Modeling and Analysis of Ultrasonic Transducer with Single Crystal Piezoelectric Material (압전단결정을 이용한 초음파 탐촉자 모델링 및 해석)

  • In this research, modeling and analysis of an ultrasonic transducer composed of single crystal piezoelectric material(PMN-28PT) are conducted with FEM in reference with that composed of piezoelectric ceramic(PZT-4). Acoustic performances of the ultrasonic transducer are compared with magnitude, phase of impedance and trasmitting voltage response according to the type of piezoelectric materials.

Magnetic-field Sensitivity of PMN-PZT/Ni Magnetoelectric Composite with Piezoelectric Single Crystal Mode Changes (PMN-PZT/Ni 자기-전기 복합체에서 단결정 압전 모드에 따른 자기장 감도 특성)

  • Magnetoelectric (ME) composites were designed using the PMN-PZT single crystal and Ni foils; the properties and magnetic-field sensitivities of ME composites with different piezoelectric vibration modes (i.e., 31, 32, and 36 modes that depend on the crystal orientation of the single crystal) were compared. In the off-resonance condition, the ME coupling properties of the ME composites with the 32 and 36 piezoelectric vibration modes were better than those of the ME composites with the 31 piezoelectric vibration mode. However, in the resonance condition, the ME coupling properties of the ME composites were almost similar, irrespective of the piezoelectric vibration mode. Additionally, in the off-resonance condition (at 1 kHz), the magnetic-field sensitivity of the ME composites with the 36 piezoelectric vibration mode was up to 2 nT and those of the ME composites with the 31 and 32 piezoelectric vibration modes were up to 5 nT. These magnetic-field sensitivities are similar to those offered by conventional high-sensitivity magnetic-field sensors; the potential of the proposed sensor to replace costly and bulky high-sensitivity magnetic field sensors is significant.

  • This paper conducts a vibratory loads reduction analysis of an Advanced Active Trailing-edge Flap (AATF) blade utilizing single crystal piezoelectric actuators. For an AATF blade, a new L-L piezostack actuator using single crystal PMN-PT materials is designed. The AATF blade is designed to have similar characteristics to the Advanced Active Twist Rotor (AATR) blade. The active trailingedge flap is assumed to be 20% of the blade span and 15% of the chord, located at 75% of the blade radius. In order to conduct the vibratory loads reduction analysis of the AATF blade in forward flight, DYMORE, a multi-body dynamics analysis code, is used. The simulation result shows that the hub vibratory loads may be reduced by approximately 89% even with a much lower input-voltage when comparing with the other active rotor systems.

Effect of Internal Bias Field on Poling Behavior in Mn-Doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-29 mol%PbTiO3 Single Crystal

  • Electrical poling is a crucial step to convert ferroelectrics to piezoelectrics. Nevertheless, no systematic investigation on the effect of poling has been reported. Given that the poling involves an alignment of spontaneous polarization, the condition for poling should be different when a material has an internal bias field that influences the domain stability. Here, we present the effect of poling profile on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties in Mn-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-29 mol%PbTiO3 single crystal with an internal bias field. We showed that both the dielectric permittivity and the piezoelectric coefficient were further enhanced when the poling procedure ends with a field application along the opposite direction to the internal bias field. We expect that the current finding would give a clue to understanding the true mechanism for the electrical poling.

Phenomenological Analysis of Piezoelectric Properties in 0.88Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3−0.12PbTiO3 Single Crystals with an Engineering Domain Configuration

  • The piezoelectric properties of tetragonal 0.88Pb$(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3)O_3-0.12PbTiO_3$ single crystals are characterized along the <111> direction, which composed the engineering domain configuration in the tetragonal phase. The <111>-oriented crystal possessed smaller $d_{33}$ values compared to the crystal along the <001> spontaneous polarization direction. Based on phenomenological theory, it is shown that the engineering domain configuration does not enhance the piezoelectric constant in tetragonal 0.88Pb$(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3)O_3-0.12PbTiO_3$ single crystals. In addition, the electrostrictive coefficients of $Q_{12}=-0.03706m^4/C^2,\;Q_{11}=0.10765m^4/C^2,\;and\;Q_{44}=0.02020m^4/C^2$ of tetragonal 0.88PZN-0.12PT single crystals were calculated.

