  • This study presents the integrated modeling approach to simulate the proton exchange membrane [PEM] fuel cell system for vehicle application. The fuel cell system consisting of stack and balance of plant (BOP) was simulated with MATLAB/Simulink environment to estimate the maximum system power and investigate the effect of BOP component sizing on system performance and efficiency. The PEM fuel cell stack model was established by using a semi-empirical modeling. To maximize the net efficiency of fuel cell system, multi-variable optimization code was adopted. Using this method, the optimized operating values were obtained according to various system net power levels. The fuel cell model established was co-linked to AVL CRUISE, a vehicle simulation package. Through the vehicle simulation software, the fuel economy of fuel cell powered electric vehicle for two types of driving cycles was presented and compared. It is expected that this study can be effectively employed in the basic BOP component sizing and in establishing system operation map with respect to net power level of fuel cell system.

  • We define the mobile robot navigation problem as an optimization problem to minimize the cost function with the pose error between the goal position and the position of a mobile robot. Using Gauss-Newton method for the optimization, the optimal speeds of the left and right wheels can be found as the solution of the optimization problem. Especially, the rotational speed of wheels of a mobile robot can be directly related to the overall speed of a mobile robot using the Jacobian derived from the kinematic model. When the robot detects the obstacle using sensors, the sub-goal switching method is adopted for the efficient obstacle avoidance during the navigation. The performance was evaluated using the simulation and the simulation results show the validity of the proposed method.

  • This paper addresses a novel optimization technique based on molecular dynamics simulation which has been utilized for physical model simulation at various disciplines. In this study, objective functions are considered to be potential functions, which depict molecular interactions. Comparisons of typical optimization method such as the steepest descent and the present method for several test functions are made. The present method shows applicability and stability in finding a global optimum.

  • In this paper, optimized operating parameters were found using multi-dimensional engine simulation software (KIVA-3V) and micro-genetic algorithm for heavy duty diesel engine. The engine operating condition considered was at 1,737 rev/min and 57 % load. Engine simulation model was validated using an engine equipped with a high pressure electronic unit injector (HEUI) system. Three important parameters were used for the optimization - boost pressure, EGR rate and start of injection timing. Numerical optimization identified HCCI-like combustion characteristics showing significant improvements for the soot and $NO_X$ emissions. The optimized soot and $NO_X$ emissions were reduced to 0.005 g/kW-hr and 1.33 g/kW-hr, respectively. Moreover, the optimum results met EPA 2007 mandates at the operating point considered.

  • Automated parking systems, which automatically park and retrieve vehicles, have been steadily replacing conventional parking systems. The spiral parking system is a type of automated parking systems that has cylindrical parking tower. We develop an economic design model of spiral parking system based on a recursive optimization and simulation procedure in which the dynamic nature of the parking system can be integrated into the mathematical programming model. The optimal values of design parameters are found that gives the minimum total cost while complying with the desired performance of the system.

  • Approximate optimization has become popular in engineering field such as MDO and Crash analysis which is time consuming. To accomplish efficient approximate optimization, accuracy of approximate model is very important. As surrogate model, Kriging have been widely used approximating highly nonlinear system . Because Kriging employs interpolation method, it is adequate for deterministic computer simulation. Because there are no random errors and measurement errors in deterministic computer simulation, instead of classical DOE ,space filling experiment design which fills uniformly design space should be applied. In this work, various space filling designs such as maximin distance design, maximum entropy design are reviewed. And new design improving maximum entropy design is suggested and compared.

  • As the industrial environment becomes more competitive, supply chain management (SCM) has become recognized as a major strategy in the business world. Some of current researches are categorized into review papers, deterministic models, stochastic models, simulation models and discussed in this paper. A hybrid approach combining analytic model and simulation model and the simulation optimization method are proposed as future research areas with other analytical subjects.

  • The phenomenon of a continuous Steel-making process was studied with a set of collected equilibrium data for the steel-oxidation reactions. Mass and Heat balances were also established. Mass transfer constants which are physically unmeasurable but escential for the simulation study in the steel-making process were calculated from the experimental data using an optimization technique. Based on these data various operating conditions and process characteristics were examined.

  • In this paper, we consider a channel ordering problem that seeks to minimize the total interference in mobile radio networks. If a base station receives connection request from a mobile user, one of the empty channels that are fixed to the base station is assigned to the mobile user. Among several channels available, we can choose one that seems to make least interference with other channels assigned to adjacent base stations. However, a pair of channels that are not separated enough do not generate interference if both of them are not simultaneously used by mobile users. That is, interference between channels may vary depending on the channel assignment sequence for each base station and on the distribution of mobile users. To find a channel assignment sequence that seems to generate minimum interference, we develop an optimization model considering various scenarios of mobile user distribution. Simulation results show that channel assignment sequence determined by the scenario based optimization model significantly reduces the interference provided that scenarios and interference costs are properly generated.
