In the current very deep submicron technology era, fault tolerant mechanisms perform an essential function to cope with the effects of soft errors. To evaluate the effectiveness of the fault tolerant mechanism, reliability engineers use simulated fault injections using either saboteur modules or mutants in the simulation model. However, the two methods suffer from both inefficiency in the simulation mechanism and difficulties with the experimental setups. To overcome these inefficiencies, we propose the Verilog-based simulated fault injection (VFI) technique. VFI has the following advantages. First, modification of the design model is unnecessary. Second, the fault injection simulation procedure is simple and efficient. Third, various types of fault injection experiments can be performed. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, we developed a VFI environment using the ICARUS Verilog Simulator. From the experimental results, we were able to qualitatively evaluate the reliability of the target simulation models and to assess the effectiveness of the employed fault-tolerance mechanisms.
Simulated fault injection (SFI) is widely used to assess the effectiveness of fault tolerance mechanisms in safety-critical embedded systems (SCESs) because of its advantages such as controllability and observability. However, the long test time of SFI due to the large number of test cases and the complex simulation models of modern SCESs has been identified as a limiting factor. We present a method that can accelerate an SFI tool using a checkpoint forwarding (CF) technique. To evaluate the performance of CF-based SFI (CF-SFI), we have developed a CF mechanism using Verilog fault-injection tools and two systems under test (SUT): a single-core-based co-simulation model and a triple modular redundant co-simulation model. Both systems use the Verilog simulation model of the OpenRISC 1200 processor and can execute the embedded benchmarks from MiBench. We investigate the effectiveness of the CF mechanism and evaluate the two SUTs by measuring the test time as well as the failure rates. Compared to the SFI with no CF mechanism, the proposed CF-SFI approach reduces the test time of the two SUTs by 29%-45%.
This study presents an application of hydro-mechanical coupled Particle Flow Code 3D (PFC3D) to simulation of fluid injection induced fault slip experiment conducted in Mont Terri Switzerland as a part of a task in an international research project DECOVALEX-2019. We also aimed as identifying the current limitations of the modelling method and issues for further development. A fluid flow algorithm was developed and implemented in a 3D pore-pipe network model in a 3D bonded particle assembly using PFC3D v5, and was applied to Mont Terri Step 2 minor fault activation experiment. The simulated results showed that the injected fluid migrates through the permeable fault zone and induces fault deformation, demonstrating a full hydro-mechanical coupled behavior. The simulated results were, however, partially matching with the field measurement. The simulated pressure build-up at the monitoring location showed linear and progressive increase, whereas the field measurement showed an abrupt increase associated with the fault slip We conclude that such difference between the modelling and the field test is due to the structure of the fault in the model which was represented as a combination of damage zone and core fractures. The modelled fault is likely larger in size than the real fault in Mont Terri site. Therefore, the modelled fault allows several path ways of fluid flow from the injection location to the pressure monitoring location, leading to smooth pressure build-up at the monitoring location while the injection pressure increases, and an early start of pressure decay even before the injection pressure reaches the maximum. We also conclude that the clay filling in the real fault could have acted as a fluid barrier which may have resulted in formation of fluid over-pressurization locally in the fault. Unlike the pressure result, the simulated fault deformations were matching with the field measurements. A better way of modelling a heterogeneous clay-filled fault structure with a narrow zone should be studied further to improve the applicability of the modelling method to fluid injection induced fault activation.
This paper presents the design of self-checking comparator using the time diversity and the application to 8 bit CPU for the implementation of fault tolerant computer system. this self-checking comparator was designed with the different time Points in which temporary faults were raised by electrical noise between duplicated functional blocks. also this self-checking comparator was simulated in the method of the fault injection using 4 bit shift register counter. we designed the duplicated Emotional block and the self-checking comparator in the single chip using the Altera EPLD and could verify the reliability and the fault detection coverage through the modeling of temporary faults ,especially intermittent faults. at the results of this research, the reliability and the fault detection coverage were implemented through the self-checking comparator using the time diversity.

