Biomechanical Comparison of Inter-fragmentary Compression Pressures : Lag Screw versus Herbert Screw for Anterior Odontoid Screw Fixation

  • Objective : The purpose of the present study was to compare inter-fragmentary compression pressures after fixation of a simulated type II odontoid fracture with the headless compression Herbert screw and a half threaded cannulated lag screw. Methods : We compared inter-fragmentary compression pressures between 40- and 45-mm long 4.5-mm Herbert screws (n=8 and n=9, respectively) and 40- and 45-mm long 4.0-mm cannulated lag screws (n=7 and n=10, respectively) after insertion into rigid polyurethane foam test blocks (Sawbones, Vashon, WA, USA). A washer load cell was placed between the two segments of test blocks to measure the compression force. Because the total length of each foam block was 42 mm, the 40-mm screws were embedded in the cancellous foam, while the 45-mm screws penetrated the denser cortical foam at the bottom. This enabled us to compare inter-fragmentary compression pressures as they are affected by the penetration of the apical dens tip by the screws. Results : The mean compression pressures of the 40- and 45-mm long cannulated lag screws were $50.48{\pm}1.20N$ and $53.88{\pm}1.02N$, respectively, which was not statistically significant (p=0.0551). The mean compression pressures of the 40-mm long Herbert screw was $52.82{\pm}2.17N$, and was not statistically significant compared with the 40-mm long cannulated lag screw (p=0.3679). However, 45-mm Herbert screw had significantly higher mean compression pressure ($60.68{\pm}2.03N$) than both the 45-mm cannulated lag screw and the 40-mm Herbert screw (p=0.0049 and p=0.0246, respectively). Conclusion : Our results showed that inter-fragmentary compression pressures of the Herbert screw were significantly increased when the screw tip penetrated the opposite dens cortical foam. This can support the generally recommended surgical technique that, in order to facilitate maximal reduction of the fracture gap using anterior odontoid screws, it is essential to penetrate the apical dens tip with the screw.

The Properties of a Nonlinear Direct Spectrum Method for Estimating the Seismic Performance (내진성능평가를 위한 비선형 직접스펙트럼법의 특성)

  • It has been recognized that the damage control must become a more explicit design consideration. In an effort to develop design methods based on performance it is clear that the evaluation of the nonlinear response is required. The methods available to the design engineer today are nonlinear time history analyses, monotonic static nonlinear analyses, or equivalent static analyses with simulated nonlinear influences. Some building codes propose the capacity spectrum method based on the nonlinear static analysis(pushover analysis) to determine the earthquake-induced demand given by the structure pushover curve. These procedures are conceptually simple but iterative and time consuming with some errors. This paper presents a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural initial elastic period and yield strength from the pushover analysis, especially for MDF(multi degree of freedom) systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the accuracy and confidence of this method from a point of view of various earthquakes and unloading stiffness degradation parameters. The conclusions of this study are as follows; 1) NDSM is considered as practical method because the peak deformations of nonlinear system of MDF by NDSM are almost equal to the results of nonlinear time history analysis(NTHA) for various ground motions. 2) When the results of NDSM are compared with those of NTHA. mean of errors is the smallest in case of post-yielding stiffness factor 0.1, static force by MAD(modal adaptive distribution) and unloading stiffness degradation factor 0.2~0.3.

Calculation of Concrete Shielding Wall Thickness for 450 kVp X-ray Tube with MCNP Simulation and Result Comparison with Half Value Layer Method Calculation (MCNP 시뮬레이션을 통한 450 kVp 엑스레이 튜브의 콘크리트 차폐벽 두께 계산 및 반가층 방법을 이용한 계산과의 결과 비교)

