  • Applicability of ammonium molybdophosphate/iron oxides-polyacrylonitrile (AMP/IO-PAN) composites on the removal of radionuclides in the radioactive wastewater generated from nuclear power plants was investigated. The composites were characterized using the following analytical techniques: X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourior transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size analyzer (PSA), nitrogen adsorption-desorption and magnetic property measurement system (MPMS). 10wt% of AMP/IO-PAN composite has a saturation magnetization of 2.038 emu/g. Single-solute sorptions of Co, Sr and Cs onto 10wt% of AMP/IO-PAN composite were investigated. The maximum sorption capacities ($Q^0$) predicted by the Langmuir model on 10wt% of AMP/IO-PAN composite were 0.097, 0.086 and 0.66 mmol/g for Co, Sr and Cs, respectively. The maximum sorption capacities ($Q^0$) of Cs predicted by Langmuir model on 0, 10, 20 and 30wt% of AMP/IO-PAN composites were 0.702, 0.655, 0.602 and 0.559 mmol/g, respectively. The maximum sorption capacities ($Q^0$) of Cs decreased with increasing the iron oxide content in the AMP/IO-PAN composites.

  • In coastal areas that are affected by continuous, seasonal or occasional pollution sources, bivalves accumulate biological contaminants such as pathogenic bacteria. We investigated the effect of natural seawater relaying and electrolyzed seawater depuration on the bacteriological quality of artificially contaminated oysters Crassostrea gigas and short-necked clams Ruditapes philippinarum to suggest an alternative method of shellfish sanitation control. When artificially contaminated oysters and short-necked clams (fecal coliform level 1,700 MPN/100 g) were relayed into a sea area of safe bacteriological water quality, the fecal coliform level dropped to below 110 MPN/100 g after 1 day. The bacteriological quality of oysters and short-necked clams that are contaminated at a fecal coliform level of 1,700 MPN/100 g could be improved, and become appropriate for raw consumption by a single day relay under proper environmental conditions. When artificially contaminated oysters (fecal coliform level 330 MPN/100 g) were depurated with electrolyzed seawater, 94% of fecal coliform was eliminated after 12 h and fecal coliform was undetectable after 24 h. After 24 h depuration with electrolyzed seawater, the fecal coliform level of short-necked clams with initial fecal coliform of 2,400 MPN/100 g was below 20 MPN/100 g. However, the fecal coliform level of short-necked clams with initial fecal coliform of 17,000 MPN/100 g was relatively high, at 790 MPN/100 g, even after 24 h of depuration with electrolyzed seawater, because of the repeated cycle of excretion and accumulation of fecal coliform in shellfish tissue under the closed depuration environment. Such natural seawater relaying and electrolyzed seawater depuration can be restrictively applied to improve or secure the bacteriological quality of oysters and short-necked clams in accordance with safety levels for bivalves for raw consumption.

  • The incentive and reasons to publish FIDIC Conditions of Contract for Design, Build and Operate Projects(DBO Form) are manifold. It is partly a response to the increasing need for sophisticated project delivery methods in both the public and private sectors and the already widespread use of the FIDIC Yellow Book with operation and maintenance obligations and partly a response to the challenge to decrease maintenance cost to a minimum by means of a new procurement route. As a result, FIDIC has developed a new model form to meet this market place requirement. On the other hand, FIDIC did not simply adapt the Yellow Book but has developed a new form from it, whilst preserving the style of the already known FIDIC Forms and maintaining the wording where it was not necessary to change it for the purposes of a DBO Form. Moreover DBO Form fills up supposed gaps in other FIDIC Forms and ameliorates the claim management and dispute management framework. FIDIC DBO approach may be shortly summarized as follows. First, DBO Form provides for single project responsibility. Second, DBO Form has the clear objective of ensuring the use of a most reliable and efficient technology at the lowest life-cycle cost. Third, DBO Form is intended to operate as an effective quality increase in the design and construction of projects. Fourth, DBO Form is intended to provide significant benefits with regard to system integration and reduction of risks. Fifth, DBO Form accelerates and enhances completion schedule compliance. Sixth, DBO takes care of all three supporting pillars of sustainability(including economical, environmental and social elements). DBO Form is obviously a good starting point for negotiations and the preparation of calls for tenders, thus saving the parties time and money. However, existing cultural and legal differences, particular local conditions and the particular needs of some branches of the industry may require the form to be adapted according to the particular needs of a project. And Civil law practitioners are strongly recommended to verify carefully the underlying legal concepts and background of each clause of the General Conditions in order to avoid unnecessary and sometimes unnatural changes and amendments being made. Note that when preparing the Particular Conditions ensure that terminology is consistent and that existing inherent concepts should not be ignored.

