  • Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of environmentally- friend natural fiber reinforced polymer composites playa very important role in controlling the overall mechanical properties. In this work the IFSS of Ramie and Kenaf fibers/epoxy systems were evaluated using the combination of micromechanical technique, microdroplet test to find out an optimal condition in accordance with final purpose by comparing to each other. Clamping effect on fiber elongation was determined as well. In addition, the mechanical properties of the natural fibers were investigated using single fiber tensile test and analyzed statistically by both uni- and bimodal Weibull distributions. Microfailure modes of different natural fiber structures were observed using optical microscope.

  • Cure monitoring and nondestructive characteristics of carbon fiber/epoxy composites were evaluated by the measurements of electrical resistance and acoustic emission (AE). Logarithmic electrical resistivity of the untreated single-carbon fiber composite increased suddenly to infinity when the fiber fracture occurred, whereas that of the electrodeposited composite increased relatively broadly up to infinity. As curing temperature increased. logarithmic electrical resistivity of steel fiber increased. On the other hand, electrical resistance of carbon fiber decreased due to the intrinsic electrical properties based on the band theory. The apparent modulus of the electrodeposited composite was higher than that of the untreated composite due to the improved interfacial shear strength (IFSS).

  • Polyvinylidene di-fluoride (PVDF) film sensor appeared to be practically useful for the structural health monitoring of composite materials and structures. PVDF film sensors were either attached to or embedded in the graphite/epoxy composite (CFRP) samples to detect the fatigue damage at the bondline of single-lap joints or the tensile failure of unidirectional laminates. PVDF sensors were sensitive enough to detect and determine the crack front in linear location since composites usually produce very energetic acoustic emission (AE). PVDF sensors are extremely cost-effective, as flexible as other plastic films, in low profile as thin as a few tens of microns, and have relatively wide-band response, all of which characteristics are readily utilized for the structural health monitoring of composite structures. Signals due to fatigue damage showed a characteristics of mode II (shear) type failure whereas those from fiber breakage at DEN notches showed that of mode I (tensile) type fracture.

  • In the tensile loading of sheet metals made from polycrystalline aluminum alloys, a single deformation band appears inclined to the elongation axis in the early stage of plastic deformation, and symmetric double bands are observed in the later stage. This character of the localized deformation bands has been analyzed by a perturbation method. Macroscopic slip modes composed of slip planes and slip directions were assumed to describe the tensile and shear strains. Along time integration path, the value of the perturbation growth parameter was checked to find at which angle to the elongation axis the localized deformation bands are generated. It was shown that the mode of the localized deformation is related to asymmetry of material property.

  • The conventional ejector-diffuser system makes use of high pressure primary stream to propel the secondary stream through pure shear action for the purposes of transport or compression of fluid. It has been widely used in many industrial applications such as seawater desalination, solar refrigeration, marine engineering, etc. The present study is performed numerically to study the performance of a two-stage ejector-diffuser system. The detailed flow phenomenon of the ejector-diffuser system has been critically predicted by means of the numerical approach using compressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The axi-symmetric supersonic ejector-diffuser flow has been solved by a fully implicit finite volume scheme with a two-equation k-omega turbulence model. The numerical results are validated with existing experimental data. Detailed flow physics and their contributions on ejector performance are detected to compare both single-stage and two-stage ejectors. The performance improvement on the ejector-diffuser system is discussed in terms of the mass flux ratio and the coefficient of power.

  • In this paper presents bending characteristic of single wall carbon nanotube reinforced functionally graded composite (SWCNTRC-FG) plates. The finite element implementation of bending analysis of laminated composite plate via well-established higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT). A seven degree of freedom and $C^0$ continuity finite element model using eight noded isoperimetric elements is developed for precise computation of deflection and stresses of SWCNTRC plate subjected to sinusoidal transverse load. The finite element implementation is carried out through a finite element code developed in MATLAB. The results obtained by present approach are compared with the results available in the literatures. The effective material properties of the laminated SWCNTRC plate are used by Mori-Tanaka method. Numerical results have been obtained with different parameters, width-to-thickness ratio (a/h), stress distribution profile along thickness direction, different SWCNTRC-FG plate, boundary condition, through the thickness (z/h) ratio, volume fraction of SWCNT.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the turbulence intermittency measuring methods across the boundary layer in the transition region. A single type hot-wire probe was used to measure instantaneous streamwise velocities in laminar, transitional and turbulent boundary layer To estimate wall shear stresses on the flat plate, near wall mean velocities are applied to the principle of CPM. Distribution of intermittency factor is obtained by dual-slope method and compared to the results of four methods,$\'{u},\;\{U}$, TERA and M-TERA method. In these methods, M-TERA shows a good agreement in the near wall region. However, the result of M-TERA method shows that intermittency factor is underestimated in the outer part and outside of the boundary layer and the dimensional constant of M-TERA method should be changed appropriately depending on measuring point.

  • The bending rigidity of yarn is derived in terms of physicil and mechanical characteristics of its constituent fibers and yarns structural parametrs. Theoretical analysis shows that the twist correcti on factor for the bending rigidity of yarn decreases with increase of the ratio of Young's m()dulus to the shear modulus of the constituent fibers. Also, the bending rigidity of yarn decreases as the surface helix angle of yarn increases.

  • It has not been performed to inspect the underclad cracking in Korea nuclear plant since there is no Code Requirements for inspection. However, underclad cracks in nuclear pressure vessels were reported firstly in 1970. The objection of this study is to be established the ultrasonic inspection techniques for underclad cracking. The ultrasonic inspection of bimetalic stainless steel weld is very difficult by high attenuation and multiple scattering at weld surface and weld/base metal interface. The various inspection methods using $70^{\circ}$ refracted longitudinal wave, 50/70 tandem transducer, $45^{\circ}\;and\;60^{\circ}$ single shear wave are compared. Experiments on limited specimens applied same condition to nuclear pressure vessels shows that $70^{\circ}$ refracted longitudinal wave method is the best one for the detection of underclad cracks. 50/70 tandem transducer using SPOT(Satellite Pulse Observation Technique) is more effective for underclad crack sizing than other sizing methods.

  • To predict vibrational energy density and intensity of partitioned complex system structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges, Power Flow Finite Element Method(PFFEM) programs for the plate elements are developed. The flexural, longitudinal and shear waves in plates are formulated and the joint element equations for multi-couped plates are fully developed. Also the wave transmission approach has been introduced to cover the energy transmission and reflection at the joint plate elements. Using the developed PFFEM program the energy density and intensity of the submarine and automobile shape structures are predicted with a harmonic point force at a single frequency.