  • The development of telecommunication and information technology requires to develop new piezoelectric materials with small size, low impedance, wide pass band width and high thermal stability of frequency. Langasite (La3Ga5SiO14) single crystal has been researched substitute of quartz and LiNbO3 for the applications of SAW filter, BAW filter and resonator. Its single crystal growth has been carried out by Czochralski Method. So, in order to get single crystal with higher quality, in this study, lnagasite (La3Ga5SiO14) single crystal was grown by using Floating Zone (FZ) method and characterized. For the growth of langasite single crystals, the langasite powder was synthesized at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs and the feed rod was sintered at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs. The growing rate was 1.5mm/h and the rotation speed was 15 rpm for an upper rotation and 13 rpm for a lower rotation. In order to prevent the evaporation of gallium oxide, Ar and O2 gas mixture was flowed. The growth direction was analyzed by Laue back-scattered analysis. The composition of grown crystal was analyzed suing XRD and WDS. The electrical properties of grown crystal at various frequencies and temperature were discussed.

A Single-crystal PMN-29PT Stack Actuator: Fabrication and Performance (단결정 PMN-29PT 적층형 작동기: 제작과 성능)

  • Piezoelectric PMN-29PT single crystal multilayer actuators [100 $mm^2$ in cross section and 22 mm in length] are designed and fabricated by stacking square plates [$10{\times}10{\times}0.5(t)\;mm^3$] of PMN-29PT single crystals having a $d_{33}$ of about 1,500 pC/N. The characteristics of PMN-29PT multilayer actuators are compared with those of P-025.40P multilayer PZT ceramic actuators [490 $mm^2$ in cross section and 60 mm in length] produced by PI in Germany. Even though the total volume of the PMN-29PT single crystal multilayer actuator is only about 7.5% of that of the P-025.40P ceramic multilayer actuator, PMN-29PT single crystal multilayer actuators are expected to show very similar properties to P-025.40P ceramic actuators in terms of static stroke and blocking force. Therefore, on the basis of their smaller mass and volume compared to the conventional PZT ceramic multilayer actuators, piezoelectric PMN-29PT single crystal multilayer actuators have significant potential regarding the development of various high performance actuators for aerospace subsystems.

  • Recently rapid progress of electronic and telecommunication technology requires the development of new piezoelectric materials and cellular communication is more and more used in various fields. Langasite(La3Ga5SiO14) is suitable for new piezoelectric properties. Langastie can be applied as communication devices due to intermediate piezoelectric properties which are similar to those of quartz and LiTaO3 in its acoustic characteristics. So in this study Langastie(La3Ga5SiO14) single crystal with 47 mm in diameter and 25mm in length were sucessfully grown by using self-designed Czochralski system. In addition optimum growth conditions for the piezoelectric applications throughout estimation of crystal quality and frequency characteristics were investigated.

  • Effects of the shape and size of the piezoelectric materials on the performance of tonpilz transducers were studied with a computer simulation using a finite element method (FEM). The diameter and height of the donut-shaped piezoelectric ceramics head mass were changed as variables. And the effect of the stack number was also investigated. Finally, if the piezoelectric ceramics were changed to a piezoelectric single crystal having high piezoelectric constants, how the performances especially, the output power and the TVR transmittance were affected was simulated by FEM. As a result, the output of transducer could be increased to 10 times of PZT-4 with replacement of relaxor single crystal of the same size.

Fabrication of SAW filter using PZT ceramics (PZT압전세라믹을 이용한 SAW필터의 제작)

  • SAW filter has been used in mobile communication device, bandpass filter and resonator for merits )f miniaturization and high reliability. Materials for substrate mainly used single crystal such as LiNbO$_{3}$, LiTaO$_{3}$, ZnO. In this study, it was attempted that LiNbO$_{3}$ was substituted for piezoelectric ceramics(PZT4, PZT5A and PZT8) which had simple fabrication process because fabrication of crystal is difficult and it's cost is high. SAW filters were fabricated by the photolithography on piezoelectric ceramics substrates in order to compare their characteristics with LiNbO$_{3}$'s. The experimental value of center frequency was compared with theoretical one. The average difference of center frequency was 3.7%. PZT8 showed the best bandwidth properties among them. It is considered that PZT8 has higher mechanical quality factor and propagation velocity than others.