  • The construction of a light rail transit (LRT) system is a large and complex infrastructure project involving hundreds of billions of won in construction costs for a single route, and it is very important to carry out such a project from a life-cycle perspective because of its long-term operation. Systems engineering is a means and methodology to successfully implement customers' needs, and it is useful in large projects such as light rail transit. An application model called Systems Engineering for Light Rail Transit (SELRT) was developed to support systems engineering activities in light rail transit projects. In order to utilize SELRT, it is necessary to ensure that system requirements are met. As such, in this paper, we present a verification procedure and architecture based on a systems engineering-based methodology, thereby identifying the system requirements and deriving the verification requirements to confirm the SELRT model for the proposed method. The results show that the traceability of the system requirements and verification requirements, the verification method for each requirement, and the demonstration results for computerized tools are mutually connected, and that the initial requirements are clearly implemented in the SELRT. The proposed method is valid for verifying the SELRT, which can also be utilized in a LRT project.

  • Developed countries, especially in road construction and management fields, introduce new road porjects such as National Scenic Byways Program(NSBP program) in USA and the Eco-road project in Japan. This study develops a conceptual model for deploying new road projects in Korea. The four step approach is suggested to create new road projects, including foundation of an act based on the existing Road Act, creation of new road project ideas, development of evaluation process and guidelines, and enhancement of an administrative scheme. To create new road projects, three different ways are devised; (1) designation of national roads having uniqueness in overall spectrum, (2) designation of roads having intrinsic values in a different aspect, (3) designation of single structures of engineering outcomes such as bridges, tunnels, new design techniques, considerable Value Engineering output, and well analyzed Life Cycle Cost Analysis practices. For the evaluation process, NSBP program of USA and/or Sustainable City Award program of Korea would be recommended. An administrative scheme and integrated funding process for the new road projects are also suggested based on evaluation of tasks of each team or division of Korea Ministry of Construction and Transportation.

  • In this paper, we proposed the improvements for performance test and surveying equipment regulations, standards, methods and procedures, depending on the need of improving the legal system for surveying equipment in a diverse and sophisticated surveying industry. This research was performed first investigating the existing legal systems(Act on the establishment and management of spatial data, Framework act on national standards, ISO 17123, JIS B 7912) with respect to the surveying equipment performance testing and the research for IOS and KOLAS suggested the improvements on the application for the surveying equipment performance testing standard. More exactly, first, two years were presented for the surveying equipment performance testing cycle considering the precise accuracy of the instrument stability, purpose and frequency of use, etc. Second, the abolition of the measurement distance by grade and the upward or cross-grade adjustment of the single prism standards about the light wave rangefinder and total station were suggested for the improvement on survey equipment performance criteria. Third, since the main function of total station is focused on a three-dimensional coordinate measurement due to the improvement of surveying equipment performance testing, it was proposed to use the precision(repeatability) of the coordinate measuring method as an evaluation method.

  • Recently the application of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist to superovulation in previous poor responders has resulted in the improved outcomes after in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcome. However, poor responders with poor estradiol $(E_2)$ rise or single dominant follicle are a particularly challenging group. Recent reports have also shown that patients with higher basal serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) level, result in poorer ovarian response and lower pregnancy rate. Analysis of the differences of superovulation outcomes according to the different protocols of GnRH agonist, long (L, n = 18) and short (S, n = 16) protocols, in patients with high basal FSH levels (>20mIU/ml) were undertaken at Seoul National University Hospital from June to October 1990. The administration of GnRH agonist was begun on day 21 of the cycle in long protocol, and on day 2 in short protocol. Ages of patients and husbands, basal FSH and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels and FSH/LH ratio did not differ significantly. Types and causes of infertility were evenly distributed. Whereas the duration of stimulation and the amounts of gonadotropins administered were significantly reduced in short protocol, the numbers of oocytes retrieved and cleaved, the cleavage rate and the number of embryos transferred were higher in long protocol without statistical signifieance. The pregnancy rate per ET was 16.7% (2/12) in short protocol, and 17.6% (3/17) in long protocol. These data suggest that both protocols result in the similar superovulation outcomes in patients with higher basal serum FSH levels.

