  • This study aimed to develop a scale to measure the family strength of single-parent families. We analyzed the everyday life and demands of single-parent families using the theory of family strength to draw 78 items that encompass family basis, relationships, roles, social networks and family culture. Using a sample of 286 single-parent families through an online survey platform, we examined the factor structure of the items and selected 48 items based on the results of the factor analysis. Reliability, criterion and construct validity were also examined. The final scale comprised of five domains ; basis, parents' role, work-life balance, social network, lifestyle and household management. This scale can be used as an assessment measure of the family strength of single-parent families for consulting, case management and suggesting various programs in the field. This merit will help enhance the quality of programing for single-parent families at the Healthy Family Support Center and the development of family strength scales for various types of families.

  • This study sought to examine the effects of current single-parent family policies on the psychological adaptation of family members in single-parent homes, while also confirming that visitation and child support are indeed in the best interests of children in such cases. An online survey was conducted in 2021 for divorced single mothers and their children (aged 11 to 19) living in metropolitan regions (Seoul, Kyunggi, and Incheon). A total of 171 dyads, comprised of single mothers and their adolescent children, participated in this study. Using the collected data, descriptive statistical analysis and structural equation modeling were performed. The major results of this study are as follows. First, visitation with fathers was not significantly associated with self-esteem, aggression, or life satisfaction among the participating adolescent children. On the other hand, when child support was paid, aggression among adolescents was lower than when child support was not paid. Second, neither visitation nor child support was significantly associated with single mothers' levels of depression and life satisfaction. The enforcement of child support guarantees the welfare of children and conforms to the principle of promoting the best interests of minor children. Therefore, child support should be continuously encouraged and supported by agencies in accordance with current law. In order for the implementation of visitation to be in the best interest of the child, the amount and quality of visitation should be secured so that the child can still recognize their non-custodial parents as "caregivers."

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of discrimination experienced by single-parent household heads and their children on their level of depression. As its sample, the study used data from 1,631 relevant respondents to the 2021 Single-Parent Family Status Survey conducted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS, version 25.0, including descriptive statistics, difference verification, correlations, and regression analysis. First, general characteristics were classified as single-parent and family characteristics, health factors, and economic resources, and differences in depression were analyzed accordingly. Among the health factors, health status, frequency of exercise, and methods of alleviating depression were significant. Regarding economic resources, housing type and monthly household income were significant factors. Second, factors influencing the impact of discrimination experiences on depression were analyzed. The results indicated that among health factors, health status was significant. With regard to economic resources, monthly household income, discrimination experiences of household heads, discrimination experienced by children, and overall discrimination experiences were significant. No significant variables were identified among single-parent and family characteristic factors. Therefore, it was evident that health factors and economic resources, as well as discrimination experiences, are important variables that increase depression in single-parent household heads. • Grit is a person's passion and perseverance that drive them to achieve long-term and meaningful goals. The purpose of this study was to identify practical resources that can affect single parents' grit. Using the fourth-year panel data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018), descriptive statistics were produced and a correlation analysis was conducted for 284 single parents. Hierarchical regression analysis was also performed to explore the demographic factors, personal resources(psychological, lifestyle/health), and family resources(family relationships/child, economic) that affect single parents' grit. First, the correlation analysis revealed that single parents' grit had a significant correlation with age, education status, life satisfaction, happiness, self-esteem, smartphone dependency, physical activity time, frequency of breakfast consumption, household size, parent's satisfaction with child's school achievement and school adjustment, subjective family economic status, and private education expenses. Second, the hierarchical regression analysis revealed that education status, self-esteem, employment status, smartphone dependency, physical activity time, household size, parent's satisfaction with child's school achievement, and subjective family economic status were significant factors affecting single parents' grit. Based on the research results, this study suggests directions for programs and policies to provide a stable environment for single-parent families to raise their children.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose measure for the effects of perceived parenting attitudes and emotional problems on life satisfaction among adolescents in single parent families with the parent resource perspective. The study consisted of 230 first grade middle school students from single parent (living with either mother or father only) families in the 4th year panel (2013) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), National Youth Policy Institute (NYPI). All statistical data analyses were performed using SPSS version 21.0. The findings of this study are as follows. First, lower levels of depression and aggression were found among adolescents who perceived parenting attitude as more affectionate. On the contrary, higher levels of depression and aggression were detected among adolescents who perceived parenting attitude as more intrusiveness. The more the inconsistent parenting practices perceived by adolescents, the higher the degree of depression. Second, a higher level of life satisfaction was found among adolescent who were more likely to perceive positive parenting attitudes including monitoring, affection and reasoning. However, there was no significant correlation between negative parenting behavior and life satisfaction. Third, a lower level of life satisfaction was observed among adolescent who were more likely to perceive emotional problems such as depression, aggression and social withdrawal. Fourth, according to the analysis on the effects of parenting attitudes and emotional problems on life satisfaction, affection parenting of all positive parenting styles and depression among emotional problems had an impact on life satisfaction. The more affectionate a parent is with his/her children in parenting, the lower the degree of depression in adolescents, and the lower degree of depression in adolescents, the higher degree of life satisfaction was found among adolescents from single parent households.

  • The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how divorced mothers had decided to take custody of their children and became single mothers. The experiences of their lives after divorce were also explored. Data were collected from 17 Korean divorced mothers who were divorced between 2004 and 2009, and were raising at least one minor child. The data were analyzed based on the phenomenological data analysis method. Three main themes were identified: (a) reasons for deciding to have physical custody of the children, (b) mothers' experiences of adjustment after divorce, and (c) mothers' need for a policy concerning the well-being of their families. According to the divorced mothers, they decided to have physical custody of the children since they believed raising children was their natural duty of mothers or they were the most appropriate ones to raise the children rather than the fathers. While the mothers were satisfied with their lives after divorce in general, they also experienced difficulties including child care and financial strain. In particular, most mothers experienced work-family conflict related to the lack of reliable child care. When their family lives and work lives collided, the mothers put their children first and chose jobs that helped them take care of their children at the same time. The divorced single mothers hoped that the social safety net for single parents would expand to support their independence. Implications for single-parent policy are discussed.

  • This study used latent class analysis to identify heterogeneous subgroups with respect to health condition among adolescents. We also examined associations between latent classes and verified to determine how the patterns of health condition relate to social capital. This study used data from Korean Survey on the Rights of Children and Youth in 2015, which consists of 6,912 from middle and high school students. The findings are as follows. Latent class analysis revealed a three-class solution. Results indicated that family social capital and school capital significantly verified to the above latent classes all family type. But, community social capital not significantly predicted to the above latent classes only single parent families. Policy implications for improving the health condition of adolescents are discussed.