  • Radiation generating devices must be properly shielded for their safe application. Although institutes such as US National Bureau of Standards and National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) have provided guidelines for shielding X-ray tube of various purposes, industry people tend to rely on 'Half Value Layer (HVL) method' which requires relatively simple calculation compared to the case of those guidelines. The method is based on the fact that the intensity, dose, and air kerma of narrow beam incident on shielding wall decreases by about half as the beam penetrates the HVL thickness of the wall. One can adjust shielding wall thickness to satisfy outside wall dose or air kerma requirements with this calculation. However, this may not always be the case because 1) The strict definition of HVL deals with only Intensity, 2) The situation is different when the beam is not 'narrow'; the beam quality inside the wall is distorted and related changes on outside wall dose or air kerma such as buildup effect occurs. Therefore, sometimes more careful research should be done in order to verify the effect of shielding specific radiation generating device. High energy X-ray tubes which is operated at the voltage above 400 kV that are used for 'heavy' nondestructive inspection is an example. People have less experience in running and shielding such device than in the case of widely-used low energy X-ray tubes operated at the voltage below 300 kV. In this study, Air Kerma value per week, outside concrete shielding wall of various thickness surrounding 450 kVp X-ray tube were calculated using MCNP simulation with the aid of Geometry Splitting method which is a famous Variance Reduction technique. The comparison between simulated result, HVL method result, and NCRP Report 147 safety goal $0.02mGy\;wk^{-1}$ on Air Kerma for the place where the public are free to pass showed that concrete wall of thickness 80 cm is needed to achieve the safety goal. Essentially same result was obtained from the application of HVL method except that it suggest the need of additional 5 cm concrete wall thickness. Therefore, employing the result from HVL method calculation as an conservative upper limit of concrete shielding wall thickness was found to be useful; It would be easy, economic, and reasonable way to set shielding wall thickness.

Automatic Traffic Data Collection Using Simulated Satellite Imagery (인공위성영상을 이용한 교통량측량 자동화)

  • The fact that the demands on traffic data collection are imposed by economic and safety considerations raisese the question of the potential for complementing existing traffic data collection programs with satellite data. Evaluating and monitoring traffic characteristics is becoming increasingly important as worsening congestion, declining economic situations, and increasing environmental sensitivies are forcing the government and municipalities to make better use of existing roadway capacities. The present system of using automatic counters at selected points on highways works well from a temporal point of view (i.e., during a specific period of time at one location). However, the present system does not cover the spatial aspects of the entire road system (i.e., for every location during specific periods of time); the counters are employed only at points and only on selected highways. This lack of spatial coverage is due, in part, to the cost of the automatic counters systems (fixed procurement and maintenance costs) and of the personal required to deploy them. The current procedure is believed to work fairly well in the aggregate mode, at the macro level. However, at micro level, the numbers are more suspect. In addition, the statistics only work when assuming a certain homogenity among characteristics of highways in the same class, an assumption that is impossible to test whn little or no data is gathered on many of the highways for a given class. In this paper, a remote sensing system as complement of the existing system is considered and implemented. Since satellite imagery with high resolution is not available, digitized panchromatic imagery acquired from an aircraft platform is utilized for initial test of the feasibility and performance capability of remote sensing data. Different levels of imagery resolutions are evaluated in an attempt to determine what vehicle types could be classified and counted against a background of pavement types, which might be expected in panchromatic satellite imagery. The results of a systematic study with three different levels of resolutions (1m, 2m and 4m) show that the panchromat ic reflectances of vehicles and pavements would be distributed so similarly that it would be difficult to classify systematically and analytically remotely sensing vehicles on pavement within panchromatic range. Anaysis of the aerial photographs show that the shadows of the vehicles could be a cue for vehicle detection.

Study on the Correlation between the Growth Characteristics of Wild-simulated Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) and Soil Bacterial Community of Cultivation Area (산양삼 생육특성과 재배지 토양세균군집 간의 상관관계 연구)

