  • The approaches to overcome the limited spatial resolution and the limited dynamic range of image sensors have been studied independently. A high resolution image is reconstructed from multiple low resolution observations and a wide dynamic range image is reconstructed from differently exposed multiple low dynamic range in es based on signal processing approach. In practical situations, it is reasonable to address them in a unified context because the recorded image suffers from limitations of both spatial resolution and dynamic range. In this paper, the image acquisition process including limited spatial resolution and limited dynamic range is modelled. With the image acquisition model, the response function of the imaging system is estimated and the single image of which spatial resolution and dynamic range are simultaneously enhanced is obtained. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional approaches that perform the high resolution and wide dynamic range reconstruction sequentially with respect to both objective and subjective criteria.

  • This paper proposes a resolution enhancement method which can reconstruct high-resolution facial images from single-frame, low-resolution facial images. The proposed method is derived from example-based reconstruction methods and the morphable face model. In order to improve the performance of the example-based reconstruction, we propose the region-based reconstruction method which can maintain the characteristics of local facial regions. Also, in order to use the capability of the morphable face model to face resolution enhancement problems, we define the extended morphable face model in which an extended face is composed of a low-resolution face, its interpolated high-resolution face, and the high-resolution equivalent, and then an extended face is separated by an extended shape vector and an extended texture vector. The encouraging results show that the proposed methods can be used to improve the performance of face recognition systems, particularly to enhance the resolution of facial images captured from visual surveillance systems.

  • According to the government's announcement of the safety management enhancement policy for small and medium-sized private construction sites, the subject of mandatory CCTV installation has been expanded from large construction sites to small and medium-sized construction sites. However, since the existing CCTV at construction sites has been used for simple control for safety management, so research is needed for monitoring of construction sites. Therefore, in this study, three vanishing points were calculated based on a single image taken with a monocular camera, and then a camera matrix containing interior orientation parameters information was determined. And the accuracy was verified by calculating the height of the target object from the height of the reference object. Through height determination experiments using vanishing points based on a monocular camera, it was possible to determine the height of target objects only with a single image without separately surveying of ground control points. As a result of the accuracy evaluation, the root mean square error was ±0.161m. Therefore, it is determined that the progress of construction work at the construction sites can be monitored through the single image taken using the single camera.

  • In this paper, we convert underwater acoustic signal made by sonar system into digital image. We propose the algorithm that detects target candidate and emphasizes information of target introducing image processing technique for the digital image. The process detecting underwater target estimates background noise in underwater acoustic signal changing irregularly, recomposes it. and eliminates background from original image. Therefore, it generates initial target group. Also, it generates weighted map through proceeding doppler information, ensures information for target candidate through filtering using weighted map for image eliminated background noise, and decides the target candidate area in the single frame. In this paper, we verified that proposed algorithm almost had eliminated the noise generated irregularly in underwater acoustic signal made by simulation, targets had been displayed more surely in the image of underwater acoustic signal through filtering and process of target detection.

  • A number of algorithms for improving the image quality of low light images have been studied using a single image or multiple exposure images. The low light image is low in contrast and has a large amount of noise, which limits the identification of information of the subject. This paper proposes the hardware design of algorithms that improve the quality of low light image using 2 multiple exposure images taken with a dual camera. The proposed hardware structure is designed in real time processing in a way that does not use frame memory and line memory using transfer function. The proposed hardware design has been designed using Verilog and validated in Modelsim. Finally, when the proposed algorithm is implemented on FPGA using xc7z045-2ffg900 as the target board, the maximum operating frequency is 167.617MHz. When the image size is 1920x1080, the total clock cycle time is 2,076,601 and can be processed in real time at 80.7fps.

  • Compressive sensing (CS) has to face with two challenges of computational complexity reconstruction and low coding efficiency. As a solution, this paper presents a novel spatially scalable Kronecker two layer compressive sensing framework which facilitates reconstruction up to three spatial resolutions as well as much improved CS coding performance. We propose a dual-resolution sensing matrix based on the quincunx sampling grid which is applied to the base layer. This sensing matrix can provide a fast-preview of low resolution image at encoder side which is utilized for predictive coding. The enhancement layer is encoded as the residual measurement between the acquired measurement and predicted measurement data. The low resolution reconstruction is obtained from the base layer only while the high resolution image is jointly reconstructed using both two layers. Experimental results validate that the proposed scheme outperforms both conventional single layer and previous multi-resolution schemes especially at high bitrate like 2.0 bpp by 5.75dB and 5.05dB PSNR gain on average, respectively.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to objectively detect simulated tooth ankylosis using a novel method involving cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: Tooth ankylosis was simulated in single-rooted human permanent teeth, and CBCT scans were acquired at different current levels (5, 6.3, and 8 mA) and voxel sizes (0.08, 0.125, and 0.2). In axial reconstructions, a line of interest was perpendicularly placed over the periodontal ligament space of 21 ankylosed and 21 non-ankylosed regions, and the CBCT grey values of all voxels along the line of interest were plotted against their corresponding X-coordinates through a line graph to generate a profile. The image contrast was increased by 30% and 60% and the profile assessment was repeated. The internal area of the resulting parabolas was obtained from all images and compared between ankylosed and non-ankylosed regions under different contrast enhancement conditions, voxel sizes, and mA levels using multi-way analysis of variance with the Tukey post hoc test(α=0.05). Results: The internal area of the parabolas of all non-ankylosed regions was significantly higher than that of the ankylosed regions(P<0.05). Contrast enhancement led to a significantly greater internal area of the parabolas of non-ankylosed regions (P<0.05). Overall, voxel size and mA did not significantly influence the internal area of the parabolas(P>0.05). Conclusion: The proposed novel method revealed a relevant degree of applicability in the detection of simulated tooth ankylosis; increased image contrast led to greater detectability.

  • Wang and Ward developed an image contrast enhancement method called WTHE (Weighted and Thresholded Histogram Equalization). In this paper, we propose an improved variant of WTHE called DWTHE(Decomposable WTHE) that enhances WTHE through the use of histogram decomposition. Specifically, DWTHE divides an input histogram by using image's mean brightness or equally-spaced brightness points, computes a probability value for each sub-histogram, modifies the sub-histograms by using those probability values as weights, and then performs histogram equalization on the modified input histogram. As opposed to WTHE that uses a single weight, DWTHE uses multiple weights derived from histogram decomposition. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the previous histogram equalization based methods.

  • This paper proposes an optical system for complex holographic display that enhances the quality of the reconstructed three-dimensional image. This work focuses on a new design for an optical system and the evaluation of the complex holographic display, using a single spatial light modulator (SLM) and a circular grating. The optical system is based on a 4-f system in which the imaginary and real information of the hologram is displayed on concentric rectangular areas of the SLM and circular grating. Thus, this method overcomes the lack of accuracy in the pixel positions between two window holograms in previous studies, and achieves a higher intensity of the real object points of the reconstructed hologram than the original phase-reconstructed hologram. The proposed method provides approximately 30% less NMRS (Normal Root Mean Square) error, compared to previous systems, which is verified by both simulation and optical experiment.
