration is designed by the conventional control type converter circuit using the isolated dc power supply. This new scheme can be more widely used for industrial power conversion system and many other purposes. Also, I proposed an efficient photovoltaic power interface circuit incorporated with a FPGA based DC-DC converter and a sine-pwm control method full-bridge inverter. The FPGA based DC-DC converter operates at high switching frequency to make the output current a sine wave, whereas the full-bridge inverter operates at low switching frequency which is determined by the ac frequency. As a result, we can get a 1.72% low THD in present state using linear control method. Moreover, we can use stepping control method, we can obtain the switching losses by Sp measured as 0.53W. This paper presents the design of a single-phase photovoltaic inverter model and the simulation of its performance.

  • A new small signal stability analysis method for eigenvalue analysis is presented. This method utilizes the Resistive Companion Form (RCF) for the computation of the transition matrix over a specified time interval, which corresponds to a single cycle operation of the system. This method is applicable to any system, with or without switching element. An illustrative example of the method is presented and the eigenvalues are compared with those of the conventional state space method (analog) in order to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed eigenvalue analysis method. Also, the variations of oscillation modes that are caused by the switching operation can be precisely analyzed using this method.

  • This paper presents a high efficiency resonant flyback converter using a single-chip microcontroller. The proposed converter primary performs the resonant switching by applying the asymmetrical pulse-width modulation (APWM) to the half-bridge power topology. And the converter secondary uses the diode flyback rectifier as its power topology and operates with the zero current switching (ZCS). Thus the proposed converter achieves high efficiency. The total structure of proposed converter is very simple because it uses a single-chip microcontroller and bootstrap circuit for its control and drive, respectively. First, this paper describes the converter operation according to each operation mode and shows its steady-state analysis. And the software control algorithm and drive circuits operating the proposed converter are explained. Then, the operation characteristics of proposed converter are shown through the experimental results of an implemented prototype based on each explanation.

  • This paper presents the new power dissipation model of individual switching device in a high-level modular multilevel converter (MMC), which can be mostly used in voltage sourced converter (VSC) based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system and flexible AC transmission system (FACTS). Also, the voltage balancing method based on sorting algorithm is newly proposed to advance the MMC functionalities by effectively adjusting switching variations of the sub-module (SM). The proposed power dissipation model does not fully calculate the average power dissipation for numerous switching devices in an arm module. Instead, it estimates the power dissipation of every switching element based on the inherent operational principle of SM in MMC. In other words, the power dissipation is computed in every single switching event by using the polynomial curve fitting model with minimum computational efforts and high accuracy, which are required to manage the large number of SMs. After estimating the value of power dissipation, the thermal condition of every switching element is considered in the case of external disturbance. Then, the arm modeling for high-level MMC and its control scheme is implemented with the electromagnetic transient simulation program. Finally, the case study for applying to the MMC based HVDC system is carried out to select the appropriate insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) module in a steady-state, as well as to estimate the proper thermal condition of every switching element in a transient state.