  • Objective: We investigated the clinical characteristics of men with testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)-induced hypogonadism and its effect on assisted reproductive technology (ART) in infertile couples. Methods: This study examined the records of 20 consecutive male patients diagnosed with azoospermia or severe oligozoospermia (< 5 × 106/mL) who visited a single infertility center from January 2008 to July 2018. All patients were treated at a primary clinic for erectile dysfunction or androgen deficiency symptoms combined with low serum testosterone. All men received a phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor and TRT with testosterone undecanoate (Nebido®) or testosterone enanthate (Jenasteron®). Patients older than 50 years or with a chronic medical disease such as diabetes were excluded. Results: The mean age of patients was 37 years and the mean duration of infertility was 16.3 ± 11.6 months. At the initial presentation, eight patients had azoospermia, nine had cryptozoospermia, and three had severe oligozoospermia. Serum follicle-stimulating hormone levels were below 1.0 mIU/mL in most patients. Three ongoing ART programs with female factor infertility were cancelled due to male spermatogenic dysfunction; two of these men had normal semen parameters in the previous cycle. After withholding TRT, serum hormone levels and sperm concentrations returned to normal range after a median duration of 8 months. Conclusion: TRT with high-dose testosterone can cause spermatogenic dysfunction due to suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis, with adverse effects on infertility treatment programs. TRT is therefore contraindicated for infertile couples attempting to conceive, and the patient's desire for fertility must be considered before initiation of TRT in a hypogonadal man.

  • This paper decomposes and estimates trend/cyclical components of some key macro variables-GDP, inflation, and interest rate, using a simple DSGE model along with flexible trend specification. The extracted cyclical components of output and interest rate are similar to HP-filtered counterparts, despite some differences in persistence and volatility, while inflation resembles that from BK filtering. This implies that the usual practice of applying a single filtering method to the data of interest may be problematic. When the baseline model is extended to incorporate consumption habit and price indexation, habit turns out to be important in explaining the persistence of business cycles. Comparison of several alternative models shows that the usual practice of estimation of DSGE model using filtered data leads to biased results. Finally, various sensitivity analyses illustrate that (1) allowing for correlation between structural cyclical shocks and trend shocks and (2) including irregular components (in inflation rate) may deliver interesting/important implication for gap estimates.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the potential adverse effect of spontaneously decreasing serum estradiol (SE) levels on in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes. Methods: This retrospective single-subject study analyzed IVF cycles conducted at a hospital IVF unit between 2010 and 2017. Overall, 2,417 cycles were analyzed. Only cycles with spontaneously decreasing SE before human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) triggering were included. Each patient served as her own control, and subsequent cycles were analyzed for recurrent SE decreases. The main outcome was the number of oocytes retrieved. Results: Cycle characteristics were similar between the study (SE decrease) and control groups, with the exception of the median SE on the day of hCG triggering (899.7 pg/mL; interquartile range [IQR], 193-2,116 pg/mL vs. 1,566.8 pg/mL; IQR, 249-2,970 pg/mL; p< 0.001). The study group, relative to the control group, had significantly fewer total oocytes (5 [IQR, 2-9] vs. 7 [IQR, 3-11]; p= 0.002) and significantly fewer metaphase II (MII) oocytes (3 [IQR, 1-6] vs. 4 [IQR, 2-8]; p= 0.001) retrieved. The study group had fewer cleavage-stage embryos than the control cycles (3 [IQR, 1-6] vs. 4 [IQR, 2-7]; p= 0.012). Compared to cycles with a ≤ 20% SE decrease, cycles with a > 20% decrease had significantly fewer total and MII oocytes retrieved. SE decrease recurred in 12% of patients. Conclusion: A spontaneous decrease in SE levels adversely affected IVF outcomes, with a linear correlation between the percentage decrease and the number of oocytes retrieved. SE decrease can repeat in later cycles.