  • 본 연구는 전국 임의의 산양삼 재배지를 선정하여 재배지 내의 토양 특성 및 토양세균군집을 분석하고, 토양 특성, 세균군집 및 산양삼 생육특성 간의 상관관계를 구명하기 위하여 수행되었다. 토양 이화학성 분석은 농촌진흥청의 종합분석실 매뉴얼에 따라 분석하였고, 토양세균군집 분석은 pyrosequencing analysis (Illumina platform)를 이용하였다. 토양세균군집과 생육특성 간의 상관관계는 Spearman's rank correlation을 이용하여 분석하였다. 전국 8개 산양삼 재배지로부터 분리한 토양세균군집은 2개의 cluster로 군집화를 이루는 것을 확인하였다. 모든 토양 샘플에서 Proteobacteria와 Alphaproteobacteria가 각각 평균 상대적 빈도수가 35.4%, 24.4%로 우점종으로 나타났다. 나타났다. 두 개의 cluster 간 토양세균군집의 상대적 빈도수를 비교 분석한 결과, 먼저 Proteobacteria (p = 0.03), Actinobacteria (p = 0.02), Ahlpaproteobacteria (p = 0.029), Betaproteobacteria (p = 0.021)는 cluster 1에서 cluster 2에 비해 상대적 빈도수가 유의적으로 높았고, Fimicutes (p = 0.004), Cyanobacteria (p = 0.004), Acidobacteriia (p = 0.041), Ktedonobacteria (p = 0.019), Gammaproteobacteria (p = 0.034), Bacilli (p = 0.009)은 cluster 2에서 유의적으로 상대적 빈도수가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 토양세균군집 cluster 간 산양삼의 생육특성을 비교 분석한 결과, cluster 2 재배지에서 수집한 산양삼 시료의 지하부 생중량은 cluster 1 재배지에서 수집한 산양삼 시료에 비해 cluster 2에서 유의적 (p = 0.04)으로 높았다. 산양삼 생육특성과 토양세균군집 간의 상관관계를 분석한 결과, 산양삼의 생육은 토양 pH가 낮고 Acidobacteria의 상대적 빈도수가 높은 토양에서 증가하였으며, Acidobacteriia와 Koribacteraceae의 상대적 빈도수는 산양삼의 생육과 유의적인 정의 상관관계를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구 결과는 토양미생물군집과 산양삼 생육 간의 상관관계를 구명하는 중요한 자료가 될 것으로 생각되고, 나아가 산양삼 재배적지를 선정하는데 있어 보다 명확한 정보를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

The Present Status and Development Plan in the Field of Climate Change Science in Korea analyzed by the IPCC-IV Reports (IPCC-IV 국가 보고서 분석에 의한 한국의 기후변화과학 분야의 현황과 발전방향)

  • The recent global warming may be estimated to give lots of impacts to the human society and biosphere of influencing climate change included by the natural climate variations through the human activity which can directly and/or indirectly play a major role of total atmospheric composition overall. Therefore it currently appears evidences such as hot wave, typhoon, and biosphere disturbance, etc. over the several regions to be influenced by global warming due to increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere through inducing forest destruction, fossil fuel combustion, greenhouse gases emission, etc. since industrial revolution era. Through the working group report of IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) for climate change was analyzed by the individual country's current status and figure out the important issues and problems related to the future trend of climate change science with advanced countries preparedness and research, In this study, the first working group report of IPCC focuses on those aspects of the current understanding of the physical science of climate change that are judged to be most relevant to policymakers. As this report was assessed and analyzed by including the progress of climate change science, the role of climate models and evolution in the treatment of uncertainties. This consists of the changes in atmospheric constituents(both aerosols and gases) that affect the radiative energy balance in the atmosphere and determine the Earth's climate, considering the interaction between biogeochemical cycles that affect atmospheric constituents and climate change, including aerosol/cloud interactions, the extensive range of observations snow available for the atmosphere and surface, for snow, ice, and frozen ground and for the oceans, respectively and changes in sea level, the paleoclimate perspective and assessment of evidence for past climate change and the extension, the ways in which physical processes are simulated in climate models and the evaluation of models against observed climate, the development plans and methods of improving expert and building manpower urgently and R&D fund expansion in detail for climate change science in Korea will be proposed.

Discrete element simulations of continental collision in Asia (아시아 대륙충돌의 개별요소 시뮬레이션)

  • Analogue physical modelling using granular materials (i.e., sandbox experiments) has been applied with great success to a number of geological problems at various scales. Such physical experiments can also be simulated numerically with the Discrete Element Method (DEM). In this study, we apply the DEM simulation to the collision between the Indian subcontinent and the Eurasian Plate, one of the most significant current tectonic processes in the Earth. DEM simulation has been applied to various kinds of dynamic modelling, not only in structural geology but also in soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and the like. As the target of the investigation is assumed to be an assembly of many tiny particles, DEM simulation makes it possible to treat an object with large and discontinuous deformations. However, in DEM simulations, we often encounter difficulties when we examine the validity of the input parameters, since little is known about the relationship between the input parameters for each particle and the properties of the whole assembly. Therefore, in our previous studies (Yamada et al.,2002a,2002b,2002c), we were obliged to tune the input parameters by trial and error. To overcome these difficulties, we introduce a numerical biaxial test with the DEM simulation. Using the results of this numerical test, we examine the validity of the input parameters used in the collision model. The resulting collision model is quite similar to the real deformation observed in eastern Asia, and compares well with GPS data and in-situ stress data in eastern Asia.

