Dispersion-Managed Links Formed of SMFs and DCFs with Irregular Dispersion Coefficients and Span Lengths

  • The various techniques to compensate for the signal distortion due to the group velocity dispersion (GVD) and nonlinear Kerr effects of optical fibers in the optical links have been proposed in the literature. We propose a flexible dispersion-managed link configuration consisted of single-mode and dispersion-compensating fibers with irregular dispersion coefficients over all fiber spans, and an optical phase conjugator added midway along the optical links. By distributing the lengths of the single mode fibers, we achieve a flexible optical link. The simultaneous ascending and descending distribution of the single-mode fiber lengths before and after the optical phase conjugator, respectively, best compensates the distorted wavelength division multiplexed signals in the optical link with non-fixed coefficients. Our result is consistent with those of our previous work on fixed coefficients. Therefore, to improve the compensation at any magnitude of dispersion coefficient, we must artificially distribute the lengths of the single-mode fibers into a dispersion-managed link.

Transmission Characteristics of Long-Period Fiber Gratings Using Periodically Corroded Single-Mode Fibers

  • Transmission characteristics of long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) fabricated by periodically etching a conventional single-mode fiber (SMF) are investigated. After coating the SMF with photoresist, the cladding of the SMF is symmetrically and periodically removed by using a wet etching technique resulting in the formation of the LPFG. Tensile strain reinforces the coupling strength between the core and the cladding mode based on the photoelastic effect. The extinction ratio of the SMF-based LPFG at a wavelength of 1550.8 nm is measured to be -15.1 dB when the applied strain is $600{\mu}{\varepsilon}$. The ascent of ambient index shifts the resonant wavelength to shorter wavelength because of the increase of the effective refractive index of the cladding mode. The extinction ratio is diminished by increase in the ambient index because of the induction of the optical attenuation of the cladding mode. The transmission characteristics of the proposed LPFG with variations in torsion are also measured. The photoelastic effect based on torsion changes the extinction ratio and the resonant wavelength of the proposed SMF-based LPFG. The polarization-dependent loss of the LPFG is also increased by torsion because of the torsion-induced birefringence. The polarization-dependent loss of the LPFG at torsion of 8.5 rad/m is measured to be 3.9 dB.

In-line Variable Optical Attenuator Based on the Bending of the Tapered Single Mode Fiber

  • We propose a simple in-line variable optical attenuator (VOA) based on the bending effect of tapered single mode fibers. The influence of the taper structure and the reflective index of the external medium surrounding the taper region on the bending loss of the tapered fiber have been investigated experimentally. An attenuation range exceeding 35 dB and a very low excess loss of < 0.2 dB at 1550 nm were achieved. The measured polarization dependent loss of the present VOA at the attenuation level of 10 dB, 20 dB, and 30 dB were 0.1 dB, 0.2 dB, and 0.5 dB, respectively.

  • 40 Gbps WDM Systems using super-Gaussian RZ pulses have been studied by numerical simulation to optimize their performance. The assumption of standard single mode fiber is valid when existing WDM systems are required to upgrade their performance to 40Gbps. It is shown that the standard single mode fiber can transmit optical signals over 720 km (Q > 10) by optimizing optical and electrical filter characteristics at the receiver and by compensation of dispersion. However, it is also shown that ${\pm}0.3%$ dispersion compensation tolerance per span (80 km) could prohibit transmitting over 320km (Q > 10). In addition, a duty cycle of less than 0.4 degrades system performance significantly.

  • We have demonstrated a highly efficient cladding-pumped ytterbium-doped fiber laser, generating $>$2.1 kW of continuous-wave output power at 1.1 μm with 74% slope efficiency with respect to launched pump power. The beam quality factor ($M^2$) was better than 1.2. The maximum output power was only limited by available pump power, showing no evidence of roll-over even at the highest output power. We present data on how the beam quality depends on the fiber parameter, based on our current and past fiber laser developments. We also discuss the ultimate power-capability of our fiber in terms of thermal management, Raman nonlinear scattering, and material damage, and estimate it to 10 kW.

  • 본 논문에서는 3단으로 구성된 전광섬유(all-fiber) Master Oscillator Power Amplifier (MOPA) 구조의 협대역 이터븀 첨가 편광 유지 광섬유 레이저 증폭에 대해 보고한다. 편광유지 단일모드 출력은 85%의 기울기 효율을 가지는 400 W 출력을 얻을 수 있었고, 레이저 반치폭은 2.5 GHz였다. 더불어, 이득매질 광섬유를 11 cm 지름으로 코일링하여 모드 불안정성을 완화할 수 있었다. 추가적으로 레이저 출력 증가를 위한 방법들에 대해 논하였다.

  • 장거리 ($50\;fiber\;spans{\times}80km$) 전송 링크의 융통적 구성을 위해 단일 모드 광섬유 (SMF; single mode fiber)의 길이와 중계 구간 당 잉여 분산 (RDPS; residual dispersion per span)이 랜덤하게 분포하는 링크에서 광 위상 공액과 결합된 분산 제어 (DM; dispersion management)를 통한 왜곡된 WDM 채널의 보상 특성을 살펴보았다. WDM 채널들의 입사 전력이 0 dBm 이하로 제한된다면 SMF 길이와 RDPS가 랜덤하게 분포하는 링크를 통한 보상 효과가 균일하게 분포하는 링크에서의 보상 효과와 유사하게 나타나는 것을 확인하였다. 이는 제안한 랜덤 분포 링크 구조를 이용하면 장거리 WDM 전송 링크 설계와 구축에서 융통성을 확보할 수 있다는 것을 의미한다.

Highly Birefringent Slotted-porous-core Photonic Crystal Fiber with Elliptical-hole Cladding for Terahertz Applications

  • We propose a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a slotted porous core and elliptical-hole cladding, for high birefringence in the terahertz regime. Asymmetry in the guided mode is obtained mainly by using arrays of elliptical air holes in the TOPAS® polymer cladding. We investigate the tradeoff between several structural parameters and find optimized values that can have a high birefringence while satisfying the single-mode condition. The optical properties in the terahertz regime are thoroughly analyzed in numerical simulations, using a full-vector finite-element method with the perfectly-matched-layer condition. In an optimal design, the proposed photonic crystal fiber shows a high birefringence of 8.80 × 10-2 and an effective material loss of 0.07 cm-1 at a frequency of 1 THz, satisfying the single-mode-guidance condition at the same time. The proposed PCF would be useful for various polarization-management applications in the terahertz range.