We simulated the fault reactivation experiment conducted at 'Main Fault' intersecting the low permeability clay formations of Mont Terri Underground Research Laboratory in Switzerland using TOUGH-FLAC simulator. The fluid flow along a fault was modelled with solid elements and governed by Darcy's law with the cubic law in TOUGH2, whereas the mechanical behavior of a single fault was represented by creating interface elements between two separating rock blocks in FLAC3D. We formulate the hydro-mechanical coupling relation of hydraulic aperture to consider the elastic fracture opening and failure-induced dilation for reproducing the abrupt changes in injection flow rate and monitoring pressure at fracture opening pressure. A parametric study was conducted to examine the effects of in-situ stress condition and fault deformation and strength parameters and to find the optimal parameter set to reproduce the field observations. In the best matching simulation, the fracture opening pressure and variations of injection flow rate and monitoring pressure showed good agreement with field experiment results, which suggests the capability of the numerical model to reasonably capture the fracture opening and propagation process. The model overestimated the fault displacement in shear direction and the range of reactivated zone, which was attributed to the progressive shear failures along the fault at high injection pressure. In the field experiment results, however, fracture tensile opening seems the dominant mechanism affecting the hydraulic aperture increase.
Geologic sequestration technologies such as CCS (carbon capture and storage), EGS (enhanced geothermal systems), and EOR (enhanced oil recovery) have been widely implemented in recent years, prompting evaluation of the mechanical stability of storage sites. As fluid injection can stimulate mechanical instability in storage layers by perturbing the stress state and pore pressure, poroelastic models considering various injection scenarios are required. In this study, we calculate the pore pressure, stress distribution, and vertical displacement along a surface using commercial finite element software (COMSOL); fault slips are subsequently simulated using PyLith, an open-source finite element software. The displacement fields, are obtained from PyLith is transferred back to COMSOL to determine changes in coseismic stresses and surface displacements. Our sequential use of COMSOL-PyLith-COMSOL for poroelastic modeling of fluid-injection and induced-earthquakes reveals large variations of pore pressure, vertical displacement, and Coulomb failure stress change during injection periods. On the other hand, the residual stress diffuses into the remote field after injection stops. This flow pattern suggests the necessity of numerical modeling and long-term monitoring, even after injection has stopped. We found that the time at which the Coulomb failure stress reaches the critical point greatly varies with the hydraulic and poroelastic properties (e.g., permeability and Biot-Willis coefficient) of the fault and injection layer. We suggest that an understanding of the detailed physical properties of the surrounding layer is important in selecting the injection site. Our numerical results showing the surface displacement and deviatoric stress distribution with different amounts of fault slip highlight the need to test more variable fault slip scenarios.

A Steer-by-Wire system has so many advantages comparing with conventional mechanical steering system that it is expected to take key role in future environment friendly vehicle and intelligent transportation system. The mechanical connection between the hand wheel and the front axle will become obsolete. SBW system provides many benefits in terms of functionality, and at the same time present significant challenges - fault tolerant, fail safety - too. In this paper, failure analysis of SBW system will be performed and than sensor fusion technique will be proposed for fail safety of SBW system. A sensor fusion logic of steering angle sensor by using steering angle sensor, torque sensor and rack position sensor will be developed and simulated by fault injection simulation.
LBlock is a 64-bit ultra-light block cipher suitable for the constrained environments such as wireless sensor network environments. In this paper, we propose a differential fault analysis on LBlock. Based on a random nibble fault model, our attack can recover the secret key of LBlock by using the exhaustive search of $2^{25}$ and five random nibble fault injection on average. It can be simulated on a general PC within a few seconds. This result is superior to known differential fault analytic result on LBlock.

The smart air condition system is superior to conventional air condition system in the aspect of control accuracy, environmental preservation and it is foundation for intelligent vehicle such as electric vehicle, fuel cell vehicle. In this paper, failure analyses of smart air condition system will be performed and then sensor fusion technique will be proposed for fail safety of smart air condition system. A sensor fusion logic of air condition system by using CO sensor, $CO_2$ sensor and VOC, $NO_x$ sensor will be developed and simulated by fault injection simulation. The fusion technology of smart air condition system is generated in an experiment and a performance analysis is conducted with fusion algorithms. The proposed algorithm adds the error characteristic of each sensor as a conditional probability value, and ensures greater accuracy by performing the track fusion with the sensors with the most reliable performance.
In this paper, the method is used that each system isolates the part in which faults are occurred in case of fault occurrence since total system is designed in the type of hot standby sparing system construction and self-checking circuit in each system is attached to the memory being of the high failure rate in common communication system. Thus reliability and availability in system are improved. In this thesis, self-checking circuit was designed using 2 out of 6 code and didn't have any effect to the system operation. For the purpose of verification, each system attached with self-checking circuit was simulated through fault injection arid the continuity of each system in hot standby sparing system was tested in case that the system was switched when faults in the system were occurred.