Flow blockage analysis for fuel assembly in a lead-based fast reactor

  • Flow blockage of the fuel assembly in the lead-based fast reactor (LFR) may produce critical local spots, which will result in cladding failure and threaten reactor safety. In this study, the flow blockage characteristics were analyzed with the sub-channel analysis method, and the circumferentially-varied method was employed for considering the non-uniform distribution of circumferential temperature. The developed sub-channel analysis code SACOS-PB was validated by a heat transfer experiment in a blocked 19-rod bundle cooled by lead-bismuth eutectic. The deviations between the predicted coolant temperature and experimental values are within ±5%, including small and large flow blockage scenarios. And the temperature distributions of the fuel rod could be better simulated by the circumferentially-varied method for the small blockage scenario. Based on the validated code, the analysis of blockage characteristics was conducted. It could be seen from the temperature and flow distributions that a large blockage accident is more destructive compared with a small one. The sensitivity analysis shows that the closer the blockage location is to the exit, the more dangerous the accident is. Similarly, a larger blockage length will lead to a more serious case. And a higher exit temperature will be generated resulting from a higher peak coolant temperature of the blocked region. This work could provide a reference for the future design and development of the LFR.

Recovery of Co and Ni from Strong Acidic Solution by Cyanex 301 (강산성용액에서 Cyanex 301에 의한 Co 및 Ni 회수 연구)

  • An experiment was conducted to separate or recover Co and Ni using Cyanex 301 from process by-products and waste resources containing Co and Ni. To separate and recover Co and Ni from simulated leaching solutions, 10 v/v% Cyanex 301 was used as an extractant in this study; Li was not extracted. At equilibrium pH 1.5 and a phase ratio (A/O) of 1.0, 0.44% of Mg and 11.57% of Mn were extracted, and more than 99% of Co and Ni were extracted. McCabe-Thiele diagram analysis confirmed that more than 99.9% of Co and Ni could be extracted simultaneously through two-stage extraction with an extraction phase ratio (A/O) of 2. It was possible to extract Mg and Mn simultaneously through the scrubbing process. In the scrubbing process, more than 99% of Mg and 87% of Mn were scrubbed using 0.05 M of H2SO4, and 99.9% of Mg and more than 80% of Mn were scrubbed using 0.05 M of HCl. In the stripping process, 93% of Co and 5% of Ni were stripped selectively by 3.0 M of H2SO4. However, when 8.0 M of HCl was used as a stripping solution, more than 99.9% of Co and more than 90% of Ni were stripped simultaneously.

Changes of Current and Wave Patterns Depending on Typhoon Pathways in a Shallow Channel between Jeju and Udo Island (태풍 경로에 따른 제주 우도수로에서의 해류와 파랑 특성 변화)

  • A shallow channel between Jeju and Udo Islands, which is located in the northeastern Jeju Island, is influenced by storm- or typhoon-induced currents and surface waves as well as strong tidal currents. This study examines the typhoon-induced current and wave patterns in the channel, using Acoustic Doppler Current Meter (ADCP) measurements and an ocean-wave coupled modeling experiment. Three typhoons were chosen - Chaba (2016), Soulik (2018), and Lingling (2019) - to investigate the responses of currents and waves in their pathways. During the pre-typhoon periods, dominant northward flow and wave propagation were observed in the channel due to the southeasterly winds before the three typhoons. After the passage of Chaba, which passed over the eastern side of Jeju Island, the northward flow and wave propagation were totally reversed to the opposite direction, which was attributed to the strong northerly winds on the left side of the typhoon. In contrast, in the cases of Soulik and Lingling, which passed over the western side of Jeju Island, strong southerly winds on the right side of the typhoons continuously intensified the northward current and wave propagation in the channel. The model-simulated current and wave fields reasonably coincided with observational data, showing southward/northward flow and wave propagation in response to the right/left side of the typhoon pathways. Typhoon-induced downwind flows, and surface waves could enhance up to 2m/s and 3m due to the strong winds that lasted for more than 12 hours. This suggests that the flow and wave patterns in the Udo channel are highly sensitive to the pathway of typhoons and accompanying winds; thus, this may be a crucial factor with regard to the movement of seabed sediments and subsequent coastal erosion.
